Beef & Egg Cookery
It’s time to get your sewing
machines out! After several
requests, we have moved a
few contests to earlier in the
year. The Sew With Cotton
and Fashion Revue will be
held on Saturday, November
22nd at 10:00 am. Garments
will be due to the Extension
Office by 4:30pm on Friday,
November 14th.
Earlier, Saturday, November
22nd at 8:00am, we will have
our Parish Beef & Egg Cookery Contests. The remaining
cookery contests will be
scheduled for a time during
Spring of 2009. The Beef &
Egg Categories will only be
competed on at this time.
This gives you a chance to
enter more dishes and not
have to cook so much the
night before! So start thinking about what to make!
Age Groups: Grades 4-6;
Grades 7-8; Grades 9-12.
Divisions: Apron, Boxer
Shorts or Sleepwear, Skirt,
Casual Outfit, Special Occasion Outfit, Other (quilts,
purses, pillow cases, dog
clothing, etc.)

You may enter one dish in
each of the five categories:
Beef—Quick & Easy, OneDish Meal; Egg—Main Dish,
Appetizer/Salad, or Dessert.

Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest! Bring your pumpkin, a
pattern, and your carving
tools, and you will be all set
for this year’s contest!

SPOOOKY FUN—It’s all in
store for you at this year’s
Pumpkin Carving Contest!
We’ll be waiting for you at
the Many Fairgrounds at
6:00pm on Monday, October
27th! You can even wear
your costumes! You will be
the judge for our scariest

State Fair: Quiz Bowl & Talent Show—October 25th
Quiz Bowl—Livestock or Nutrition
Get your teams together now to be in
this year’s State Fair Quiz Bowls! Nutrition Team and Livestock Teams will
both compete after the Talent Show on
the afternoon of October 25th at the
State Fairgrounds in Shreveport, LA.
State winning team receives a trophy a
$75. The second place team receives a
trophy and $25. Team members receive
ribbons, and third place receives a trophy and ribbons.
Livestock Quiz Bowl
Teams of 3-5 members are welcome, and
there will be one division for all ages.
Matches will last until one team reaches
200 points, and the contest will be set
up in tournament-style elimination.
Questions from the Quiz Bowl will come
from 4-H Project Books and other references specified for study by Extension Nutrition Specialists. Teams must

Talent Show
If you placed first in the Sabine Parish
Fair’s Talent Show, you are eligible to
attend the State Fair’s Talent Show.
Entries must be turned in at the Sabine
Parish Extension Office no later than
10:00 am October 9th with contestants’
names, addresses, phone numbers, and
their entry.

Officer Training for All School 4-H Club Officers
Monday, November 3rd at 6pm
Learn how to fulfill your responsibilities
to your club as a 2008-2009 club officer. What does a Parliamentarian do?

be your first time as an officer, and we
want you to be prepared and ready to

National 4-H Week: “Keeping It Green!”
October 5-11, 2008
4-H’ers from across the nation will be
“Keeping It Green” as they celebrate
2008 National 4-H Week by raising
awareness about environmental issues
and initiating environmental projects
that make a positive difference in their
communities.
Throughout National 4-H Week and the
year, 4-H’ers solve problems in their
communities, raise awareness about environmental issues, and make a difference for their futures in the spirit of 4H’s vision to create a world in which
youth and adults learn, grow, and work
together as catalysts for positive
change.
Ideas to Promote 4-H
•
Cute Candies: “We’re Bursting w/
Fun!” Use a Starburst.
•
Put up posters: “Keep it Green &
Clean.”
•
Plant a 4-H Flower Box at your
school.
•
Host a school clean up day and
provide snacks.

State Record Book Wins Blue Ribbons
Michaela Powell
Congratulations to Michaela Powell, who
entered the State Record Book Contest.
Michaela is a 9th grader at Belmont
University Christian Academy and is a
member of the Sabine Parish Junior
Leader Club.
She entered the Good Provider Contest
and was the First Alternate for the New
Orleans trip in November.
She also entered her Record Book in the
Dog Care Project Area and the Livestock Project Area, where she received
Blue Ribbons in both of those contests.
Entering your Record Books in the State
Records Contests can bring forth lots of
trips, prizes, money, savings bonds, and
ribbons!
You work hard already on your books,
