Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica
*****************************************************************************************
Today would have been the Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time but instead, we celebrate the
Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome, where the Popes resided for over 1000 years.
The Gospel story for today is of the cleansing of the Temple, which is found in all four Gospels. In
Matthew, Mark, and Luke, Jesus is upset with the deceitful practices of the vendors and expels them for that
reason. But in John, Jesus' authority is contrasted with the authority of the Temple cult and is a criticism of the
cult itself.
The story is composed of two parts, Jesus' action in the Temple and Jesus' predictions about the
Temple's destruction. The time of year is the sacred feast of Passover. If the many pilgrims to Jerusalem during
Passover were to have animals for the sacrificial rituals of the feast, it was necessary to sell cattle in the
Temple and to change the unclean Roman money. By denouncing this, Jesus is cutting to the core of the
Temple cult.
The story is really about Jesus' fate, not the Temple's fate, revealing that Jesus, not the Temple, is the
locus of God's presence on earth. As they often do in John, the Jews misunderstand Jesus' words. This gives
John the chance to explicitly state his point. Although this is the beginning of his ministry, Jesus is already
speaking of his coming death and Resurrection.
John intentionally integrates a post-Resurrection perspective into the Gospel narrative. The statement
that concludes this passage uses the fact of the Resurrection to prove the point of Jesus' words. Believers need
to remember the words and actions of Jesus and claim them as affirmations of the truths of their faith.
Christians sometimes point to Jesus' anger in this passage as a way to point out Jesus' humanity. But
this would miss the powerful point of the entire Gospel, that the Word became flesh. The point is not that
Jesus' anger proves he is human. It is that a human being, in his words and actions, can claim the authority of
God.

I would like to say thank you for all in the parish who prayed and fasted with us for this 40 days
for life. As this 40 Days for Life campaign comes to an end, we have reports of
546 babies saved from abortion – that we know of!
And keep in mind that these aren’t just numbers.
That’s 546 individual human beings … and their moms … and their dads … and
grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins. Each time a mother says “yes” to
life, the impact is profound. God worked through so many faithful people during this
campaign and that work goes on far beyond Day 40.
Thank you to Annunciation for being part of this effort.

Food Pantry is always in need of
food items. Bags are in the back of
the church please take one home and
bring it back next week. The item of
need for November is meat (ham,
spam stews etc.) Thank you to all
who donated the mashed potatoes we
went above and beyond our goal.
All items are appreciated.
Week 1
Is it time to step on the proverbial scale?
A scale measures how much a person
weighs at snap shot moment in time.
But, who cares? Who cares unless
considering a couple of other, really
important questions like what is the base
line, where was the starting point, is
there an ideal, and is there a goal?
For instance, if one has suffered a great
deprivation of nutrition due to illness,
then it will take that person a certain
amount of time and rest to gain back
weight and become strong enough to
continue on working and serving his or
her particular vocation in life. In another instance,
one who is well and yet takes in the same amount of
nutrition and rest as the person recovering from
illness, that person will likely become burdened by
extra weight and perhaps become sluggish at his or
her calling in life.
It is my hope that the above example shows that
food/money/recreation is, in and of itself, neutral –
it is who these things are consumed by and the state
of that person (or organization) that actually matters
much, much more. A person who has gone through
spiritual deprivation is certainly needier than one
who is in a state of spiritual elation or fullness. I
hope it is obvious to all reading that we all move
back and forth between periods of strength and
weakness, between periods of fluid movement
through grace and spells of spiritual dryness.

idea if you are a participating Catholic or not, so please
register and if you can not afford to give monetarily
please put a prayer card in the offertory so that we
