Looking for a way to manage portfolio risk? Alternative investments may be a good
choice.
An alternative investment is loosely defined as an investment in something other than
publicly-traded, long-only stocks, bonds or cash. Alternative investments are typically
used to enhance the risk-adjusted return of a portfolio that can be achieved through
diversifying the portfolio across strategies that maintain low correlation to equity and
bond markets; depending on a client’s risk profile this could also be achieved through
return-enhancing strategies.
The alternative investment world is primarily made up of three buckets: hedge funds,
private equity and real assets. Real assets could include things such as real estate, timber
or infrastructure. Private equity will typically include private equity funds and venture
capital, Hedge funds will provide exposure to investment strategies that typically have
less correlation to equity and fixed income markets.
This type of investment shares typical characteristics. Every investment has its own
share of risk and alternative investments are no exception. But some of the common risk
factors include:

Alternative investments as part of a portfolio
During the 2008 stock market plunge, many investors watched the value of their
securities decline and their overall portfolio value shrink. A way to hedge against this is
through asset diversification.
There are a number of ways investors can diversify a portfolio. Risk can be reduced by
owning stocks from different sectors, bonds from different issuers with different credit
ratings and maturities, or a variety of both equity and fixed income investments.

exposure. These investments are known as “non-correlated asset classes” meaning they
are less likely to suffer the ups and downs of the stock, bond and cash markets. By losing
less value as compared to a volatile benchmark, an investment may recover faster and grow more quickly even if the growth rate is lower.
For example, since 1990, the HFRI Fund Weighted Composite Index aggregating the performance of hedge funds captured about 50% of the upside and about 25% of the

downside of the S&P 500 Index returns. Yet hedge funds as a whole as represented by the HFRI Fund Weighted Composite Index benchmark still outperformed the S&P 500
by around 330% in cumulative performance over the same period. Limited downside protection also resulted in a faster recovery from the 2008 market dislocation.*
Of course, past performance does not guarantee future
results and this example is simply intended to highlight
a strategic concept. In the very same way that the hedge
fund index “gained more by losing less” during periods
of volatility (compared with the broader market index),
allocating a portion of your stock portfolio to a hedge fund
may offer additional diversification to help smooth out the
harmful effects that wide-ranging price variations may have
over time.
Another option for investors may be investing in a mutual
fund that holds alternative investments. This provides
diversification as well as the professional management
associated with any mutual fund.
Know the risks and seek advice
It is important to understand the risks and considerations
of alternative investments before making a purchase. They
are subject to different securities industry regulations and
due diligence is critical. Because of these considerations,
alternative investments are suitable only for investors
who meet minimum investment experience and asset level
requirements.

held on November 12 from 9am-2pm and will coincide with the kick-off for the
new Mid-Month Sunset Market and Music Festival which debuts November 15,

give-aways, street performances, a ribbon cutting and a Market raffle with prizes
including gift certificates and gift baskets. City Manager Shane Crawford, the

Waists keep growing every year and there’s no end in sight. If obesity rates continue on
their current trajectories, by 2030, the obesity rate in many states will double. If all
states continue on their trajectories, by 2030, 13 states would have adult obesity rates of
more than 60%. An additional 39 states, including Florida would have rates topping 50%.
And all 50 states could have rates of more than 44% percent.
Obesity-related diseases and health-care costs are poised to sky-rocket. At the current
rate, America’s obesity-related medical costs are projected to increase by $48 billion to
$66 billion a year. Medical costs of obesity are estimated at $175 billion per year.

New cases of type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke, hypertension and
arthritis could increase 1100% if our country doesn’t get its weight problem under
control. Obesity could contribute to 2.4 million new cases of type 2 diabetes; 6.1 million new cases of heart disease and stroke; 5.2 million new cases
of hypertension; 3.2 million new cases of arthritis; and nearly 870,000 new cases of obesity-related cancer.
The bad news: you and I pay for the progression of weight problems in the way of higher taxes and a gigantic strain on our healthcare system.
For a slightly obese person of 5 feet, 10 inches and 210 pounds, a 5% BMI reduction would mean losing 10 or 11 pounds. The good
news is that just a 5% BMI reduction translates into a potential national health-care cost savings of $34 billion during the next 20 years.

