I
From the Pastor’s Desk
n the fall of 1999, the Franciscan Provincial, Fr. Finian,
gave me the opportunity to spend a semester at the Antonianum in Rome taking courses in Franciscan Studies.
I had just finished novi ate and, having already been
ordained a priest for over twenty years, the province was not
quite sure what to do with me, so this opportunity presented
itself, and I warmly accepted the invita on.
The Antonianum is the Franciscan University in Rome
located down the street from the Basilica of St. John Lateran.
Many mes I stopped into this magnificent church that is the
Cathedral Church of Rome. St. John’s has served the Church
of Rome in this capacity since the 4th century. Many think
that the Basilica of St. Peter’s in the Va can is the primary
church of Rome, but it is properly referred to as the burial
place of St. Peter and as the “papal chapel.” The cathedral of

Rome is where the “chair” of the Bishop is located. Since the
bishop of Rome is also the pope, St. John’s—not St. Peter’s, is
the pope’s church. A basilica is a church specially-designated
by the Pope, which has special significance when the Holy
Father may visit or as a place of pilgrimage. There are over
1,500 designated basilicas in the world.
Today the universal Church celebrates the dedica on of
the Basilica Cathedral of St. John Lateran. It is the Mother
Church for Roman Catholics, since it is the Cathedral of the
Church of Rome to which all Churches throughout the world
are related. Prior to the early 14th century, the papacy
resided at the Church of St. John Lateran. It was a er the
Avignon exile in the late 14th century that the papacy took up
residence at what is known today as the Va can City.

Regular Giving (Offertory)
St. John Lateran also has a significant place in the history
of the Franciscan Order. A er St. Francis had gathered some
followers, they traveled to Rome from Assisi to request an
audience with Pope Nicolas III. They asked him to recognize
the rule formulated by St. Francis as a way of life. The Pope
denied their request.

Shortly a er this, in 1207, Pope Innocent III, who reigned
from the Lateran Palace next door to the Cathedral of St. John
Lateran, had a dream that the Church of St. John was falling
over. In the dream, a li le man held the church up, keeping
it from collapsing. Pope Innocent was alarmed by this dream,
as dreams had a great deal of significance in the imagina on
of the people at the me. In fact, the Church at that me was
crumbling around the papacy. As Pope Innocent reflected on
his dream, he remembered the visit of Francis and his companions and realized that Brother Francis was the li le man in
the dream, and that he needed to take heed and give Francis
and his companions a chance, so he gave a verbal sanc on to
the rule submi ed by Francis, and granted him and his companions the privilege to preach repentance everywhere.

If today you visit Rome and journey to the Basilica of
St. John Lateran, you will see a large bronze sculpture in the
park across from the church. The statue depicts St. Francis
with his arms raised and facing the basilica, as if holding up
the church/Church. This is a constant reminder that Francis
and his followers had, and con nue to have, an important
role in maintaining the integrity of the church and the Church.
It is interes ng to note that the Order of Friars Minor supply
the confessors for the Basilica of St. John Lateran. Even today,
in a very prac cal way, the friars are restoring the “Church” to
holiness and integrity in its rela onship with God.

radi onally, November is the
month when the Church honors
our beloved dead. Every November
at St. Francis we gather the names of
those who have died during the past
year and inscribe them in our Parish Book of Remembrance,
which is then placed at the font. On the pages provided, you
are invited to add the names of loved ones who have died.
Our Book of Remembrance will be displayed in the church
throughout November.

Requesting a Communion Visit
ur 15 newly-trained Communion
Visita on Ministers have joined those
who were already a part of this wonderful
ministry. All are available to take communion to those who are homebound, as well
as to those who are hospitalized, or who
are in a care facility. To be able to embrace those outside of
the walls of our church, to be able to bring Communion to
those who cannot be with us to share in the Eucharist, is truly
part of God’s grace.
It may take a li le while for us to sort through the cards
and to follow up with you, but you will hear from a volunteer or member of the parish staff within the next couple of
weeks. That is our commitment to you!

A New Option During Communion
B
ishop Soto has approved Fr. Ken’s
request, on a trial basis, to offer mustum at Communion me for those unable to consume alcohol. This will be a new
prac ce in the Diocese of Sacramento. Mustum is grape juice that contains no addi ves,
and in which the fermenta on process has been suspended.
It is available from only two sources in the United States.
If you wish to receive the Blood of Christ in the form of
mustum, please let Fr. Ken know. Because it is being offered
on a trial basis, we need to keep count of how many people
ask for this op on, and we also need to know so that we can
prepare enough for all those who wish to receive in this way.
The Blessed Sacrament in the form of mustum will be offered
in one cup next to the minister serving the low-gluten hosts at
the foot of the pillar just inside the K St. transept. As with the
minister offering the low-gluten hosts, this minister can be
iden fied by a nametag, “Mustum.”
