Lion Ernie Allen
Lions all! I am sorry to advise that our friend and fellow Lion Ernie Allen passed on 27th September. He fought a brave
battle against the odds and surrendered bravely. Ernie’s funeral was held at the Founders Chapel in Rikit Street, Taupo
at 11.00am on Thursday 2nd October.

Noozletta From Kuaotonu Beach
This week Noozletta has been compiled from the great outdoors. Sitting on a
verandah, the sound of waves breaking against the shore and birds in song all
around has been most inspiring this week!

Thumbs Up to District 202L Lions Clubs for ‘Just Asking’ and giving us a net gain of 7
members for the first quarter. Can we double that for the next quarter?
From Our District Governor’s Desk
I came down with a cold last Sunday and was thankful I had only one club to visit this week - Piopio Lions. But what a
visit! With their partners and a large contingent from Otorohanga and Te Kuiti Lions and the three who escorted me from
Rosetown, mixed together with a Mexican theme, and you can imagine how the RSA Hall in Piopio sounded. The
caterers (from Piopio’s Fat Pigeon - to give them a plug) gave us a fantastic meal of tacos, wraps, chilli-con-carne and
everything that went with it. With warmth and friendship and hilarity, I gave my DG presentation with a diminishing voice
that had almost disappeared by the next day. Congratulations Piopio Lions for a wonderful evening, and for all the hard
work you do in your community - raising funds with a Paddy’s market and hot-dog caravan, the Aria Sports Day, Pet
Day, and Fieldays.
During the last three months you have introduced sixty-two new members to Lions - fantastic. But I’m afraid we can’t sit
on our laurels. We have lost fifty-four - yes fifty-four. Just think where we would be if we didn’t promote ourselves…
October is Lions New Member month, so now is the time for everyone to Ask One to come along and join us. We really
do need to keep Strengthening the Pride.
October is also Sharing the Vision month, one of Lions four special service action campaigns. Let’s hear what projects
you are doing with the visually impaired - sure Noozletta editor Lou would welcome your articles.
With many clubs organising Christmas raffles, don’t forget to include the district Lions calendar in the prize, they are a
Lions publicity tool so have them available on the sales table too. Only $5 from Environment Chairman Trev.
My week ended with a visit from my brother and his wife from England, so with family and the remains of a cold, how
true does my Saturday horoscope read… While you’ll need to keep your professional hat on over the weekend, you also
need a chance to unwind, relax and find time to hear yourself think.

Wow what a night indeed at Pio Pio! Many members came suitably attired – particularly the señoritas from Rosetown,
Pio Pio Lion Jeff Andrew’s wife Shirley, Pio Pio Lion Stu Clark & partner Sue Sands! Way to go everyone!
Pio Pio Lions were taking no chances, as soon as they saw Melva Carter and Lou Fielder enter the building, anything
precious was hastily removed ! Vacquero (Mexican cowboy) Bob Dawson managed to keep his gun holstered (much to
the disappointment of our Lion magpies) and officiated the first half of the evening superbly. Otorohanga Lions were
definitely the best dressed, although for Health & Safety reasons were asked to remove their hats during fellowship!
District Governor Paula, who had been slightly under the weather, championed her speech despite her diminishing
voice, delivering President Joe Preston’s message and explaining the significance of both his banner and her own. DG
Paula informed us that our district has had a net gain of 7 members in the first quarter of the year and now sports 7 Leos
clubs! The District Governor then presented chevrons to the following Pio Pio Lions (from left to right of photo 2), Gavin
Todd 30 years, Brian Turner 20 years, Stu Clark 15 years, Neil Fairhurst 20 years and Ken Perry a whopping 35 years!
Congratulations to you all! As usual, Tail Twister Peter Darke, recounted a plethora of tales, eliciting ‘mucho dinero’ as
well as laughter! He really does know how to work the crowd! Dessert was served – ‘churros’ (see picture above) with
ice cream and a choice of chocolate chilli sauce or salted caramel sauce…must admit, didn’t notice the chilli till later! All
in all, an extremely entertaining evening with awesome food! Top marks Pio Pio!

It’s In The Bag!
The Matamata Lions recently ran their annual Fertiliser Drive, with this year’s recipients being the Pohlen Foundation
Trust and the Matamata College Touring Teams.
This was another successful year with both organisations providing ample helpers to assist with the bagging and selling
of our products. We had a fantastic turn out of Lions and their partners and the weather was on our side.
We sold 650 bags of general fertiliser – Matamata must be going to have a lot of beautiful gardens this summer!

From Our First Vice District Governor’s Desk
Greetings fellow Lions.
Only one Club visit for me this past Week. On Tuesday I had the pleasure of visiting the Taupo Pakeke Lions Club at
their luncheon Meeting. What a wonderful, busy, enthusiastic, friendly Club they are. Thank you President Warren and
Members for your hospitality. It was great to be able to induct your new Member Roger Smitheram. Welcome to our
Lions Family Roger, I am sure you will enjoy your Membership. The Taupo Pakeke Club is certainly doing its best
to “Strengthen the Pride” by having another 2-3 new Members to be Inducted during October.
On a sad note, we all share in your sad loss of Lion Ernie Allen, and pass on our condolences to his family.
I was able to attend the Meeting of my own Cub (Opotiki) on Thursday night, and it was good to be able to catch up with
everyone again. A busy time coming up for the Club, and 3 new Members to be inducted during October.
Keep up the good work out there Lions, make sure you get a copy of the District Calendar, and remember to “Just Ask
1” person to join our Lions Family, but it is equally important to retain the Members that you have, so that we can
continue to “Reach out and make a Difference”.

