Bi-Monthly Portage County 4-H Newsletter
October / November 2014
Dear 4-H Families and Friends:
Farm Technology Days: Thank you for all the help we had at the Portage County Farm
Technology Days Youth Tent. It was a very busy tent, well attended by the
youth who came to FTD. I heard many comments from parents and
grandparents that it was hard to get their kids to leave the Youth Tent area
because there were so many fun things to do.
The benches that the 4-H clubs and FFA built were a great addition to the Youth
Tent area as well. Did you see them at the Rosholt fairgrounds also? They will
be put to good use for many years to come.

at FTD.
4-H Online Re-Enrollments: If you haven’t re-enrolled yet, now is the time to
do it! It’s the same procedure that you used to enroll. Go to http://
wi.4honline.com. Log in with your family email and password. On the family
home screen, click on the orange button labeled Continue to Family. Click on
Edit next to the family member you wish to re-enroll. Make any changes
needed and click on the Continue button at the bottom of the screen before
going on to the next screen so that your changes are saved.
Fairbook Revision Meeting: October 13th at 7:00
pm in Room 2 (1st floor) of the Courthouse Annex
Building. Bring your ideas on changes you would like
to see in the next fairbook. If you are unable to attend the meeting but
have some changes, please email them to [email protected]. The
fairbook is used for four year so if you have changes you won’t want to
miss this opportunity to present them.
Here’s to the beginning of another great 4-H year! Let’s all be the “best that
we can be!”

4-H Enrollment Policy
The Wisconsin 4-H year is defined as October 1 through
September 30 for the purpose of definition in this policy.
According to the state 4-H Policy Committee, the following
Wisconsin 4-H membership policy is effective as of
October 1, 2002.
We would like to encourage every 4-H member, family
and club to get involved in promoting your 4-H program.
What better people to promote a program than those who
benefit from it. Here are just a few ideas for promoting 4H:
 Contact a local radio station to air public service
announcements on 4-H. Have the youth write the
announcements and present them.
 Set up a 4-H display or posters in area businesses,
public places or schools during the week or month.
 Host a special event and invite the general public to
show them what 4-H is all about. Publicize your
event in various ways—posters, radio, newspaper
and/or personal invitations.
 Have everyone in your club wear their 4-H club tshirts to school on a specific day.
Each club that sets up a 4-H promotion display for up to a
week or more than two hours anytime during the 4-H
year will receive $20 from the Portage County 4-H
Leaders Association. To receive the $20, submit a
photograph of your display with the following
information: 1)When and where the display was set up.
2)How long the display was set up. 3)Did anyone man
the display?
Contact the Extension Office for eye-catching
brochures and bookmarks that can be used for any 4H promotional event.

FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES
16-Month BARN Calendars
September 2014-December 2015
The Portage County Farm
Technology Days Family
Living Committee produced
and sold barn calendars as
a fundraiser. There are still
a number of calendars left.
Buy one for yourself or buy
several for gifts. People
enjoy the barn photos and
the captions on each page. I’ve also heard the
comment that the numbers on the calendar are big
enough to see across the room.
They are the perfect gift for anyone who loves barns or
rural landscapes.
Cost:
$12—1 calendar
$10—2 or more calendars
Club Fundraiser Option:
Clubs can purchase a box of 50 calendars for $200.
That’s a cost of $4 per calendar. The clubs can then
sell the calendars for no less than $10 per calendar—
making $6 profit per calendar or $300 profit on the box.
Discuss this at your next meeting to decide if this is
something your would like to do. Just before the end
of the year and the holidays could be the perfect time for
this fundraiser.
If interested, call or stop at the Extension Office and pick
up a box.
Thank You Rosholt Fair Volunteers
Thank you to everyone who helped at the Rosholt
Fair Clean Up Day. It was wonderful to have so
much help!!!
Thank you to all the leaders, parents, community
members, Rosholt Fair Board members, RSVP
Volunteers who watched the exhibit building, and fair

the job so much easier! There was much help this
year and it was greatly appreciated. Also to Lee
Miller for being the auctioneer for the cake auction.
The volunteer spirit is alive and well in Portage
County. It is because of all of your support that the

COMMUNITY SERVICE
4-H Centennial Flowerbed
at Rosholt Fair Park
Hopefully you got a chance to see the 4H Centennial Flowerbed at Rosholt Fair
Park. Seven youth, along with the help
of adults, planted the 4-H Centennial
Flowerbed, which graced Rosholt Fair
Park, just in time for the fair.
Tracy Glodowski, Dennis Kurszewski
and Sherry Wanta took on the project
which started a few months ago.
Tracy’s father, Gary Napiwocki
(grandfather to three 4-H youth)
refurbished and donated the antique
spreader. Dennis and his brother, Joe,
placed the boulders to outline the
flowerbed. They also added soil for a
good planting depth. Gary then built the
fence to outline the back border. Once
the sign was in place (made by Dennis)
they were ready to plant.
On the very rainy evening of August
25th, seven 4-H youth, along with the
help of adults, planted flowers
purchased by Sherry Wanta. The
flowerbed was mulched with bark made
possible by a donation from a local
Rosholt resident, Tom Ritcher. Green
Meadow Turf (Tom & Kim Glodowski)
donated the sod in front of the display.
The time, talent and donations of many
helped make this unique display
possible. The Rosholt Pioneers 4-H
Club will maintain the display for years
to come.
