Dedication of the Lateran Basilica
8th/9th November 2014
WE ARE PART OF A GREATER UNITY
When we celebrate Mass in any one of our 4 parishes, we gather in
prayer, worship and partnership, united with Christians all over
the world. Today’s Feast of the Dedication of the Basilica of St.
John Lateran – the mother of all Churches – is important because it
represents our common identity as Church, the Body of Christ.
Both the readings and the meaning of this feast remind us that we
celebrate, not simply a building, but the living reality of the Church.
In a sense, this feast is a celebration of our own life and the life we
receive from God through the Church, as we open ourselves to
others, even becoming vulnerable in order to be the presence of
Christ to them.

St. Paul puts it beautifully when he says ‘for the Temple of God is
holy and you are that Temple’. So we are all called to holiness and
to live out this faith in fellowship and in our worship. Let us
remember today our fellow Christians in different parts of the
world whose very existence is under threat, together we are all the
living Temple of God and the Body of Christ.
On this Remembrance Sunday Lord, bring all who have died in
wars into your peace and grant them the fullness of your love.
