us in 2015, as a result of the 2014 off year
elections? If you answer yes than this course
is for you. We will meet to review and select
the most pressing issues of the day and how
they will impact the upcoming elections as
well as
the presidential elections in
2016. Once we decide on the major issues
we will split up into groups to research them
and report back to the group in the following
session. We will also take a secret straw poll
to determine who and what issues will prevail,
with results published after the elections. So if
you enjoy a good political discussion, make
sure you attend.

for topics. Once we have a complete list we
will vote on all topics with the one garnering

Al Jolson Sings Again

This lecture will cover the Career of Al Jolson
who was the Worlds Greatest Entertainer for
the first half of the 20th century. Jolson was
known as the King of the Minstrels before
being the star in the first talking picture "The
Jazz Singer." Jolson appeared on Broadway
many times and also in the Winter Garden. He
was the first to entertain the troops overseas.
And he made the biggest comeback in the
history of movies and music as shown in the
two movies that depicted his life (Jolson was
played by Larry Parks) "The Jolson Story"
which was followed by "Jolson Sings Again".
Some rare footage of Jolson from the early
days to the end of his life will be shown in
class.

Surprisingly, The National Gallery of Art in
Washington, D.C. was neither conceived by
politicians nor have the works of art in the
museum been bought by the government.
During the 1920s, Andrew Mellon began
collecting with the intention of forming a
gallery of art for the nation in Washington,
D.C. The talk will cover a brief history of the
museum, some of the works of art given to the
National Gallery by major collectors, a look at
the permanent installations and collections of
the museum. You will hear how the National
Gallery got the only Leonardo da Vinci
painting in the United States. The Gallery has
a wide and extensive range of paintings,
prints, photographs and sculpture, both
historic and modern, including paintings by
Vermeer and Rembrandt and over 300 prints
by Rembrandt.

The Central Arizona Project Where Does Our Water Come
From?

The Central Arizona Project is designed to
bring about 1.5 million acre-feet of Colorado
River water per year to Pima, Pinal and
Maricopa counties. CAP carries water from
Lake Havasu near Parker to the southern
boundary of the San Xavier Indian
Reservation southwest of Tucson. It is a 336mile long system of aqueducts, tunnels,
pumping plants and pipelines and is the
largest single resource of renewable water
supplies in the state of Arizona.
Palo Verde Power Plant
The Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station,
located 55 miles west of downtown Phoenix,
is the largest nuclear power plant in the United States and generates more electricity each
year than any other plant of any kind. Includes a field trip to the Energy Education Center. See p. 21 for details.

This is a practical course oriented toward travelers and newcomers to the Grand Canyon
State. It's perfect for those who have an interest in traveling in the desert and alpine environments. This class will keep you out of trouble in most weather and travel situations in
Arizona. Suggestions are offered on how to
prepare for and avoid problems when traveling on or off the road, and how to prepare a
disaster/survival pack for your vehicle and
home in Arizona.

In general, very little is known about
Manchuria today other than the fact that it is
very cold in the winter and somewhat
isolated. Manchuria used to be a thriving
region with a very modern (for the times) city
of Harbin which was a Russian city, but then
came under Japanese rule before falling to
the Soviets briefly, and is now under the
Peoples Republic of China. Manchuria, often
considered to be part of China today, is a
very different and separate region with
ethnically/racially different people inhabiting

Iceland and Greenland lie in the North Atlantic
- two countries, close geographically but very
different. Iceland sits half on the European
and half on the North American tectonic
plates. It is a country of immense scenic
beauty and a thriving European culture.
Greenland, its neighbor to the west, is a very
different place - larger, colder and populated
primarily by Inuit people. While it is currently
a "backwater", Greenland is poised for big
changes as one of the next great mining
frontiers as global warming starts to uncover
precious metals from the frozen surroundings.
We'll start with a lively discussion of the
people, geography, history, government,
economy, current events, etc and will end with
a 30 minute slide show. This lecture series is
appropriate for those who have been there or
those who just want to learn more about our
fascinating world.

