Gävle Municipality
The Gävle region has the highest concentration of GIS expertise in Europe,
and the University of Gävle has also established a logistics innovation and
research center. A Transport Science Centre has been planned, and will be
a national arena for transportation and logistics research.
Community characteristics
Gävle is one of the oldest and leading commercial and maritime cities in Sweden.
The city enjoys a central location in the Nordic region, on the east coast of Sweden,
and is just 80 minutes from Stockholm. The busiest container port on the east coast
is also located here, securing the supply chain for the Stockholm-Mälardal region.

The region also hosts world-class export companies, primarily in forest products
and steel, including Sandvik AB, Stora Enso AB, Ovako AB and BillerudKorsnäs
AB. Gävle is Europe’s GIS capital and seat of one of the Swedish Transport Administration’s four traffic control centres in Sweden. Gävle is part of the Logistic Hub of
Central Sweden, which was initiated by seven municipalities in this region.
The amount of detailed-planned land available for logistics operations is approximately 60 hectares (600,000 square metres), with close proximity to European
highways, the railway and the Port.
To keep pace with Gävle’s rapid rate of growth, development of the Gävle Norr
Tolvfors Logistics and Industrial Park has now commenced, just ten minutes from
the Port of Gävle, with connections to the E4 and E16 highways, and the Bergslagsbanan, Ostkustbanan and Norra Stambanan Main Lines. The vision is to be the
most innovative logistics park in the Nordic region, in which GIS technology will
play a major role. Planning is also underway for a logistics park of 30 hectares
(300,000 square meters) at Ersbo Syd along the E4 highway, and the Fredrikskan
Logistics Park of 10 hectares (100,000 square meters) by the Port of Gävle.
Transport access and characteristics
Gävle is situated at the junction of the E4 highway (from Helsingborg in southern
Sweden to Torneå in Finland) and the E16 highway (from Gävle in Sweden to
Bergen, via Oslo, in Norway). Gävle is connected to three Swedish railway lines:
Ostkustbanan (Eastern Main Line), Bergslagsbanan (Bergslagen Line) and Norra
Stambanan (Northern Main Line).

The closest commercial airport is Stockholm Arlanda Airport (60 minutes away).
Gävle also has an airport, Gestrike Airport, some 20 minutes from the city, which
is mainly used for business, transport and air ambulance services.
Two train services per day (38 carriages) operate the Stockholm Arlanda line,
powered with jet fuel from the Port of Gävle. When Arlanda Flygbränslehantering
AB took over the transportation of jet fuel from the Port of Gävle to Stockholm
Arlanda Airport, the number of tanker trucks on the streets of Stockholm decreased
by more than 55 per day.
Gävle Container Terminal AB is the fastest growing container terminal on
the east coast of Sweden, serving routes to Rotterdam, Bremerhaven, Rauma and
St Petersburg. One of the biggest petroleum ports in Sweden is also located close to
the Port of Gävle. The LNG Terminal is currently in the design stage.
In addition to the Port of Gävle, which can receive Panamax vessels, there are also
two industrial ports in the Gävle region – Norrsundet and Skutskär.
Municipal support and experience
Investments of some EUR 1, 2 billion have been planned for the Gävle region
during the period until 2020 such as;
– The Port of Gävle (expanding the quays)
– Gävle Syd Ersbo Logistics Park (expanding)
– Gävle Norr Tolvfors Logistics Park (500 hectares to be planned)
– Double track on the Eastern Main Line between Gävle and Stockholm
Educational programmes in logistics
The University of Gävle has some 15,000 students. Programmes include Industrial
Economics and Engineering Economics. The University also offers a Master Programme in Logistics and Innovation Management (Sweden-China Master) and a
Master Programme in Management of Logistics and Innovation.
Research and Development in logistics
The University is also home to the Centre for Logistics and Innovative Production
(CLIP). Fields of research at CLIP include Supply Chain Management, outsourcing/insourcing, innovation processes, Lean Production, distribution and transport
logistics, and logistics and energy/environment.
A Transport Science Centre (TSC) is also being planned for Gävle. This will be a
national arena for research in transport and logistics, with themes including city
logistics, combined and sea transport.
More than 200 companies and organisations are currently collaborating in a cluster
known as Future Position X. The Gävle region has the highest concentration of GIS
expertise in Europe and is referred to as Europe’s GIS capital. The introduction of
GIS technology is generating major savings for both the environment and transportation costs.
The Gävle region is first in Sweden to test electric roads with airborne power
supplies for trucks. In a joint venture between Swedish Biogas International AB and
Gävle Energi, in partnership with Biogas My, SBI Ekogas AB has been providing
greener vehicles in Gävleborg County since October 2010.