So what can we do to protect ourselves from these toxins, which can build up in our body and result in compromised health?

metals. First of all, get your doctor to check for heavy metals. Unfortunately, that is not usually done with a blood test. Per
Harrison’s Textbook of Medicine the test is done with a urine heavy metal EDTA test. This is the
most accurate. In the Tampa Bay area, I see a lot of Lead in my patients. Lead can be found in the
body if the patient grew up in homes with lead based paint, lived around coal burning electrical
plants, lived in a metropolitan area or had lead water pipes in the home. The best way to rid the body
of lead per the medical textbook is IV Chelation Therapy. This is where a chemical EDTA is given
and it pulls lead and other heavy metals out of the bones and fat tissues to be excreted in the urine.
This may require 10-20 treatments.
You may be wondering if there are simple, natural ways to detoxify yourself. Yes there are, maybe
not from heavy metals specifically, but from other toxins. Here are a few things I recommend to my
patients:

Vitamin C, a study of people exposed to toxic chemicals found that buffered vitamin C restored
immune function in most of the people. Vitamin C can detoxify most all poisons; Tylenol
overdose, rattlesnake bits, black widow spider bites and many other poisons because Vitamin
C can add an electron and make the poison harmless. For an acute bite or toxic exposure, the
Vitamin C must be given intravenously. But Vitamin C given orally is a great way to daily
detoxify toxins. I take between 5-10 grams a day in a little juice. More grams than that, I will
get diarrhea. Remember each person is different. You may want to start at 1-3 grams a day.
Start off with less and work up to where you have loose, but still solid stool.
Glycine, an amino acid, is found in chicken between the skin and the meat. Most of us eat
skinless chicken so we don’t get much Glycine. I give my patients about 5 grams of glycine
a day. It is a great detoxifier. 30 grams of Glycine a day for 3 days will drop uric acid levels
to normal. Uric acid causes Gout. A number of amino acids have the ability to bind toxins
so they will be eliminated. Protein is made of a number of amino acids, which is just one of
the reasons protein is so important to your overall health.

A Year of Optimism

This year, we developed the budget for fiscal year 2015 with optimism. Our economy shows several signs of sustained
improvement. Tourism is at an all-time high, airport passenger growth is rising, development review activity is nearly
twice as high as two years ago, building permits and inspections are demonstrating sustained growth, the real estate
market continues to improve and sales tax revenues are showing modest growth.
There are many factors that affect the county budget. Most services are paid for through the general fund, which is
supported through property taxes. The real estate market is continuing its recovery from the Great Recession. This
year’s proposed budget shows an increase in general fund revenue by $19 million.

With these positive signs pointing to an upturn in our economy, our staff commits themselves to serve the public by
prioritizing and delivering core county services to bring a higher level of service to our citizens. We are building constructive relationships with our partners

downturn drove property values
down, which meant a decrease
in revenue for the county. Other
funding sources, such as permitting
fees for new construction, also
suffered. But things are looking up
this year.
With greater consumer confidence,
tourist development tax (or “bed
tax”) collections have increased.
Penny for Pinellas funding has
also risen, allowing us to proceed
with projects such as utility
improvements in parks, collecting
parcels for affordable workforce
housing, radio tower replacement
and emergency shelter buildings.
The newly implemented surface
water assessment allows us to
manage the stormwater system
in the unincorporated area more
closely. With the help of these
funds, we can continue our efforts to
reduce flooding and improve water
quality for our residents and to
comply with federal requirements
related to the stormwater system.
It is in this spirit of optimism,
cooperation and community that
the budget for fiscal year 2015 was

SEPTEMBER, THE HOTTEST?... ANCIENT ARIZONA VILLAGE... CAFFEINE INFUSED

SEPTEMBER, THE HOTTEST?... According to NASA, this past month of September was the warmest in historical temperatures
records that date back more than 130 years. The global average temperature for September 2014 was 1.38 degrees Fahrenheit above
the 1951-1980 historical average for the month. September 2014 marks the second consecutive record-breaking warmest month,
as August 2014 (globally) also was the warmest such month
in NASA’s records. But wait, there’s more. This past May

