National Peanut Butter Lover’s Month is a celebration of the greatness of peanut butter and those who love it. John Harvey Kellogg first patented Peanut Butter on November 4, 1895. Peanut Butter grew so popular that for its 100th birthday in November 1995, the entire month was dedicated to Peanut Butter Lover’s everywhere. In celebration of this month it is estimated that people will eat over 65 million pounds of Peanut Butter. This may seem like a crazy amount but over 90% over the homes in America contain people who consume peanut butter. If you aren’t that crazy about peanut butter and your home isn’t a part of this 90%, then here are 5 reasons why you should change that and join the Peanut Butter Lovers. 1. Peanuts contribute more than $4 billion to the U.S economy every year. Buy purchasing peanut butter you are actually contributing to the economy and helping people out. 2. Peanut Butter has natural oils that will get chewing gum out of hair and clothing without damaging them. Some of the vitamins and minerals in peanut butter are actually said to be very good for hair and skin. 3. Peanut Butter – the natural kind – is actually good for you. Peanut Butter contains over 30 essential nutrients, is full of protein, and naturally cholesterol free. Eating a tablespoon of peanut butter is known to help lower high blood sugar. The protein and Vitamin E in peanut butter is good for dogs. 4. Eating a peanut butter & jelly sandwich for lunch will help the environment. The PB& J campaign is an effort that encourages people to stop eating meat based lunches in favor of plant-based lunches like a Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwich because it will reduce your carbon footprint by almost 3.5 pounds. Eating a plant based lunch like a PB&J also conserves water and will save land. So if everyone starts bringing PB&J’s for lunch, it would greatly help the envi- roned. This shouldn’t be a problem since the average child already eats around 1, 500 PB&J’s before the graduate high school. 5. It goes great with all sorts of things. Peanut Butter is one of the most widely used snack items. People use it on food ranging from celery and bananas to bacon and other types of sandwiches. Peanut Butter is used in 4 of the top 10 candy bars in the U.S and peanuts were named the number one snack nut after accounting for two-thirds of all snack-nuts. As you can see, peanut butter is one amazing food item and has many great qualities that deserved to be loved, so join the celebration of National Peanut Butter Lover’s Month and go buy some peanut butter for you and your friends, unless you have peanut allergy, then stay away at all costs. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving when stores put on super sales and people go a little crazy, rushing to get the best deals. Black Friday can be very stressful and overwhelming, but it’s shopping so who cares! Whether you are shopping for yourself or your loved ones, shopping is fun and getting to shop great sales is even better. Last year for Black Friday the most visited stores included Amazon, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Kohl’s, Apple, and Fry’s Electronics. These stores all offered exclusive deals that had prices dropping drastically, some items dipping as low as $1. Other stores that are expected to be popular this year are Target, Macy’s and JC Penney’s. Many of these stores open ridiculously early so people have even more time to shop. If you want to start planning your own Black Friday Expedition, theBlackFriday.com already has store hours and deals up for this year. While saving money and buying cool things is pretty awesome, everyone should remember that spending time with family is even better. Some stores open early on Thanksgiving, but everyone’s time will be better spent at home, making memories and showing your appreciation for your loved ones. Be thankful that you are enjoying Thanksgiving in the safety of your home and aren’t being trampled by crazy people at a store. There have been an estimated of 90 injuries and 7 deaths in past Black Friday events, so if you do go shopping, please be considerate and respectful to everyone, including those working at the stores because they have likely had a really long day. Enjoy your Thanksgiving, and save the shopping for Friday, be thankful for what you have, and then go get your crazy person shop on. Teacher Spotlight: Mrs. Goff By: Brittany Allison As you all know our French program was likely going to end last year. Fortunately for us the school had a retired, yes retired, French teacher referred to us, her name is Mrs. Goff. Although THE PIRATE CHRONICLE Mrs. Goff had been retired for a good ten years she has taught for thirty years, French of course. She was born in Quebec City, Canada, and lived in Europe for a couple of years as a graduate student. When she got married she lived in New York at the time and then moved to California where she said it was easier to find a teaching job. When asked about the whole zero period Mrs. Goff said, “It’s hard on the students, it is too early, you can see in their eyes that they are still tired, but we manage.” She told me that she has to teach two semesters of French in one semester, so that is why the zero period exists. That period goes longer than any other period of the day. Many students complain about having a first period, try having a zero that starts at 7:00am! Mrs. Goff says she likes Wheatland and it has been a great experience teaching in a new setting, but after this year she is going back to retirement. Well to be exact Thanksgiving Day is always the forth Thursday in November. Every year we use this holiday as a chance to come together with family, sit around a table, eat lots of fantastic food, and I don’t know what y’all do but my family just loves to sit there and talk about all the stupid things we’ve done in our lives. We crack jokes, laugh till we cry, and leave feeling happy as can be. It makes you wonder though, what was the very first thanksgiving like? Was there a lot of Bickering? Was it awkward? Who was there? Let’s see. Technically, the very first thanksgiving was a feast shared between Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians in 1621. However, in 1863, Abraham Only half of the ship’s occupants survived to see the new world. The surviving colonists made an alliance with the Native American Wampanoag tribe. This alliance would last 50 years and will become one of the prime examples of harmony between the colonist and Native Americans. So in 1621, the Governor, William Bradford, hosted a feast of celebration Lincoln proclaimed that thanksgiving for the colonists. The governor had be a national holiday held every No- also invited their new allies, the vember. Wheatland vs. Sutter November 7th! By: Christian Diaz The Sutter Huskies are hands down Wheatland’s oldest and most fierce rival. Each year, this is game that the Wheatland faithful come out from far and wide hoping to see a Pirate victory. The stands are always packed with football fans young and old, rooting on our boys in blue. The deplorable thing about the match-up, is that Wheatland has been on the losing end of most games in recent history. Wheatland’s best year against Sutter as of late came in 2010 when they handed the Huskies two losses in the same season, the later one being a decisive 30-6 victory in the first round of the NSCIF playoffs. Although we enjoyed that short moment of sweet revenge, since 2004 Wheatland’s regular season record against Sutter is 1-10, according to Wheatland's varsity football coach Mike Van Dyke. You have to look back to 1998 to find a Wheatland victory previous to 2010. Although the Huskies are coming in undefeated and a heavy favorite this year, the community and student body will be out in full force rooting for an upset in 2014.
