Vail Resorts launches plan to make skiing and boarding more accesible to women BROOMFIELD, Colo. Despite making up over half the population of the United States, women only make up 40 percent of alpine skiers and only 32 percent of snowboarders according to participation data from SnowSports IndustriesAmerica (SIA). Vail Resorts, the world’s leading mountain resort operator, has announced a new company initiative to increase women’s participation in skiing and snowboarding. “Vail Resorts’ mission is to provide an experience of a lifetime. We can only do this by understanding and meeting the needs of our guests. “There is clearly an opportunity to understand what our women guests need to increase their participation in snow sports,” said Kirsten Lynch, executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Vail Resorts. “We want to make the ski experience more accessible to all women, and then empower them to make time for themselves to have the ski experience they desire.” Over the course of the 2013-14 ski season, Vail Resorts conducted research with female guests, at resorts and online, to better understand the barriers to the ski experience for women. Common themes included being overwhelmed by the process and having their hands full managing the experience for the other members of their group/family. “We are listening to the voice of our guests,” said Lynch. “We had intimate conversations with women from all over the U.S., Mexico and Brazil, and we’re customizing programs to meet their needs.” The women surveyed expressed some trepidation around ski school – feelings of being overwhelmed by the logistics of the experience, being out of place either socially or by ability level, and needing to justify the cost for lessons for themselves. Comments included: “A ski class where I felt comfortable would affect my decision a ton. I’d be pumped to learn with others like me,” said a woman from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. A woman from Dallas, added, “All-female adult classes would really encourage me to take more lessons. I would LOVE that.” The women also commented on their desire to either have ski lessons that better accommodated getting their children into their lessons, or lessons which included their children. Comments like these led the Vail Resorts to create a number of new programs and products, available for the 2014-15 winter ski and ride season. Vail Resorts’ Ski & Ride Schools will offer the Women’s Ultimate 4, a lesson for women where they can join fellow women and a female coach to learn or brush up on skiing in a small-group setting, from the foundation-building basics of a “first-timer” class (open to all), to navigating the easiest greens, to sharing tactics and camaraderie on mountain green and blue runs. Wo m e n ’s U l t i m a t e 4 lessons will be offered at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone in Colorado, Park City and Canyons in Utah, and Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood at Lake Tahoe. The project began in late October. More than 5,000 dead or diseased trees will be removed from Red Dog region of the lower mountain in an effort to improve the natural habitat, reduce the risk of wildfire, and provide unprecedented access to tree skiing and riding in the targeted area. As a result of the project, skiers and riders can expect nearly 100 acres of enhanced skiable terrain this season in the Red Dog region. The terrain, rated upperintermediate to expert, will include three newly designated glade areas - Red Dog Glades, Paris Glades and Heidi’s Glades - as well as a new connector trail on Champs Elysees that will eliminate the current lengthy traverse. “This effort will result in the creation of new, gladed tree skiing for our guests, and will ultimately feel like a terrain expansion due to the new access,” said Mike Livak, executive vice president of Squaw Valley / Alpine Meadows. This part of the Red Dog terrain has previously been inaccessible, or extremely limited, due to a dense population of standing and fallen trees on the forest floor, eliminating the ability for skiers and riders to negotiate the terrain safely. About the Project Squaw Valley is conducting the forest thinning project to improve forest health and preserve the area’s incredible natural resources for the local community and visitors to enjoy. Lower-level vegetation that could potentially serve as fire fuel will be removed from the East end of the ski resort from Red Dog Face to Poulsen’s Gully. “The current drought and the King Fire bring into sharp focus the issue of forest health and how it affects our community right here in Squaw. Thinning provides valuable benefit by effectively utilizing the available water for the most viable trees, and the removal of dead or diseased trees dramatically reduces the risk of fire. While this work is expensive for private landowners, our community will benefit from Squaw’s investment in fuels reduction and forest health and I commend the company for doing the right thing,” said Peter Bansen, Squaw Valley fire chief. Squaw Valley will conduct the project by lifting the dead and diseased trees from the targeted area via helicopter; this will eliminate the need to skid or drag the fallen trees along the ground in sensitive areas, thus minimizing adverse environmental impacts. Most of the trees will be processed for timber, and the remaining materials will be chipped for future use, allowing Squaw to ensure that all forest materials harvested will not be wasted. “Our goal is to return the forested areas in the Red Dog region back to a more natural and healthy state by removing the potentially dangerous overgrowth and deadfall,” said Livak. “Although this project is costly, it’s worth the investment to improve the environment while also improving skiing and riding at the resort.” The newly enhanced terrain is expected to be open for the 2014-15 winter season. Squaw Valley is scheduled to open for skiing and riding Wednesday, Nov. 26. EpicMix at Heavenly, Kirkwood, Northstar LAKE TAHOE, Calif. Vail Resorts has re-imagined how skiers and snowboarders will maximize their time on the mountain this winter, with the fifth generation of its awardwinning, multi-channel app, EpicMix.
