STEAM STERILIZATION WITH
OMNIVORE 500
THE FOLLOWING ARE THE TECHNICAL FEATURES OF THE OMNIVORE 500 FOR PROCESS AND SAFETY:
OMNIVORE is an advanced solution to perform a safe biomedical treatment
which reduces risks, volume and weights (to a certain extent) and disposal
cost. It carries out automated actions to sterilize infectious hospital waste
incl. a pretreatment (multiple vacuum, conditioning, shredding) and a post
treatment cycle (drying)! SECONDLY the machine provides a
decontamination cycle designed to decontaminate the internal parts (incl.
shredder) of the equipment, which during normal use, come into contact with
the processed waste in order to render these parts safe to handle for
maintenance and repairs. A validated process is used to render a product
free from viable micro organisms. The sterilizing agent is saturated steam
heat to inactivate hazardous microorganisms. The saturated steam or
moisture is used in the form of steam or liquid water, both of which are
equally effective in the inactivation of micro-organisms.
No Chemicals are used.
The hospital waste is exposed to internally/externally generated steam that
is admitted into the sterilization vessel (autoclave approx. 210L). Moisture is
also generated from water, that is already present in the waste itself, i.e.
bottles of growth media from the laboratory by heating the water with steam.
In the OMNIVORE 500 it is secured by the method, that both heat and
moisture are present on the surfaces to be decontaminated. In the event that
some surfaces are not readily exposed to the moist heat, i.e. in tubes or
injection needles we have used additional means to make the surfaces
accessible to the moist heat. The techniques used are shredding the waste
and removing the air by vaccuum, to guarantee an effective sterilizing cycle.
The time and temperature combinations specified for an acceptable
disinfection and sterilizing process are valid for saturated moisture and
steam as the sterilizing agent and the measured temperature is
corresponding to the theoretical steam temperature.
IN THE EVENT THOSE CRITERIAS ARE NOT MET, THE MACHINE WILL
AUTOMATICALLY REPEAT THE PROCESS OR IN CASE OF A
LEAKAGE WILL INFORM THE RESPONSIBLE PERSON AND STOP THE
PROCESS.
The information system will depict/display the exact cause via
display/modem/alarm and print out.
The sterilizing process includes the following stages:
• Shredding of the waste and air removal (shredding with a max. torque of
3000Nm and knives of about 190 mm dia)
• Shredding with 8 kWh approx.
• Wetting and heating with 2 x 20 kWh (alternatively 3 x 20 kWh) for a fast
cycle (< than 50 mins., even with a higher liquid content)
• Sterilizing process with a plateau phase 10 or 20 mins at 135°C, 3,5 bar
pressure
• Drying with a very strong vacuum pump
The sterilizing process has got clear start and end points and is conducted at
a single temperature for a certain period (PLATEAU PHASE). Shredding is
an effective way of bringing moist heat into contact with all of the surfaces of
the waste materials. It also shreds sharps to as size which can be
determined by the client by varying the size of the shredder teeth (option).
Moreover shredding decreases the volume of bulky waste up to 80% and
renders it absolutely unrecognizable to a approx. 1,2 cm size with a high
torque of about 3000 Nm.
Schredders are designed to reduce the size of the items in the waste to
particles of a specified size range which is chosen to allow the penetration of
the moist heat to the surfaces to be sterilized. The OMNIVORE 500
sterilization unit also includes the possibility of sterilizing the shredder during
a routine cycle or, the sterilization of the shredder before maintenance
or repair-/mal function.
The lid, the filling funnel and the autoclave are hermetically closed when the
shredder is in operation. Overpressure release vents are fitted with adequate
air filters. The unit is designed to sterilize all possible items present in
infectious hospital waste, including tubes, syringes, needles, suction bottles
and growth media from the laboratory. It also sterilizes all other materials
such as glass, fabrics, linen, woven-non-woven materials, paper, towels,
certain quantities of diapers, blood
bags, etc. Air removal allows for the rapid and even penetration of moist
heat in porous and hollow materials.
OMNIVORE 500 uses a fractionated vacuum which is absolutely necessary
to remove air from hollow devices. All processes are described in DIN
58949-3 and validated by independent organizations recommended by the
RKI-Institute, Berlin. All materials and substances emitted from the unit
during or at the end of the process are sterilized.
All air is filtered through special 0,2 micron filters before venting. It prevents
the uncontrolled emission of fumes, aerosols and vapours hermetically
sealed, operating at underpressure. Waste water is collected, thermally
treated (135 °C) and sterilized. The water will only be released after meeting
the set parameters.
SAFETY
1. All sterilizing processes are reproducible.
2. Only one level of the program is available to the worker at the unit.
3. The Omnivore 500 provides a self-decontamination cycle which can be
set automatically or manually in case of failure.
4. The efficacy of the self decontamination process is at least equal to a
disinfection process of 15 mins. at 105 °C.
5. The machine automatically performs a leakage test before the new cycle
starts.
6. Manual adjustments of the parameters of the unit are only possible by
authorized persons using special keys/tools/administrator rights.
7. The unit has got min. 2 pressure transducers.
8. The unit is fitted with 2 independent temperature measurement systems.
They do not deviate more than 1°C from the given sterilizing
temperature.
9. The pressure can be easily monitored and recorded. The pressure
measurement system does not deviate more than 4kPA from the
pressure of the sterilizing temperature.
10. Recorded data parameters are presented as a graph. The results are
sufficient to read all data with no need of additional optical enhancement
systems or measuring systems. The 10" display displays all data in realtime. All recorded process data are indicated to the operator during the
process.
11. The OMNIVORE 500 is fitted with a fault indication system. In the event
of a fault, the cycle will be terminated and the cause indicated to the
operator during the process. The meaning of the indications are proven
to be clear to almost all operators. Means are provided to bring the
process towards a safe situation to allow for removal of the waste. It is
possible to terminate the process manually at any time, the termination is
recorded by the process recorder. It is presumed that the waste is still
contaminated and must be handled as such. The unit also provides an
emergency program in the event, that the shredders stops or similar.
The doors cannot be opened until released with the emergency program.
12. OMNIVORE 500, a double door sterilizing unit with an interlock system
that prevents, that the unloading door can only be opened at the end of a
successfully completed process.
13. All necessary certificates and homologations are available on request,
such as
• ISO 9001-2008
• CE includes DIN EN ISO TR 14121-1
• ISO DIN EN TS 17665(13)
• DIN EN 285 and EN 556-1,
• DIN EN ISO 11138-3
• TÜV certificates for the vessel
14. Warranty is 13 months from the shipping date(B/L date).
15. The OMNIVORE 500 has got a very low foot print to the environment. It
does not emit any dangerous materials such as heavy metals, ozone,
PCB, dioxin, furans or other dangerous chemicals or materials. It is
discharging water only with a max. temperature of 65°C.
With this machine you can continuously treat infectious waste up to
23 hours a day, resulting in a treatment volume of max. 1100 kgs per
working day.