(globally) was the hottest on record too. Though temperatures
for the rest of the year remain to be seen, this year’s recordbreaking warmth indicates that 2014 might go down as the world’s hottest year on record!
ANCIENT ARIZONA VILLAGE... Archeologists have unearthed a village believed
to be about 1,300 years old & containing more than 50 sandstone-walled homes at a U.S.
national park in northeast Arizona. The discovery was made by a team that surveyed
part of the Petrified Forest National Park during this past summer & broadly dated the
homes & other artifacts found at the site to between 200 AD & 700 AD. The surveyors
found the first traces of some 50 to 75 buried “pit houses” in sand dunes & estimate the
village could have had as many as 125 inhabitants. Researchers said this find was special because it was so large & interesting because it had so many structures
& features all in one spot. Along with ancient pottery, the team also fund rudimentary tools made of stone & petrified wood as well as pendants crafted from
shells. No human remains were found. The park, which straddles Arizona’s Apache & Navajo counties, is a popular tourist attraction, visited by an average
of 600,000 people a year.
CAFFEINE-INFUESED UNDERWEAR, A BUST... Bras, girdles & leggings infused with caffeine & sold as weight loss aids were more decaf light
than espresso bold, & the companies that sold them have agreed to refund money to customers & pull their ads. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said
Wacoal America & Norm Thompson Outfitters were
accused of deceptive advertising that claimed their
caffeine-infused clothing would cause the wearer
to lose weight & have less cellulite. In the case of
Oregon-based Norm Thompson, the company sold
clothing made with Lytess brand fabric infused with
caffeine which, the company said, would break down
fat. In fact the company said in one advertisement
that “Slimming & firming results are visible in under
a month.” Wacoal America, based in New Jersey,
also advertised that its clothing had micro-capsules
with caffeine, vitamin E & other chemicals that it
said led to weight loss. In one of their ads, they cited
the “revolutionary iPant new shapewear tht works

substantial weight loss. The FTC also said refunds
would total about $1.5 million.

marriage was based on monetary worth. The family

Tampa, Fla. (Oct. 21, 2014) – Busch Gardens® Tampa will host the Run for Wildlife 5k,
benefiting the SeaWorld® & Busch Gardens® Conservation Fund, on Saturday, Nov. 22 at
7:30 a.m. The inaugural run gives participants the opportunity to wind through the park for
most of the 3.1 miles, all while supporting animal conservation efforts worldwide.
“This is a chance for guests of all ages to support the Conservation Fund’s mission to support wildlife conservation, education and research worldwide,” says
Busch Gardens Park President Jim Dean.
Registration is currently open and runners must register in advance; participants cannot register the day of the event. This chip-timed race includes animal and
character appearances throughout the course.