Grand Computers Club will offer nearly 100 PC, Mac, and Other classes (i.e. tablets, smart
phones, etc.) in its fall schedule starting October 13, 2014. The schedule will be viewable online
on September 22. Registration for classes will be available online for Grand Computers Club
members on October 6. All courses are described at www.grandcomputers.org. To register for
classes online, go to the Education page of the website and click “Register Online.” The “Course
Listing” lists only names of courses being offered, but clicking any course takes you to its description, prerequisites and objectives. “Class Schedule” lists all classes alphabetically under PC, Mac and Other categories with dates, times, instructors and number of seats available.
You must be a Grand Computers Club member to register for classes. You may become a new member or renew your
current membership online at www.grandcomputers.org (New members, click “Membership Application” on the
homepage), or at the Grand Computers Club open use room at the Chaparral Center. Membership runs from October
1-September 30.
Another interesting aspect of the Grand Computers Club is the variety of Special Interest Groups (SIGs) offered. All
members of the club are invited to any and all of the nine SIGs:

From October–May, on the first Wednesday at the Cimarron Center at 1:00 PM, there is a General Meeting where
speakers discuss timely technology topics. This is open to all Grand residents. Door prizes are given.
From October–April, on the second Thursday in the Hopi Room, Chaparral Center, from 8:30 -10:00 AM, the Club presents a Coffee Chat that is open to all Grand residents. The topics vary but are always interesting and always related
to technology. Coffee & donuts are served.
The Grand Computers Club has an open use room with computers, a 35mm slide scanner; a VHS to DVD converter; a
vinyl record to CD converter; scanners for photos and documents; image to text converter; PDF to text converter;
word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, genealogy, and flight simulator software available for your use.
Our club experts are available at Tech Help to help members with technical issues; this gratis service for club members can be software or hardware related. PC Tech Help is available each Tuesday from 1:30-3:30. iPad/iPhone Tech
is available each Monday from 1:30-3:30. Mac Tech Help is available on the 2nd Tuesday and 4th Wednesday from
3:00–4:00 PM (October – May). All Tech Help sessions are conducted in the Grand Computers Club open use room.

The Federalist Papers are a series of 85

These are the words of R.R. Palmer and Joel
Colton, in their masterful work, "A History of
the Modern World," as they describe the
French Revolution as the "most momentous
upheaval of the whole revolutionary age". In
1799, France fell into the hands of Napoleon
Bonaparte. His impact would contribute to the
spread of the ideals, philosophy, and vision of
the Revolution throughout Europe and the
world. At the end of his reign, in 1815, once
again both Europe and the world would
forever be changed as the modern era of
Western Civilization begins. In this course,
we will survey the events of Napoleon's time
from his early days on Corsica, his
emergence as a military genius, the formation
of the French Imperial System, the Grand
Empire and the Continental System, the
resulting nationalistic movements, throughout
Europe, to his "Waterloo" and final days on St.
Helena.

Louisiana Purchase, nearly doubling the size of
the country. We'll follow a band of 30 men and
a young Indian woman with a newborn baby as
they faced hunger, cold, illness, hostile Indians
and came close to death in their search for a
water route to the Pacific Ocean. Given up for
dead, they returned to a hero's welcome two
and a half years and 8000 miles later. We'll go
on to look at what the future held for key
expedition members, along with the near loss of
the Louisiana Territory a few years later.

on a short course of how forensic scientists gather
evidence from a crime scene, finger print analysis,
blood stains, tire marks and ballistics to establish
guilt and innocence. The DVD-based course will
begin with a series of basic lectures on "What is
Forensic Science", "How to investigate a crime
scene", "Use of Finger Prints" and other physical
evidences and then the class will chose from
many different subjects

identification, Poisons, Fire Science, Blood Stains
and Forensic Profiling. No trench coats,
magnifying glass or deer-stalker hat required. This
course will be filled with information that anyone
who likes detective fiction would kill for. No class

Palo Verde Power Plant

The Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station,
located 55 miles west of downtown Phoenix,
is the largest nuclear power plant in the United States and has consistently generated
more electricity each year than any other plant
of any kind. Its three units are capable of
generating more than 4,000 megawatts of
electricity. Because of its desert location, Palo Verde has no large body of water to meet
its cooling needs. Instead, it uses treated effluent from several area municipalities to meet
its cooling water needs, recycling approximately 20 billion gallons of wastewater a
year. The field trip is to the Energy Education
Center on Airport Road. Directions and car-pool
info will be discussed at the first class meeting.