Te Kuiti Lions Brave The Weather To Assist Youth Again
Te Kuiti Lions Andrew Walker and Rob Gordon have had a busy weekend supporting Te
Kuiti High School Netball girls with their fundraising event. This weekend heralded the
North Island Motorcross Champs and Te Kuiti High netball girls had the job of catering for
the event, which usually attracts between 300-500 people. Lions Rob and Andrew got
down and dirty, braving wind and driving rain, to cook hot dogs and chips for competitors
and supporters, Saturday through to Sunday. The icing on the cake… having to tow the
caravan out of a muddy quagmire late this afternoon. You guys are LEGENDS!!!

Te Puke Kiwicoast Lions Service Celebrated
Te Puke Kiwicoast Lions recently presented service
certificates to well deserving members. Several members
have completed thirty years of service. Well done ladies,

Weather Does Not Deter Successful Garage Sale!
The Ngaruawahia Lions Club held their Annual Garage Sale yesterday and despite the nasty weather had a great
turnout of locals looking for a bargain. Friday afternoon the members spent collecting items and setting up the tables of
goods with some quality items donated. A total of approximately $3600 was raised with the majority of the proceeds
going to the Foundation for the Blind as our annual donation. A tiring but enjoyable day was well rewarded with the sum
raised and the members had their usual lot of fun and laughter, a great club activity.

Mount Manganui Lions Update
I was really impressed with the great atmosphere at our social meeting when Libby Moore a Mount College student
spoke so well of her experiences and the personal benefits from the Outward Bound Course she recently attended.
Also, special Lion Neil Clarke inducting the 3 new members: Michael Taft; Barry Jamieson (a previous member) and
wife Lee; and Simon Kurt, wife Pamela. A memorable occasion.
I wish to congratulate all who attended for providing such a wonderful warm atmosphere and welcome. There’s really
something special about the Mount Lions family, and isn’t it great seeing new members joining us?
Here is certainly an example of the power of photographs to hide the cold and discomfort that people can feel when
exposed to the power of nature, while also showing how shared discomfort can bring out the best in the people involved!
Note though that they are not being rushed by spectators at the Car Parade on Marine Parade. In photo are our
barbecue chief George, Eric and Nigel carrying out quality control, and Garry the onion-slicing king!
The above photo shows the quality of the work of our Onion Slicer Extraordinaire! I wonder what Nigel is happily
grabbing out of the box.

Help Lions Reach the Special Centennial Vision Goal
By now, you've heard about our Centennial Service Challenge goal of serving 100 million
people by 2017 in the areas of youth, hunger, the environment and, this month, through
the Sharing the Vision Global Service Action Campaign. While it may seem like an
overwhelming challenge, we've helped break it down by setting special goals within each
area. Our special vision goal is to serve 10 million children with eye care through activities
such as vision screenings, low vision aids, Braille education, mobility and white canes,
sight restoring surgery, eye banking and eyeglass recycling. This month, plan a vision
project that helps a child to see better. Download the Sharing the Vision Planning Guide for
more project ideas and help getting started.

Support Bethlehem Te Puna Lions ‘Wheelie Good Fun Day’ – Sunday 9th November
Bethlehem Te Puna Lions Club are on a mission to raise $30,000 to get
10 Trikes for Kids like Fergus (see photo).
We gave Fergus one earlier this year and his smile so inspired us that
he agreed to help us work for 10 more. It is interesting how feed-back
affects us all.
It is with the help of Te Whanau Kotahi (a DHB successor) where the
children they work with are facing long-term delays in development
and/or disability and to lead a full life.
Lions & TWK’s big development from this is to have a Wheelie Good
Fun Day on Sunday 9th November, this year at the Tauranga Racecourse, only a month away.
Get in via a $5 entry ticket, which includes a raffle ticket and prize for $4000 worth of goods and much more. A few of
the activities will be chargeable but we are aiming for sponsorship of majority of activities with spot prizes. Families and
kids are to bring their ‘wheels’ to ride around the car park and activities. Classic, vintage cars will be there along with
trucks to look at. A wheel based theme day is to be enjoyed by all for minimal cost and big spot prizes to be won. Fun
Run Relays around the horse track are to be entered as well.
Our focus for the fun day is to raise funds for the purchase of 10 trikes (adapted 3 wheelers) which would help
children with Cerebral Palsy and other disabilities to ride bikes and enjoy family outings. They become more
mobile and independent.

YOUTH EXCHANGE
We have a gorgeous young lady coming to New Zealand from Alexandra, Minnesota, USA under the Lions Youth
Exchange Program.
Cami Warren is 17. When I say she is gorgeous I mean it, her photo says it all. She will arrive in Rotorua on the 13th of
December at 9.15 am, so we need someone to pick her up and host her until the Youth Camp starts on the 27th of
December 2014. We also need hosting for her after the camp – 6th January to the 20th of January 2015.
She will depart from Rotorua on the 20th of January 2015 at 5.45pm.
