Health Related Programs A) Exercise Programs Tai Chi 24 & 48 Style Tai Chi Exercise is a class instructed by a volunteer instructor every Monday. Tai Chi - Qi Gong Integrated Exercise is not only for physical exercise but also breathing training that is especially suitable for seniors. It is a VCD exercise program. Tai Chi 108 Style Exercise is another exercise option for seniors. It will be led by a volunteer instructor. Mobilizing & Strengthening Exercise is a follow-up DVD exercise program to the fall prevention seminar in May. Scheduled on every Wed from 10:00 to 10:30 am, it is part of a series of video of “Care for Elderly Educational Video” created by different medical professions by the Center on Ageing from the University of Hong Kong. Exercise: Physical Dance – It is the new program twice a week. The exercise is led by a member as volunteer who has been doing the physical dance in China for many years. 【Due to vacation of volunteer for few months, this program is suspended till March 2015. 】 Hand Exercise on Different Acupuncture Points – It is the new program replaced the time slot for Exercise: Physical Dance. From the view point of Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are many different acupuncture points among our body. Many pain conditions are caused by stagnation. Things are not moving smoothly through the channels, causing blockages that lead to pain. Doing the gentle message on the acupuncture points is one of the ways to restore flow and eliminate these blockages. Come to join the VCD exercise program on every Friday from 2 – 2:45 pm. Seated Exercise: Qigong is a VCD exercise program for frail elderly every Monday from 9:30 to 10 am. It was designed and used by an occupational therapist team at a HK hospital. Seated Tai Chi for Arthritis is another VCD exercise program for seniors with limited mobility. It is scheduled for every Wed from 9:30 to 10:00 am. It was designed by Australian physician Dr. Paul Lam. B) Educational Program – Health Seminars regularly run by retired medical practitioners from China on senior health topics every Thursday. 3 C) Chinese Resource Library – It provides different Chinese Health Resource, including videotapes, VCDs, booklets, and barouches to increase the health knowledge of the Chinese seniors. Also, there are different types of Chinese novels, other leisure reading books and videotapes. Members have the advantage of being able to borrow books and videotapes on health. 2. Language Improvement Program – Different Levels of English Conversation Classes are planned with the objective of improving the language ability of members so they can better integrate themselves into the community. 3. Interest Classes – Singing Group, Handicraft, Chinese Opera Singing, Chinese Knotting & Paper Cuts and Karaoke Time are held for the purpose of exploration and developing different potential of the members. 【Chinese Opera Singing is another program with live band on every Monday at 1 pm. 】 4. Sharing Session – Afternoon Tea Session and Monthly Members Meeting are a weekly group sharing session with snack. Game Time is a session to let seniors to connect through different games, including Chinese pool, Chinese chess, mahjong and various computer games. 5. Service Group – Scarf Knitting Group is one of the service groups to encourage members to serve the community according to their ability. The finished products will be donated to individuals and families such as New Beginnings, domestic abuse clients, and International District Housing Alliance residents. The group has been invited by Legacy House to share their knitting skills with the residents to achieve the purpose of motor-skill training. 【Starting in July, 2012 the format of the service is changed. Seniors are welcome to do knitting during regular open hours of the Center.】 6. Birthday / Seasonal Party – This is a monthly potluck party for birthdays and/or either Chinese or American festivals. The birthday party is scheduled for current members and active participants within the years. 【The Party for Nov Birthdays and Appreciation of Sunshine Garden Volunteers is scheduled on Monday, Nov 24 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.】 7. Hair Cutting Service - This program runs bi-weekly on Mondays from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. $3 charge for members and $5 for non-members. Maximum: 9 seniors per day. Advanced reservations are required no later than Friday. If there are fewer than 3 seniors, the service will be cancelled. 8. DVD Presentation and Sharing – This is an interactive program by a volunteer once a month on Friday, Nov 14 from 1 pm to 2 pm. The theme this month is “Birth of Civilization”. 9. Intergeneration Program with Lakeside School: Chinese New Year: It’s the annual service learning opportunities for high schoolers who learn Chinese to interact with seniors from Sunshine Garden. The visit is scheduled on Friday, Nov 14 from 9:30 to 12 noon. The schoolers would learn from seniors on writing the Chunlian (the spring couplet), cutting out Chuanghua or chun (the spring character for decorating windows or door), also, using the chopsticks to enjoy the various delicious Chinese New Year food at noon time. 10. “Nutrition & Holidays Food” Seminar:Do you want to know the smart way to eat those yummy foods for thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings? Naomi Chang will continue to share her knowledge with you on Friday, Nov 21 from 10 am to 11 am. She majored in Community Health Education and has different working experiences with government department and social service agencies. 11. Monthly Site Leanings: How to use the Ticket Vending Machine : This free monthly program helping seniors address daily problems will focus on how to use the ticket vending machine. Seniors would learn how to add value or buy the monthly pass for ORCA card on the Ticket Vending Machine at Chinatown on Friday, Nov 21 from 2 – 2:30 pm.
