When winter hits,
we’re ready.
You can count on city employees
to keep our neighbourhoods safe
and clear — in any weather.
Big storms often don’t give you much
warning. A city like Calgary needs a
team in place that can hit the streets
with a few hours notice.
Fortunately, that’s just what we have.
When the snow flew early this year,
Calgary’s city employees were prepared:
plowing streets and sidewalks, clearing
downed branches, trees and other debris,
salting and sanding.
We’re your reliable, dedicated team.
So when some politicians talk about
replacing experienced public employees
with for-profit contractors, know that it
comes at a price.
When your family’s safety is on the line,
cutting corners isn’t worth it.

How will you
remember?
Our Veterans are ordinary men
and women who did extraordinary things to protect our freedom and build a safer world to
live in. There are many ways you
can show that you remember and
honour our Canadian Veterans:
• Pin a poppy above your heart.
• Attend a local Remembrance Day ceremony.
• Visit a friend or relative who just returned home from
Afghanistan or who served elsewhere in the world.
• Listen to Veterans talk about their experiences.
• Visit the Veterans’ Week fan page (Opens a new window) on Facebook, write on our wall and share how
you remember.
• Change your FaceBook profile picture with a poppy,
write on your wall about how you remember, or create
your own remembrance fan page.
• Write about remembrance on your blog.
A great haircut will never
go out of style.

PRESIDENT’S
REPORT
As we go to press with the November issue, we can still
see the devastated trees in our neighborhood. Thanks
to the community residents and the city employees
who continue to work hard to clean up the mess. We’ve
heard stories of folks stepping up to help each other
in cleaning up yards, streets, etc. We have a thread of
“community hero” types in Braeside and we are so very
grateful that you are engaged in making community a
viable neighborhood where we look out for each other.
As we get close to 2015, watch for information on our
first ever “Community Open House” to be held in the
first part of next year. We’d like to present a showcase of
what the Community Association strives to provide in
the area of family events and what our building has to
offer. Additionally, we hope to involve representatives
from various neighborhood services to participate in
this event. We will keep you up to date on this evolving
event. Feel free to let us know if there is any particular
area you would like information. Ie. Community crime
stats, community/family assistance programs, what after school programming may be available, etc.
We will be holding our first Halloween Spooktacular at
the end of October and I’m hoping it will be well attended. Will let you know next issue. So, with Halloween behind us, its now about 60 days to Christmas, give
or take! Not that you really wanted to know that. LOL.
Centre Happenings!
Our next Community Event will be our Annual General
Meeting which will be held in January 2015. Details will
be in our December bulletin. Attending this meeting is
really important as we must have a quorum of community members in attendance to do any business. Please
consider attending our AGM to keep your Community
Association moving forward.
As reported previously we’ve got a presence on Facebook! Once you are in Facebook, search “Braeside Community Association”. We will work to expand our online
presence and if you’ve got some suggestions OR if you
are technically inclined and would like to manage this
page, we’d love to hear from you!

achieving my journeyman license at the Concept College of Cosmetology in Urbana, Illinois, I established Hair Soul in order to share my passion for

very hard to find a venue for expressing myself while
building community in my neighbourhood, and Hair

inspiration in our community and we place strong
emphasis on creating long lasting relationships with
our clients. Since we’ve been around for over 10 years,
we’ve worked hard to forge friendships and strong
customer service to establish a positive reputation

foster community. Hair Soul is a full service salon offering hair styling, haircuts, highlights and hair colour,

The extensive support
from the community I’ve been serving for the past 14
years inspired me to create the Hi Contour Airbrush
Makeup Company in January 2014, where I provide
education in the use of airbrush makeup. Hi Contour
specializes in teaching our students the application
of makeup by use of an airbrush system. Utilizing the
airbrush is a new and versatile method of applying
makeup, combining ease with the creative freedom
of traditional makeup. Our curriculum is based around
studies such as facial definition, colour theory, bridal
and photo shoot makeup, basic application of airbrush makeup as well as advanced application of airbrush makeup. We offer a one day class for beginners
and a five day course for those wanting to pursue their
knowledge of the intricate art of airbrush makeup.

help individuals who want to make a positive impact
on the community we love is all I need to keep moving

Concerns
A Call to Action
The Weaselhead/Glenmore Park Preservation Society and Calgary River Valleys hosted a Public Open Forum on October 7,
2014. The goal of this forum was to educate the public about
the current SW Ring Road design for crossing the Elbow River
Valley –South Calgary`s drinking water source. It was apparent
that many citizens are equally as concerned as we are, with
standing room only; the Cedarbrae Community Centre had
400 plus people packed in the gym, all eager to learn and express their concerns. Next step is a call to action. Technology
is available to construct the best road possible with enhanced
environmental mitigation that will respect the integrity of the
Elbow River Valley. The Weaselhead Preservation Society urges
citizens to ask the province for a design that will reduce the
impacts on this valued area.
Our high level concerns with the cut-and-fill design include the
settling of the berm over the long term; the realigning and restricting of the meandering Elbow River; the long term effects
on water quality, parks, community and wildlife.
The South West Connecting Calgary Ring Road Geotechnical
Assessment (Thurber, 2006) confirms that there are almost 20
meters of alluvial and lacustrine deposits on the Elbow River
valley bottom. The sand and gravel at the surface may be compactable in the short term, but the lacustrine deposits at depth
are notorious for settling over the long term. While a cut-andfill design may be the least expensive to construct, we submit
that it will be extremely expensive and disruptive to maintain
in the medium and long term as the substrate continues to
settle.
The dynamics of the meandering Elbow River, its alluvial aquifer and the entire hydraulic ecosystem should be much better
understood by the engineers developing the causeway. Current plans will alter the ecosystems, biodiversity, water quality,
fish habitat and more, while reducing forest rejuvenation and
increasing risk of forest fires over the long-term.
Realigning and restricting the river will result in sediment loading. Air-born salt and other by-products will impact the drinking water in the Glenmore Reservoir. The wetlands contribute