watchers. This class includes three classroom
sessions and three weekend field trips.
Classroom format will consist of short
PowerPoint presentations, discussions, group
activities and question and answer sessions.
Field trips will be on the Saturday following
the first class and will vary in length and
location. The purpose of the field trips is to
introduce students to a variety of resident and
migrant bird species, explore a diversity of
birding habitats, teach field identification
techniques and highlight some of the Valley's
local birding destinations. You will leave this
class with an enhanced knowledge of birding
and the resources to continue developing your
knowledge and skills. Field trips will be on the
mornings of December 6, 13 and 20. Limit 20.

This lecture, by the author of “The Manchurian
Tales,” starts with a brief history of Manchuria.
Later, the discussion will center on the socalled uhl mao zeh, the Russian Koreans that
ended up in Manchuria. There is a very large
population of Russian Koreans in Russia and
other regions of the former Soviet Union.
In general, very little is known about
Manchuria today other than the fact that it is
very cold in the winter and somewhat isolated.
But, the harsh winters aside, Manchuria used
to be a thriving region with a very modern (for
the times) city of Harbin. Harbin was a
Russian city, but then came under Japanese
rule before falling to the Soviets briefly, and is
now under the Peoples Republic of China.
Manchuria, although considered to be part of
China today, is a very different and separate
region with ethnically/racially different people
inhabiting the region.

Jerry Belcher: Safe Solar Viewing (p. 20); Jerry is the past president of the Phoenix Astronomy Society. He studied Astronomy at Phoenix College and has a pilots license and participated in activities such as stock car driving, over 500 skydiving jumps, and diving with sharks in the Pacific Ocean.

Chuck Emmett: Palo Verde Power Plant (p. 21) ; Chuck worked for APS at Palo
Verde for 30 years and now works as a tour and presentation consultant. A Navy veteran of the Submarine Service, he now enjoys the blue skies and sunshine in Glendale with his wife.

Roland Garcia: World War I, And So It Begins (p. 18); Roland Garcia has had a deep
life long interest in history. He is an active participant in several Grand Learning classes. Mr. Garcia is
retired from New York State government where he served as an administrator in the social services department.


Ann Goldfarb: Writing a Short Story (p. 23); New York native Ann Goldfarb spent over
30 years as a teacher, professional staff developer and school principal. She enjoys opening the world
of historical fiction via mystery, suspense and time travel. When she is not conducting workshops or
writing, she is either swimming, hiking or frequenting one of the many coffee shops in the West Valley of
Phoenix.

Nick Hahn: Meet the Author, “The Manchurian Tales” (p. 23); Nick served with the
US Army Special Forces, taught literature at Chico State University in California, and worked as a Foreign Service Officer. He first published during his college days and has since authored four books,
close to one hundred essays, and articles on various subjects. The Manchurian Tales is his fourth
book. Nick has taught classes at the local community college and given numerous lectures on a variety
of subjects. He resides in Litchfield Park and is currently involved in several writing projects.
Rabbi David Rosenberg: The Dead Sea Scrolls, and Judiasm: What’s Makes It
Tick? (p. 20); Rabbi Rosenberg is the Rabbi for the Beth Emeth Congregation in Sun City West.

Helen Swan: Memoir Writing: Telling Your Story (p. 23); As a past author, I have specialized in non-fiction. My first book was published in 1984. Other publications included research articles about child sexual abuse and a professional manual for adoptive parents of children sexually
abused. My latest endeavor is writing my own autobiography. Immediately after graduating from Purdue University, I taught junior high and high school student for two years. After receiving my Masters in
Social Work in 1975, I continued to teach education courses for adults and child abuse courses for
teachers and professionals at Ottawa University and Washington University in St. Louis.



Brenda Williams: History of Afternoon Tea (p. 18); Brenda was born and raised in
Warwickshire, England. She moved to Canada in 1966, and then to Lakewood, CO in 1980. Three
years later she opened a Tea Room in Lakewood. Brenda began making her own scone mix, preserves,
lemon curd and stuffing mixes. Brenda has been in the Sun Cities area since 1999 and still offers delicious tea, pastries, preserves, gourmet chocolates and gifts to the public at affordable prices.
