General: To determine the physico-chemical and
biological indicators in aquatic organisms
(phytoplankton, zooplankton) that are essential for
input into the prediction model for fish kills in Taal
Lake based on primary, secondary and anecdotal
data. Specific: (1) determine the significant and
important changes in structure and function in
phytoplankton communities and their interactions
associated with the approach and the aftermath of a
fish kill; (2) determine the correlation between and
among the changes noted, and in relation with the
corresponding observations in the zooplankton and
cultured fish; (3) determine the data transformations
necessary for inputting the phytoplankton in the
overall model for prediction of fish kill integrate
primary, secondary and anecdotal sources of
limnological information regarding the physical,
chemical, biological dynamics relevant to the
occurrence of fish kills in Taal Lake; (4) determine

zooplankton communities in Taal Lake heralding the
approach, and marking the aftermath of a fish kill;

General: To determine the morpho-phyisiological and
behavioral indicators in tilapia of an imminent fish
kill, their relationship with management practices and
sediment characteristics and dynamics. Specific: (1)
document current aquaculture practices /
management strategies that impact on the spatiotemporal and intensity and duration of occurrence of
fish kills; (2) document the morpho-physiological and
behavioral characteristics of Nile tilapia in cages and
in the open waters during times of a lake overturn,
algal bloom and die-off; and after a volcanic unrest;
(3) evaluate the modifying effect of fish cage
aquaculture on the lake sediment characteristics; (4)
evaluate the production performance of Nile tilapia
reared in cages during times of a lake overturn, algal
bloom and die-off; and volcanic unrest with emphasis
on lake sediment dynamics; (5) transform the data
collected for input in the predictive model for a fish

fish yield through
genetic improvement is
a viable option if done
mainly through
conventional means
such as selective

Towards Enhanced Broodstock
Quality of the Sandfish, Holothuria

The improvement of
sandfish broodstock
quality for selected
performance traits can
further contribute to
enhanced sandfish
hatchery production.
Genomic methods, in
particular, are a useful
approach to move
sandfish culture forward
towards enhanced
production. Genomic
approaches can enable
the identification of
putative genes
controlling desired
broodstock
characteristics (growth,
body wall thickness) and
the development of
molecular markers
associated with these
traits. These are
fundamental steps
towards the
identification and
eventual selection of
broodstock for desired
performance traits such
as faster growth and
body wall thickness.
General: To employ genomic approaches towards
enhancing sandfish broodstock quality. Specific: (a)
To identify putative genes or gene regions associated
with performance traits related to growth and body
wall thickness; (b) To evaluate the utility of
molecular markers for performance traits; and (c) To
develop molecular assays for genotyping and
broodstock phenotypic selection

Mud crabs (Scylla spp.)

bottleneck in the
expansion of mud crab

However, adoption of
the hatchery technology
is slow due to high cost
of production (additional

Death Syndrome (MDS)
and suitable broodstock

challenges in mud crab
1. To identify commercially available shrimp
formulated diets for feeding the mud crab larvae. 2.
To reduce the use of antibiotics and/or find
alternative to antibiotics for mud crab seed
production. 3. To determine the volume of wild
caught seed stock that can still be obtained in major
collection sites and pond area used for crab farming.
4. To accelerate the dissemination of science-based
mud crab hatchery technology to industry
stakeholders.

Biogroe Technology (Year 1 of 2)
Biogroe is a solid-based
microbial plant-growth
promoter that contains
plant growth promoting
bacteria (PGPB) that is
effective in boosting the
growth of a number of
crops. The BioGroe
technology has great
potential to increase
yields with lower cost of
production. A reduction
in cost of production will
result in increased net
benefit per area planted
to the crop and give
higher income of
farmers. This technology
if commercialized is
expected to alleviate
poverty among small
farmers.
