Internet Websites: www.corpuschristichurch.org http://youthcenter.corpuschristichurchorg Email Address: [email protected] Mission Statement of Corpus Christi Church We, the Catholic Parish of Corpus Christi within the Archdiocese of New York, are “One Body of Christ”. Our mission is to follow Christ’s example of love by which we are bound together with the strength of the Holy Spirit. We incorporate His teachings in our daily lives through corporal and spiritual acts, and we reach out to others with compassion, acceptance and love. This mission consists of proclamation, worship, community, and service. “To accomplish this mission, we have been given a share in the charism of the Salesian Family. This charism gives shape and provides direction and power for all we do, especially for youth.” Like St. John Bosco, we believe in the power of little things and in the significance of each member of our parish family. Actions that are most dear to us include making everyone feel welcome as part of a real family, enabling people to be the best Christian men and women possible, and helping one another feel the presence of our Lord in all things. These actions are directed not only to our own parish family members, but also to those outside our parish, who are most in need. I come from a Catholic family in which every Sunday we would go to Church together where my uncle was a sacristan at St. Joseph Church in Fonds Parisien. It was a great experience to see the priest celebrating the Mass with such love. As a kid, when I would be home, I would call my friends over and we would pretend to celebrate the Mass together. I would always pretend to be the priest during the Mass. That is where I can see the first seed of my vocation. Coming to the United States, I moved to Danbury, CT. I became a part of the local parish which was also named after St. Joseph. I was happy there but I did not feel familiar in an environment where only English was spoken. I asked my sister if I could move to Spring Valley whre I can be with the Haitian community. It happened to be another church named also after St. Joseph where I eventually became a member. I joined a devotion group which met every Monday at the Marian Shrine in Stony Point, NY. Over the years, God has worked in my life to become a perpetual Salesian today. My perpetual profession was at the Marian Shrine where I also was for my two years of practical training. Those two years were a wonderful experience diring which I grew in spritiual life and Salesian maturity. I moved back to the formation house in Orange, NJ to study at the Immaculate Conception School of Theology. I see myself being more humble now because I know that Jesus is the one who chose me. Even though classes are challenging, I am happy to be here serving the youth and living with my Salesian brothers.” Mass for Healing Sanctuary Candle is in memory of Trevor Devas by the Coutinho Family Hosts for the Week are in memory of Trevor Coutinho by Wife and Son Sacramental Wine for the Week is in memory of Trevor Coutinho by Wife and Son Human Trafficking If you see or suspect any kind of human trafficking, note the location and/or license plate of this degrading, illegal activity and call either your local Port Chester Police Department at 914-939-1000 or the National Hotline for Human Trafficking at 1-888-373-7888. The monthly drawing is held on the 1st Sunday of the month. The 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time THEME While the main thrust of today’s liturgy is historical, the promise of a Messiah and the invita on of Jews to be members of His kingdom, we are reminded of the mercy of God, which makes that kingsdom available to each one of us. FIRST READING: (Is 25:6-10) Isaiah returns to a familiar Old Testament theme couched in terms of the mys cism of mountanis. This me the mountain refers to Jerusalem, restored a er its devasta on. It is a symbol of the messianic age. God will again visit His people, and His salva on offer will never end. RESPONSORIAL PSALM (PS 23) The song of David, which pictures God as a shepherd, is a long me favorite of Catholics and Protestants. SECOND READING (Phil 4:12-14, 19-20) Paul had a special rela onship with the community of Philippi. It was the only one from which he ever accepted financial assistance. He instructs his converts to rely on God and to judge their ac ons according to God’s standards. An important point is that he says the Phillippians should follow his example and not just his words. SOME GREAT SAINTS OF THE WEEK OCTOBER 15 - ST. TERESA OF JESUS Born in Avila, Spain, in 1515, Teresa ini ated the reform of the Carmelites with John of the Cross in 1562. Enduring intense cri cism from her sisters in religion and frequent illness, Teresa founded seventeen convents in her life me. She insisted that her sisters live simply, in the imita on of Christ’s poverty on the cross. In her wri ngs, she shared the abundance of her own inner life. Prayer, she said, “means being on terms of friendship with God, frequently conversing in secret with him who, we know loves us.” Her wri ngs on prayer earned her the tle of Doctor of the Church in 1970. OCTOBER 16 - SAINT MARGARET MARY ALACOQUE As a child in Janots, in the Burgundy region of France, Margaret Mary suffered her father’s premature death, a paralyzing illness, and cruel treatment at the hands of her grasping rela ons. At the age of 22 she entered the Visita on Order, where the elder nuns considered her slow and awkward. Two years later Jesus appeared to her, asking her to become the “beloved disciple to the Sacred Heart.” The efforts of Margaret Mary’s spiritual director, Father (later Saint) Claude de la Colombiere, brought the devo on to the a en on of the world. Margaret Mary died in 1690 at the age of 43. “I need nothing but God,” she said, “and to lose myself in the heart of Jesus.” OCTOBER 7 - SAINT IGNATIUS OF ANTIOCH GOSPEL (MT 22:1-14)) S ll speaking in parables, Jesus tells the Jews that by weak excuses they are rejec ng the Messiah and stand in danger of losing the kingdom of heaven enrely. Even those who understand His teachings must be prepared to put on the wedding garment of faith or they too will be rejected. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Everyone is free to reject God’s invita on to share in His divine life. If we accept, we must fulfill the necessary condi on, which for us is fidelity to His Church and its teachings. Of Syrian origin, Igna us served as the third bishop of An och for forty years un l he was arrested and escorted to Rome, where he died as sport in the Amphitheater around the year 107. The seven le ers he composed on this journey inspired genera ons of persecuted Chrisans. “Let me be food for the wild beasts,” he begged his brethren in Rome, “for they are my way to God, I am God’s wheat and shall be ground by their teeth so that I may become Christ’s pure bread. Pray to Christ for me that the animals will be the means of making me a sacrificial vic m for God.” Mon.-Sat. 7:00-7:30 • Sun. 7:00-4:30 Open Holidays Always Delicious! 31-37 Pearl Street Port Chester (914) 937-3235 Plan Ahead for Your Special Needs! • Italian American Pastries • Specialty Breads • Butter Cookies • Italian Cookies • Birthday Cakes LONGO’S PARK DELI ...