CLEARWATER, FL – For the eighth consecutive year, Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas
County has earned a four-star rating, the highest award for adherence to good governance and fiscal responsibility by Charity Navigator, the country’s
largest and most-utilized independent evaluator of charities. Charity Navigator’s coveted four-star rating is given to nonprofits that practice exceptional fiscal
management, good governance, and commitment to accountability and transparency in fulfilling their mission.
In his letter to Habitat Pinellas, Charity Navigator’s President and CEO Ken Berger noted, “Only one percent of the charities we rate have received at least
eight consecutive four-star evaluations, indicating that Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas County outperforms most other charities in America. This ‘exceptional’
designation from Charity Navigator differentiates Habitat for Humanity of
Pinellas County from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their
trust.”
“People can give to Habitat Pinellas with confidence that we are using funds
in the best, most effective way possible,” said Mike Sutton, Chief Executive
Officer of Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas County. “Out of every dollar donated
to Habitat Pinellas, 94.7 cents is spent on direct program expenses that help us
advance our mission. Our donations are building homes and creating opportunities
throughout Pinellas County for low-income families and individuals in need of
decent, affordable homes.”
Charity Navigator works to help charitable donors make intelligent giving
decisions by providing information on more than five thousand charities
nationwide and by evaluating their financial health. It calculates each charity’s
score based upon several broad criteria, including how much is spent per dollar
raised, what percentage of funds goes to programs vs. administrative and fundraising expenses, and the organization’s long-term financial health. It then assigns
a rating from one to four, with four being the best rating.
Since 1985, Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas County has
constructed 312 homes to date for struggling families in
Pinellas County, using locally raised funds. Volunteers and
the future homeowners construct the homes, which are sold
at no profit and financed with a zero-interest loan. Habitat
Pinellas homeowner candidates earn 30 to 80 percent of area
median income. For Pinellas County, that translates to as little
as $22,500 a year for a family of four. Candidates must also
demonstrate need for adequate shelter; ability to pay back
a zero-interest loan and willingness to partner with Habitat
Pinellas to invest 250 to 350 sweat equity hours. Mortgage
monies are used to build even more homes, making each
donation to Habitat a perpetual legacy to the community.
Habitat believes that home ownership contributes to family
stability, leading in turn to community stability. Additionally,
Habitat Pinellas raises funds through their ReStore, a home
improvement outlet where donated household and building

Tough Times For Tampa

The state of Tampa Bay Sports is not looking so bright these days
as 2 of the Bay’s 3 professional teams have seen better times. For
the Rays, it seems that the team is in a downward spiral as they
recently lost both their longtime GM, as well as their beloved
manager, Joe Maddon. This double whammy really caught Rays
fans off guard as they expected it to be an offseason of adding free

agents, not dismantling the backbone of the team. Now with this
current state of uncertainty surrounding the team,
fans don’t know if they should give up on the Rays
or if a new manager/GM combo will ever be as successful as Andrew Friedman and
Joe Maddon ever were.
Moving on to the Buccaneers, the outlook is not much better for them. The Bucs
have stumbled out of the gate so far and only have 1 win in the first six weeks of the
regular season. What makes this even more troubling, is that the expectations were
high this year with a new coach, new QB, and some nice free agent acquisitions.
While all is not lost for the Bucs, you would almost rather have them tank this season
so that they could put themselves in position to draft one of the elite quarterbacks
in next year’s draft. For now, we’ll just have to see if the Bucs can rebound in the
second half of the season and at least build some momentum for the 2015 season.
Now there is one team giving Tampa Bay sports fans a glimmer of hope, the
Lightning. This year the Lightning are expected to reach the playoffs for the second
year in a row, and they may even make a deep run at The Stanley Cup. In addition to
having a competitive team, the Lightning have continued to improve both the arena
and fan experience, which bodes well for the team’s future. I’d expect this trend to
continue as long as Jeff Vinik owns the team.
Overall sports fans in the Bay Area should keep their heads up, as it really can’t get
much worse than it already is. There is also hope that some of the Bucs and Rays
youngsters will blossom in the near future, restoring Tampa Bay to the respectable
sports town that it once was in the mid/late 2000’s.

He first picked up a plastic golf club when was three years old. Now he plays with
real clubs as an eleventh grader at Shorecrest Preparatory School. Recently, for
his golf accomplishments, Greyson Porter has received a scholarship from Florida
State University in Tallahassee. A rundown of his accomplishments would include
winning the Florida Junior Tour Championship last December at TPC Sawgrass in
a 4 way playoff. He just won Regional’s

Rock It RED! St. Pete will commemorate World AIDS Day on December 1
Beginning on November 30th, Rock it Red! St. Pete will present a public arts installation and other activities along
Central Avenue, and on buildings and monuments through the city. Rock it RED! St. Pete will serve as a memorial to
those who passed from HIV and AIDS related illnesses, and build awareness of the continued presence and need for
HIV/AIDS testing and treatment.
Planned activities include:

Wrapping 170 trees along Central Avenue from 16th to 31st streets with red fabric for three days; creating a
conceptual 1.25 mile-long RED Ribbon in honor of World AIDS Day.
On at least 50 of the 170 trees, visitors will be able to add names, messages or attach small pictures to the wraps

The wraps will honor bay area and Florida loved ones remembered on the AIDS Quilt.
•
Partners throughout St. Petersburg will turn their structures RED through lighting, balloons, streamers, or other
means for the night on December 1.
•
A candlelight vigil and remembrance program beginning at 7 p.m. will be held at the LGBT Welcome Center,
2227 Central Ave. on December 1.

