From the Principal
Kia Ora Koutou
This week our Year 7s are on camp in the Nelson Lakes and this Monday
we welcomed back a very tired but satisfied group of Year 8s who spent
last week on camp at the same venue. It has been great hearing about
some of the challenges the Year 8s overcame, particularly ones which
seemed too difficult at first. Learning to persist and persevere when
things initially seem challenging or you fail in your first attempts is a vital
part of every child’s education. A huge thank you to the staff and parents
who went on camp with our Year 8s, this is a huge commitment and it is
much appreciated.

I follow a number of education related blogs. One I read recently
resonated with me as a principal, teacher, colleague and parent. It relates
to the celebration of achievement and effort. I found it extremely
thought provoking, please follow the link below if you are interested:

Kiss & Drop Roster Coordinator Needed
Kiss and Drop is a fantastic, parent-led, travel safety initiative we have at
KNS. Unfortunately Nicola Stitt our current coordinator is unable to
continue in this role. My thanks on behalf of the whole school community
for the great work Nicola has done coordinating this group. If you think
that you could help with this role please read on.
Can you spare 15 minutes once a week and 2-3 hours once a term? And
it’s all done by email in the comfort of your own home!
Kiss & Drop is the parent run valet service which improves the safety and
efficiency of school drop offs on Donald Street in the mornings. The Kiss &
Drop coordinator puts together the roster from our great bunch of parent
volunteers.
If this sounds like you, please contact Nicola Stitt on [email protected] or Kay Webster on [email protected].
Thanks for supporting the school travel programme.
Te Reo
Each week our Maori Curriculum Leaders David Wong and Mayana Karena suggest a phrase or two for teachers to introduce
and use with their classes. This week the phrases are:


Excuse me/sorry - Arohaina mai
Get well soon - Kia piki te ora
Traffic Safety - Parking Reminder
A very small number of parents/caregivers continue to park illegally, when dropping children off in the morning and
collecting them after school. I am very conscious of the need to maintain a positive relationship with our neighbours. KNS
parents/caregivers parking across driveways and leaving their cars to collect children is understandably annoying for the
residents in Donald St and Cooper St. I ask that you find a more suitable place to park if you are intending to leave your car.
Office Hours from 24/10/14 to 14/11/14 – Reminder
A reminder that the office will close at 3.30pm each school-day from Friday 24 October through until Friday 14 November.
The reason for this is that two of our office team will be on leave for that that period.
Property
Those of you who have been in school this week may have noticed a drilling crew working on the old-prefab site. They are
drilling for rock samples to assist with the engineering work required prior to the replacement of the prefabs with three new
classrooms.
A thought to share with your children: “Success is dependent on effort.” (Sophocles)

Many thanks for your Yummy Fruit labels - we earned $684 to spend on sports
equipment
Many thanks for collecting all those stickers and labels. We have ordered a collection of new soccer, netball and basketballs
worth almost $700.
We will do the Yummy Fruit collection next year, so keep collecting stickers and labels from Apples and Nectarines when you
see them during the year. It is well worth doing - this year we collected just short of 60 sheets so each sheet is worth over
$10 of sports equipment. Particular thanks to Harvey Spicer's family, the Cubis family and several unnamed others who
packaged up multiple sheets each.
