Internet Websites: www.corpuschristichurch.org http://youthcenter.corpuschristichurchorg Email Address: [email protected] Mission Statement of Corpus Christi Church We, the Catholic Parish of Corpus Christi within the Archdiocese of New York, are “One Body of Christ”. Our mission is to follow Christ’s example of love by which we are bound together with the strength of the Holy Spirit. We incorporate His teachings in our daily lives through corporal and spiritual acts, and we reach out to others with compassion, acceptance and love. This mission consists of proclamation, worship, community, and service. “To accomplish this mission, we have been given a share in the charism of the Salesian Family. This charism gives shape and provides direction and power for all we do, especially for youth.” Like St. John Bosco, we believe in the power of little things and in the significance of each member of our parish family. Actions that are most dear to us include making everyone feel welcome as part of a real family, enabling people to be the best Christian men and women possible, and helping one another feel the presence of our Lord in all things. These actions are directed not only to our own parish family members, but also to those outside our parish, who are most in need. Eliza is a 14 year old Mexican girl. She was working cleaning hotel rooms when a man, Rogerio Cardena, approached Eliza’s parents, telling them about a wellpaying job he could get for Eliza, doing the same work north of the border in the U.S. Eliza was eager to go. Her parents were reluctant. But the smooth talking man said Eliza would be in “good hands.” Eliza was taken to Houston, TX and from there to Orlando, FL. It was then that Eliza was told she would have to work as a prostitute until she paid off the $2,200 debt for her passage out of Mexico. Yes, today the U.S. government estimates that 20,000 people are trafficked annually into the U.S. through deception, fraud and coercion. These people are promised good paying jobs, but then are held against their will or are forced to work for little or no pay. The Thirty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time THEME Although the readings today are diverse, they do point out that each must use the talents given by God to perfect his or her state in life. SOME GREAT SAINTS OF THE WEEK NOVEMBER 17 - SAINT ELIZABETH OF HUNGARY This is a summary from the end of the Book of Proverbs on what cons tutes a perfect wife. This reading may annoy members of the women’s libera on movement. It must be understood in the context of its me, when a woman’s expected role was that of a wife who fulfills the du es of her home and s ll has me to show charity to the needy. Of Hungarian royal birth, Elizabeth grew up at the court of Thuringia, in Germany, where she married the kindly Ludwig when she was but fourteen. Her piety and preference for the poor drew the ire of the cour ers, but Elizabeth’s desire to follow Christ did not waver. A er Ludwig’s unexpected death in 1227, Elizabeth modeled her life on that of Saint Francis of Assisi. She founded a hospital at Marburg, where she personally tended the sick and dying. When her spiritual director ques oned her, she told him that she “received from the poor special grace and humility.” Elizabeth died in 1231. She was twenty-four. RESPONSORIAL PSALM (Ps 128) NOVEMBER 18 - SAINT ROSE PHILLIPINE DUCHESNE Respect for God is the keystone of a happy home. Born in Grenoble, France, Rose entered the Sisters of the Visita on at eighteen, but the French Revolu on cut short her novi ate. Eleven years passed before she could join the Society of the Sacred Heart at Amiens. At the age of forty-nine, she made the arduous journey to Saint Charles, Illinois, where the first house of the order was an unheated hut. Schools for girls were established despite a dearth of funds. Rose’s missionary labors on the fron er were capped with a decade of infirmity and almost con nual prayer. A contemporary said: “She was the Saint Francis of Assisi of the Society. Everything in and about her was stamped with the seal of a crucified life.” FIRST READING (Prv 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31) SECOND READING (1 Thes 5:1-6) St. Paul frequently repeats the theme that we should be ready for the coming of Christ and not be like the rest of the world, which is caught up in its own cares. THIRD READING (Mt 25:14-30) This parable of the talents is not an easy parable to understand. It refers to God’s judgment and His accoun ng of the personal gi s He has bestowed on us. It also refers to the Jews who have rejected the great gi offered through Christ. The basic meaning is that each of us must account for his or her stewardship. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY A person who thinks only of himself or herself will fail God. A good wife is a success because she is also concerned with charity outside her home. The successful steward is willing to take a chance to please his master. God gives all of us certain talents and expects us to use them. We might consider today what account we would render if we were suddenly called to judgment. NOVEMBER 21 - THE PRESENTATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY The Byzan ne Liturgy proclaim, “Today is the prelude to God’s munificence and the announcement of salva on: in the Temple of God the Virgin is seen openly, foretelling to all the coming of Christ….The most pure temple of the Savior, his most precious bridal chamber, the Virgin, sacred treasury of God’s glory, enters today into the house of the Lord, bringing with her the grace of the divine Spirit. Wherefore the angels of God are singing: ‘Behold the heavenly tabernacle!’……….Wherefore let us cry out to her with all our strength: ‘Joy to you, fulfillment of the Creator’s plan!’” At the moment when the young girl Mary was presented in the glorious Temple, “everything that humans build was already diminished by the praise in her heart.” Mon.-Sat. 7:00-7:30 • Sun. 7:00-4:30 Open Holidays Always Delicious! 31-37 Pearl Street Port Chester (914) 937-3235 Plan Ahead for Your Special Needs! • Italian American Pastries • Specialty Breads • Butter Cookies • Italian Cookies • Birthday Cakes LONGO’S PARK DELI ...
