Throughout the lifespan, play supports neurological growth and development while building complex, skilled, f lexible, responsive, and socially
adept brains. Play also improves the natural ability to convey emotions.
Yet clients who suffer from early trauma sometimes experience a reduced
capacity for play which may impact their potential for spontaneous laughter,
joy, excitement, creativity and connection.
During this conference, leading researchers and clinicians will draw upon
the evidence-based research in neuroscience and positive psychology to
examine ways that clinicians can stimulate client resilience, creativity,
and spontaneity using play. Through lectures, case presentations, and
interactive panels, participants will increase their therapeutic efficacy by
developing skills which enhance their receptiveness and presence during
client sessions. Innovative methods for including humor, positive psychology
and play in the therapeutic milieu will be explored with the goal of
bringing more joy and creativity into the therapeutic process.

NEW SEMINAR
New Perspectives on Treatment of
Trauma and PTSD: Developmental,
Neurobiological, and Evolutionary
Orientations
834.1 Psychology 0.6 CEU
Lifespan Learning Institute is approved by the American
Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Lifespan Learning Institute
maintains responsibility for this program and its content. UCLA Extension is approved by California Board
of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) to provide continuing
education for MFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEP (provider
#PCE 553). These workshops offer 6 CE credits.
Traumatic events have increasing relevance and importance in today’s world. This workshop explores the indepth meaning and impact of psychic trauma on the
mind, the brain, development, and behavior. Various
types of trauma are investigated, including personal
loss, family abuse, natural disasters, and societal atrocities. This seminar provides a thorough investigation of
the origins of post-traumatic symptoms and the PTSD
diagnosis. Freud’s seminal concept of repetition compulsion is explored in terms of meaning, functions, and
the means by which human beings tend to re-enact
their childhood traumas. Neurobiological and evolutionary perspectives are presented to relate how trauma
impacts the brain, the unconscious, and the adaptability
of the human species. A 4-stage treatment model of
PTSD is described, along with clinical techniques and
tools for crisis intervention and recovery. Mental health
practitioners including psychologists, MFTs, LCSWs,
LPCCs, addiction counselors and others will benefit
from the skills and research presented. This workshop
includes both intermediate and advanced content
applicable to mental health professionals who have a
wide range of backgrounds and experience. Internet
access required to retrieve course materials.

Play, Creativity, Mindfulness, and
Neuroscience in Psychotherapy
(3-Day Option)
873.3 Psychology 1.9 CEU
Lifespan Learning Institute is approved by the American
Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Lifespan Learning Institute
maintains responsibility for this program and its content. UCLA Extension is approved by California Board
of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) to provide continuing
education for MFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEP (provider
#PCE 553). These workshops offer 19.5 CE credits.
Throughout the lifespan, play supports neurological
growth and development while building complex, skilled,
flexible, responsive, and socially adept brains. Play also
improves the natural ability to convey emotions. Yet clients who suffer from early trauma sometimes experience
a reduced capacity for play which may impact their
potential for spontaneous laughter, joy, excitement, creativity and connection. Some clinicians are comfortable
integrating improvisation and playfulness into their
practice. Others have difficulty embracing the uncertainty
which may emerge, particularly when delving into the
pain experienced by their clients. During this conference,
leading researchers and clinicians will draw on the evidence-based research in neuroscience and positive
psychology to examine ways that clinicians can stimulate
client resilience, creativity and spontaneity using play.
Through lectures, case presentations and interactive
panels, participants will increase their therapeutic efficacy
by developing skills which enhance their receptiveness
and presence during client sessions. Presentations will
also provide skills for connecting empathically and attuning to non-verbal body reactions and movements so
therapists can resonate with clients at a deep, somatic
level. Innovative methods for including humor, positive
psychology and play in the therapeutic milieu will be
explored with the goal of bringing more joy, creativity into
the therapeutic process.