While the mile-long RED Ribbon will be a temporary art installation, it shall produce a piece of communitycreated folk art as 50 sections where memorials have been left will later be laced together producing an “AIDS Wall of
Remembrance.”
Founder, artist, and organizer Jim Buresch states, “I still have a voice that I want heard, a vision realized and instead of going insane in the politics of HIV, I
decided to use extremely large art installations as my method of activism. I don’t know if you classify it as conceptual or earth, it’s just my voice to me. Art
has led many social awakenings, in fact, World AIDS Day started out as “A Day without Art.”
“It is estimated that nearly one percent of Americans are HIV positive, however nearly a quarter of them are not even aware that they carry the virus. Early
detection is essential to slowing the potential development of AIDS and AIDS related illness.”
St. Petersburg Arts Alliance is serving as the umbrella organization, collaborating with the St. Petersburg LGBT Welcome Center, the Grand Central District
Association, and the United Nations Association – United States of America (UNA-USA) Tampa Bay Chapter.

Dear EarthTalk: A friend of mine recently stopped using skin and beauty products with parabens in them.
What are parabens and should we all be avoiding them? -- Betsy Johnson, Port Chester, NY
First commercialized in the 1950s, parabens are a group of synthetic
compounds commonly used as preservatives in a wide range
of health, beauty and personal care products. If the product you
are using contains methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben,
butylparaben and isobutylparaben, it has parabens.
These ingredients are added to deodorants, toothpastes, shampoos, conditioners, body lotions and makeups,
among other products, to stop the growth of fungus, bacteria and other potentially damaging microbes.
Researchers have also found that some 90 percent of typical grocery items contain measurable amounts of
parabens, which is why even those who steer clear of potentially harmful personal care products also carry
parabens around in their bloodstreams.
What worries public health advocates is that while individual products may contain limited amounts of parabens within safe limits set by the U.S. Food &
Drug Administration (FDA), cumulative exposure to the chemicals from several different products could be overloading our bodies and contributing to a wide
range of health problems. “Of greatest concern is that parabens are known to disrupt hormone function, an effect that is linked to increased risk of breast cancer
and reproductive toxicity,” reports the non-profit Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC). “Parabens mimic estrogen by binding to estrogen receptors on cells.”
Research has shown that the perceived influx of estrogen beyond normal levels can in some cases trigger reactions such as increasing breast cell division and
the growth of tumors.
CSC cites a 2004 British study that detected traces of five parabens in the breast tumors of 19 out of 20 women studied. “This small study does not prove a causal
relationship between parabens and breast cancer, but it
is important because it detected the presence of intact
parabens—unaltered by the body’s metabolism—which
is an indication of the chemical’s ability to penetrate
skin and remain in breast tissue.” According to the
group, a more recent study found higher levels of one
paraben, n-propylparaben, in the axilla quadrant of the
breast where the highest proportion of breast tumors is
found. CSC reports that parabens have also been linked
to reproductive, immunological, neurological and skin
irritation problems.
Health advocates are pressuring the FDA to ban
parabens in products sold in the U.S.—like the European
Union did in 2012—but concerned consumers must
take matters into their own hands for now by reading
product labels and avoiding products with parabens.
“Many natural and organic cosmetics manufacturers
have found effective alternatives to parabens to prevent
microbial growth in personal care products,” reports
CSC. “Some companies have created preservative-free
products that have shorter shelf lives than conventional
products (six months to a year), but if used daily are
likely to be used up before they expire.” Readers can
check out Breast Cancer Action’s list of over 100
cosmetics and personal care product makers committed
to avoiding parabens in their products. Also, see if
your favorite products contain parabens or other risky
ingredients via Environmental Working Group’s free
online “Skin Deep” database.
