‘Vulnerabilities in positioning systems’

Autonomous vehicles hold enormous promise, but depend on robust position, navigation and timing
systems. These can have serious vulnerabilities which may not be severe in advisory systems such as
GPS-based turn-by-turn navigation, but could be catastrophic in safety-critical systems. For example,
cheap and powerful GPS jammers are readily available and are known to be in use in vehicles. This talk
highlights some of the weaknesses and possible mitigation strategies.

‘How cloud-based systems and machine-driven big data can contribute to the development of

Autonomous vehicles are one of the biggest trends in the Automotive industries these days; the race to
provide the best systems and to achieve a market niche is forcing the OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to think
of alternative ways to develop such systems faster. The main challenge they have is the storage and
post-processing required to develop autonomous features. The utilisation of the cloud and the ability to
develop post-processing algorithms to manage the data in real time prove a huge advantage in the
development and validation of these features.

Graduated in Electronic Engineering, Andrew Ashby has spent over 20 years in blue chip major semiconductor
manufacturers in Field Applications, Account Management, Global Sales and Business Development roles. Since then
he has held the sales director role in a Cambridge based technology start-up company and now heads up strategic
accounts and new business development activities in the automotive and transport sectors for Cambridge based
Plextek Consulting. In this role Andrew is responsible for bringing together innovators, T1s and OEMs, to deliver both

Tom Blackie, RealVNC

John Okas, Real Wireless
John has worked in wireless and telecommunications throughout his career. Initially with Motorola and Racal in
engineering and product marketing roles. He was a founding director of NTL (now Arqiva), initially as Business
Development Director building and managing the complete commercial organisation. He also managed the R&D
Group which developed one of the first commercially available MPEG video compression systems. Then as Managing
Director - Telecommunications he was responsible for growing NTL’s wireless business and entering the fixed
telecommunications and satellite services markets. Moving to Pell Frischmann the consulting engineers, he started a
telecommunications business and was involved in several large transportation projects including the Highways
Agency’s NRTS Project which updated the motorway communication systems. Currently he operates as an
independent consultant covering technical, commercial and product strategies. He works with other consultancies
including Real Wireless, the independent wireless experts, who develop strategy, policy and practical solutions. John
has a close interest in the IoT/M2M market within the transport sector; he worked with the Weightless SIG at its

Nigel Wall, Climate Associates
Nigel Wall is an independent system engineering consultant and Director of Climate Associates Ltd: CAL helps
organisations optimise ICT system design based on understanding the whole life carbon footprint cost of deploying
innovative ICT technology compared to using current systems. Climate Associates are leading work with ITU-T SG5
and ETSI in standardising the analysis and in determining best practice. Nigel is also involved with Intelligent

Christoph heads business development for the automotive market segment at Rohde & Schwarz in Munich. Before
that he was regional manager for test and measurement, specialising in micro and millimeter-wave measurements.
Prior to joining Rohde & Schwarz in 2004, Christoph held positions at the major mobile network infrastructure
providers in installation and project management.
He holds a Telecommunication Technologies degree from the University of Applied Sciences in Berlin and in

Paul Copping, Smart City Consultant , Digital Greenwich
Paul Copping is a Smart City Consultant at the Royal Borough of Greenwich, supporting innovation strategy and
convergent urban management systems with the "Digital Greenwich" team. Digital Greenwich is particularly interested
in providing an urban test bed for autonomous vehicles. Paul previously worked at TRL Ltd - the Transport Research
Laboratory - on new technologies and emerging markets . His earlier career was in telecoms/software marketing and

Bob Cockshott, PNT Lead, Knowledge Transfer Network
Bob is PNT Lead in Innovate UK's Knowledge Transfer Network, which facilitates knowledge exchange to promote
economic growth. Bob has specialised knowledge transfer in positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) for over 8 years,
and has organised internationally renowned conferences on PNT vulnerability. Before working in knowledge transfer,

David Fidalgo, Automotive Development Manager, Altran
David Fidalgo, 33, has expertise in all aspects of automotive embedded and critical systems engineering – from
research to production, including the management of technological and engineering requirements to the
implementation and delivery of automotive applications. In his current role, David manages Altran’s global relationship
with Jaguar Land Rover and is also responsible for developing new business for Altran with other automotive sector
clients.
He began his career with JLR, working initially in their Product Definition team, which is responsible for platform
structures and PLM strategy, before moving to the Hybrid and Electric team, where he held a range of technical and
business roles, helping to define JLR’s hybrid and electric vehicle strategy and leading the verification and validation of
new technologies.
Prior to joining Altran, David also launched two start-up companies, one providing marketing strategy and branding
services, the other an engineering consultancy. He also developed and ran a number of catering and event
managements companies in Spain.
David holds an MSc in Automotive Product Engineering from Cranfield University and recently began studying for an

Paul Martin, Chief Technology Officer, Plextek
Paul joined Plextek Consulting in 2011 and was rapidly appointed Chief Technology Officer. Paul has led Plextek to
be recognised in the top 5 defence innovators in the UK across a wide range of technologies ranging from signal
processing to navigation and cyber. Before joining Plextek, Paul was Technical Director for one of the Cobham Group
of companies. Paul obtained his Doctorate in Communications Engineering from the University of Bristol and is a
Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
Paul has led the creation of world first technologies including bespoke radio interface, management and security
protocols for the world’s first mass deployed Fixed Wireless Access technology. For this he acted as the Worldwide
Technical Authority and managed the transfer of the technology to a volume manufacturer. Paul also led the
integration of novel 3G technologies into advanced system designs ranging from new RF power amplifier architectures
through to the first integration of system management incorporating both IT and cellular telecommunications domains.
Paul led the development of a world first high density 2G/3G base station creating a new market for this technology
and managed the introduction and volume manufacture of the complete product suite. The technology was sold to a
FTSE 100 company and remains in volume production. Paul has led the creation of 15 patents. Recent consultancy
engagements include development of novel vehicle navigation concepts for through to vehicle accident reconstruction

Peter Lee, Solicitor, Taylor Vinters
Peter Lee is a recognised practitioner of autonomous vehicle law. He has spoken at many international conferences
on the use of autonomous vehicles and drones; he appears as a subject matter expert in the national and international
press, recently for example he has been interviewed on BBC One Breakfast and has appeared in Wired magazine and
the Financial Times. He has authored various industry and legal commentary publications and has also been invited to
give oral evidence to the UK House of Lords Select Committee on the legal aspects of commercial drone use.
Rhys Williams, Partner, Taylor Vinters
Rhys Williams is a partner in the Commercial Technology team at Taylor Vinters. He has specialised for over 20 years
in advising technology and telecoms companies on their legal and regulatory rights and obligations during which time
he has worked on the introduction and implementation of a large number of new technologies.