Are You Implementing
Strategies to Minimize Tax?
Ask an Expert
Q
Are there certain assets that I should give special
consideration to in order to avoid paying undue
tax?
A
Each year, countless individuals pay an excessive
amount of tax to Canada Revenue Agency. In
order to preserve the value of your assets, it is vital to
structure your estate in a strategic manner. Although tax
is an unavoidable reality within even a well-composed
estate, there are many tools available that may
significantly reduce or defer an estate’s taxation
liability. A proper tax plan should account for both
domestic and international issues. Many families are
unaware that internationally held assets, such as U.S.
vacation properties or U.S. investments, are liable
to both Canadian and U.S. estate taxes. Failure to
structure these assets within a larger tax scheme will
inevitably cause their real values to be reduced. In addition
to the aforementioned risks, foreign assets can also legally
create multiple estates. By owning U.S. property or
U.S. investments, you are recognized to possess both a

and Host of The Strongroom on QR77
Canadian and U.S. estate. Upon an individual’s
passing, these two estates will need to be settled, adding
considerably to the amount of time and money required.
Ultimately, your assets both inside and outside of Canada
require careful planning. In order to reduce tax, it is vital
to use the most qualified experts available. Always consult
with a professional to ensure you are properly protected.

COUNCILLOR’S REPORT
BRIAN PINCOTT
WARD 11
www.ward11calgary.ca
On November 4, the next four-year strategic plan and
budget will be released for public review. As part of
The City’s regular cycle of municipal elections and business planning, Action Plan is how we connect our City’s
day-to-day operations with its long-term goals, as well
as balance providing great services with affordable tax
rates for all Calgarians.
The Action Plan process launched last March with a
broad-reaching citizen engagement campaign. Informed
by engagement results, as well as other inputs like major economic and demographic trends, city finances and
legislative obligations, council drafted and approved its
priorities for 2015 - 2018 in May.
Over the summer, city staff created plans and budgets
in response to Council’s Priorities within spending limits
identified by council. The result, Action Plan 2015 - 2018,
identifies how The City will deliver 44 of council’s strategic actions over four years, representing over $20 billion
of capital infrastructure investment and service delivery.
This includes the nearly 100 different kinds of front-line
services already provided that support citizens in their
daily lives.
Visit calgary.ca/actionplan to see the full plan on November 4, as well as city performance measures, benchmarking, citizen engagement, budgets and detailed
Council Priorities. After Action Plan is released, council
will consider the plan for approval during two weeks of
deliberations from November 24 to December 5, 2014.
From November 4 onward, you can comment on the
proposed plan on calgary.ca, by filling out a comment
card at your local public library, or by contacting 311. As
well, you are invited to sign-up before November 19 to
speak during council deliberations or submit a presentation in advance for consideration by November 13. All
feedback will be shared with council.
As always, I encourage constituents of Ward 11 to contact me with any questions or concerns. I email out information regarding upcoming events, city programs
and opportunities to provide input into the city’s public
engagement programs relevant to Ward 11 residents.
Due to the new anti-spam laws you need to specifically
request our email updates; you can sign up at anytime
by emailing my office.
Southwest Calgary Ring
Road Concerns cont'd
to maintaining water quality by filtering and cleaning water
prior to entering the Glenmore reservoir and we fear this has
not been considered in the latest road design plans.
There is no other natural area comparable to the Weaselhead
Park within the City limits and the long-term effects due to
noise, light and biodiversity loss need to be addressed. Technology is available to construct a road with minimal sound
disturbance to the area, as well as reducing the environmental
impacts and allowing a wildlife corridor.
In late winter or early spring 2015 Calgary River Valleys will be
hosting a workshop calling upon experts to help come up with
viable design choices. Alberta Transportation should assess
options where the river is given the space to move and shape
the environment freely. An open concept design that spans the
Elbow River valley would allow for this. Positive local examples
can be seen on Stony Trail crossing the Bow River at Bowness
Park, or seen along the current 37th Street crossing Fish Creek
Park.
The designers will be given direction from the government
about what should be considered. If public pressure remains
exclusively “make it the cheapest”, that’s what we will get, regardless of the long term costs. If public pressure includes the
cost to the environment and community then we can get a river crossing with reduced impacts on the drinking water source
and valued Weaselhead Natural Area.
Visit www.TheWeaselhead.com for more information and to
get engaged.
