Fair Play Project 20 Years 2014
Anna Dmitrieva, Lyudmila Katrovskaya and Tatyana Sedova speak about the creation and development of the project ”Fair play”, which solves many difficulties in the lives of families with children
with special needs.
It all started almost accidentally. Elena Kozhevnikova, being in Stockholm, glanced into a shop
called Kalikå and paid attention to the displayed toys. They were unusually bright and warm at
the same time, begging one to pick them up. They stood in stark contrast to the serial uniformity
of plastic production that Russian children and parents were used to. This gave birth to an idea,
which Elena discussed with the chief executive of the firm Kalikå: Lisa Laster. After reaching a
mutual agreement, they decided to create an enterprise making stuffed toys in Russia.
It was a difficult time, mid-90s, when the transition hit Russian society and plunged it into a deep
crisis. The increasing social instability caused concern even outside the borders. But this cooperative project was different from most others, and was therefore named “Fair Play”. It was initially
oriented towards supporting those living outside of social protection and families raising children
with disabilities, but not in the typical form of charity.
Instead, the project created possibilities to join a fun, but also serious, game and gain independence. Lisa came to Russia, met with those who accepted the offer and showed which toys she
would like to sew. And in spring 1994 the “play” began, with support from SIDA. To begin with, the
project had only four participants, which met up at each other’s houses. But shortly the constellation started to increase, and they would sit in the rooms at the Institute, and – of course – take the
work home.
– Before, I was leading an arts society for parents with disabled children, says Lyudmila Kartovskaya, – and the mothers of these children took part in this project. In the 90s, no one would take
on someone who worked part-time. But a disabled child takes care, and attention. Many of the
husbands were out of work as well, and some did not even have husbands. They were doomed to
begging.
– I was feeling that it wasn’t long until my problems would swallow me whole, remembers Anna. –
Help came when it was least expected, from Sweden, it was literally a lifebuoy. We were all really
happy, because it was a real income, and there was a big plus in that the work could be done at
home: the child could sit next to me, under my surveillance, and I could plan my own hours.
– Participating in the project “Fair Play” is not only a comfortable job and a good cause. It’s also
a possibility to not go and ask for help, Tanya adds, – as well as self-realize creatively speaking.
Many who sew visualize what the kids are going to do with the toys. Each of the toys is handmade and has an individual creative touch of its maker. It’s a happiness that we can give to children and their parents.
The purpose of the toy is to stimulate the child’s fantasy and develop its independence. For this
reason, the toy designs are adapted to the children’s needs, to stimulate: clear, bright colours,
highly contrasting details – such objects are easier to concentrate on. They are all made out of
very soft cotton, which is nice to the touch, and some of them make sounds, which help the development of movement and sensory coordination. Finger toys give brilliant possibilities to interact with the child, and if they are older, one can come up with a show. This type of play connects
parents and children.
During its course, the project has increased in size, sometimes reaching almost 50 participants,
and sometimes it has shrunk to twenty. Some come, and some go, though the core has always
been the same.
– We sew toys, but all of us have different professions. I, for example, am a stucco painter, continues Anna, – but there are also former teachers, health workers, engineers, bank workers, those
who, because of life circumstances, have had to interrupt their work.
The toys have been sold not only in Sweden, but also in Norway, Germany, France, England, USA
and Japan. Those who seemingly were in a hopeless situation were able to create toys that attracted children and adults all over the world. It feels so good for these women to know that they
can give happiness, and not only ask for help. Some achievements that are worth mentioning are
both the increase in production (from 300 to more than 40 000 toys a year) and quality, and the
longevity of the project: 20 years. Our purpose – to help families with disabled children to support
themselves – has not changed. Our newest project is the “fur project”. We started to make toys
out of real fur, to light up at the sight of these soft animals. The most important thing is to be warm
at heart and to care for each other us occupied between the Kalika orders. It is hard not to smile
when you see how the children light up at the sight of these soft animals. The most important thing
