holidays handy

The holidays are upon us, but no need to
panic! You don’t have to brave the gauntlet
of holiday shopping at the mall this year. The
June M. Hughes Arts & Crafts Center is
your place for one-stop holiday shopping for
everyone on your Christmas list.
The center has several holiday-themed classes
planned in November and December for
creative members of Team Redstone.
“We are offering card-making classes where
instructor Joy Hall will teach students how
to paint cards,” said Arts and Crafts Center’s
Nancy Green.
In addition to holiday card making, the
center is also offering woodworking classes in
November and December. Instructor Charlie
Mullins will teach woodworkers how to build
a Shaker quilt rack and side table.
Wine enthusiasts can join the center’s popular Brushstrokes Uncorked class, which will
be painting holiday-themed wine glasses for
their December class.
Accomplished painter Tatiana Hankinson
will also be teaching a holiday-themed weekly watercolor class in December. Hankinson,
splits her time between the center and the
Redstone Arsenal Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation
Child, Youth and School Services’ SkiesUnlimited program, where she teaches art classes
to the youngest members of Team Redstone.
“We are really excited to partner with them,”
said Green. “We have had ten-year-olds sign
up for our beginning drawing classes. Tatiana
also teaches the beginning classes for adults,
which is really cool.”
For those who are not necessarily the crafty
type, the center has a multitude of readymade gifts, which can be purchased as is, or
personalized for a small additional fee. One
popular gift is their personalized photo ornaments. Graphic artist Chandler Reed will

take a photo of your choosing and create a
personalized ornament, which makes a great
gift for coaches, teachers and grandparents.
Hand-turned pens are another popular gift
that can be engraved. Needing a gift for the
football fan in your life? The center’s custom
framing is a popular choice and can be personalized to fit your sports team of choice.

sandwich) is what people are crazy about.”
When Scariano came to Redstone, he saw
the potential in the Java Café as not just
another coffee shop. It’s hard work and not
a 9-5 job, but his vision has come to fruition
with business doubling in their new home.
And he’s not done yet.
“We didn’t want to be Starbucks,” he said.
“When we started off in the old place, we
were a coffee shop that served sandwiches.
We were going to offer something nicer. It
was a matter of growing the client base. You
can’t appeal to everyone but the people you
do appeal to will be loyal to you.”
www.redstonemwr.com
The lunchtime line of hungry employees that
snakes through the Welcome Center can
attest to that. In addition to their popular
pulled pork and brisket sandwiches, the café
also offers a popular chicken salad on different bread choices.
With the holiday season here, the Java has
brought back its yuletide menu, including the
classic peppermint mocha and other seasonal
favorites. If coffee is not your thing, still stop
by for a famous, fresh-baked cookie. If you
don’t have time to sit and relax on one of
the café’s plush, leather couches, no worries.
Everything on the Java’s menu is available for
carryout. Scariano welcomes everyone to visit
the “coolest place on the Arsenal.”
“Great food, great coffee, great music. Come
on down.”
