The next day, a large snowdrift was left down the center of the street outside the Ladysmith Branch, which the city did not have time to remove before the branch’s drive-up opened. A Heritage member, on her way to the credit union to make a deposit, tried to fight the snowdrift – and lost. Her vehicle become stuck atop the snow, ... continue reading at MyHeritageStory.com. It’s a bird, it’s a plane… It’s the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, and it will be visiting Phillips, WI, on November 8! The Phillips Branch was the winner of our 80th Birthday Food Fight, a friendly competition that pitted our 12 branches against each other to collect the most food items for local food pantries. Annamarie Novak, Catawba, was chosen from the prize entries received during our 80th Birthday Party to enjoy a 2-hour ride, along with three guests, in the world-famous Wienermobile – a vehicle close to our heart, since we began as the financial partner for the employees of Oscar Mayer & Co. in 1934. Thank you to everyone who participated in our Food Fight. We collected nearly 600 food items companywide, to help feed hungry families in our communities. Cut Holiday Expenses (No Scrooge Required) There are plenty of ways to have fun, create lasting memories, and avoid the “Bah, humbug!” approach to the coming holiday season: • Draw names. Establish a new tradition of limiting the number of people for whom you purchase gifts, as well as the dollar amount spent on each gift. Chances are, other family members are in the same financial boat. But don’t wait until mid-December to bring up the subject – the earlier, the better, before anyone starts shopping. • Create coupons. If you ask Grandma whether she’d like another expensive sweater or a coupon from a grandchild to make cookies together, guess which one she’d likely choose! Handmade coupons for running errands, cooking a meal together, shoveling the sidewalk or planting flowers are welcome treats for elderly relatives. • Give homemade items. The time you spend making the item shows how much you really care about the receiver. If Grandpa has an old, unused pitchfork in the barn, use a staple gun to attach greenery, use a hot glue gun to attach pine cones and decorations, then wrap a string of holiday lights around it. He’ll make sure that decoration gets used every year! If you know how to knit, make some handmade potholders for the special cooks in your life. If your forte is baking, give holiday tins of homemade cookies to friends, the letter carrier, your hairdresser, and newspaper deliverer. • Use natural decorations. Gather leaves, pinecones, low-hanging branches from pine trees, or other items from nature and use them in centerpieces and mantel decorations. Tip: Place pinecones in a single layer on a cookie sheet and bake them for 15 to 20 minutes at 200 degrees to rid them of bugs or spiders. • Wrap it creatively. Purchase a roll of inexpensive meatpacking paper from the local butcher and have young children draw and color on the paper, which can be cut to fit any size package. Or, make your own gift wrap – there are countless resources and ideas on the internet to get you started. • Make it memorable. Rather than trying to make and pay for an entire meal and feed the whole family, organize a potluck that allows everyone to contribute and show off their culinary talents. Ask guests to string popcorn and cranberry chains as decoration for the holiday tree. Bring out photos of past holiday gatherings – that’s sure to generate a lot of stories and laughter. Finally, ask everyone to share their favorite holiday memories. Chances are, the majority of responses will be ones that don’t involve spending any money at all. And that’s truly what the holidays are meant to be – engaging in special traditions and creating lasting memories. No Scrooge required. The Best Time to Buy a New Car To put yourself in the best negotiating position, the time of month or year when you shop for a new car really does matter. Dealerships and individual salespeople have monthly quotas to meet. So in the last few days of a month, they’re especially eager to make deals. In late summer and early fall as the next year’s models are about to go on sale, buying a leftover vehicle from the current model year can mean huge savings. Shopping for cars, not gifts, right before Christmas – when auto showroom traffic is light – also can produce a good deal. It can get lonely on the sales floor of a car dealer in late December when almost everyone is at the mall rushing to finish holiday shopping. So if you show up at the dealership with a well-prepared plan, you may get a great deal for Christmas. Hit the dealership any time demand is low, when few people are out and about (for example, on a rainy or snowy day) and the dealer is most eager to negotiate, and you’ll be more likely to save compared to the shopper who negotiates when the dealer is busy closing sales. Consider shopping after very bad weather, for instance when the roads clear just after a snowstorm. And don’t forget a cardinal rule of car buying: plan ahead for your financing. He is a retired anesthesiologist who is passionate about fishing. He has spent countless hours enjoying the sport in the Midwest and Ontario, and his love of the water is reflected by elements of water in his landscape paintings. Terry, a self-taught artist, has been painting for more than fifteen years. His current works are created in acrylics and showcase his newfound interest of depicting birds on canvas.
