St. Francis of Assisi Parish November 9, 2014 • The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica ...................................................................................... You are Invited to attend the Dedication of our New Altar at the Noon Mass with Bishop Soto Sunday, November 23, 2014 I From the Pastor’s Desk n the fall of 1999, the Franciscan Provincial, Fr. Finian, gave me the opportunity to spend a semester at the Antonianum in Rome taking courses in Franciscan Studies. I had just finished novi ate and, having already been ordained a priest for over twenty years, the province was not quite sure what to do with me, so this opportunity presented itself, and I warmly accepted the invita on. The Antonianum is the Franciscan University in Rome located down the street from the Basilica of St. John Lateran. Many mes I stopped into this magnificent church that is the Cathedral Church of Rome. St. John’s has served the Church of Rome in this capacity since the 4th century. Many think that the Basilica of St. Peter’s in the Va can is the primary church of Rome, but it is properly referred to as the burial place of St. Peter and as the “papal chapel.” The cathedral of WEEKEND MASSES Saturday Vigil 5:15pm Sunday 7:30am, 9:30am, Noon WEEKDAY MASSES (in St. Clare Chapel) 12:10pm Rome is where the “chair” of the Bishop is located. Since the bishop of Rome is also the pope, St. John’s—not St. Peter’s, is the pope’s church. A basilica is a church specially-designated by the Pope, which has special significance when the Holy Father may visit or as a place of pilgrimage. There are over 1,500 designated basilicas in the world. Today the universal Church celebrates the dedica on of the Basilica Cathedral of St. John Lateran. It is the Mother Church for Roman Catholics, since it is the Cathedral of the Church of Rome to which all Churches throughout the world are related. Prior to the early 14th century, the papacy resided at the Church of St. John Lateran. It was a er the Avignon exile in the late 14th century that the papacy took up residence at what is known today as the Va can City. In the dream, a li le man held the church up, keeping it from collapsing. Pope Innocent was alarmed by this dream, as dreams had a great deal of significance in the imagina on of the people at the me. In fact, the Church at that me was crumbling around the papacy. As Pope Innocent reflected on his dream, he remembered the visit of Francis and his companions and realized that Brother Francis was the li le man in the dream, and that he needed to take heed and give Francis and his companions a chance, so he gave a verbal sanc on to the rule submi ed by Francis, and granted him and his companions the privilege to preach repentance everywhere. Ken’s request, on a trial basis, to offer mustum at Communion me for those unable to consume alcohol. This will be a new prac ce in the Diocese of Sacramento. Mustum is grape juice that contains no addi ves, and in which the fermenta on process has been suspended. It is available from only two sources in the United States. If you wish to receive the Blood of Christ in the form of mustum, please let Fr. Ken know. Because it is being offered on a trial basis, we need to keep count of how many people ask for this op on, and we also need to know so that we can prepare enough for all those who wish to receive in this way. The Blessed Sacrament in the form of mustum will be offered in one cup next to the minister serving the low-gluten hosts at the foot of the pillar just inside the K St. transept. As with the minister offering the low-gluten hosts, this minister can be iden fied by a nametag, “Mustum.” WĊđĈĔĒĊ NĊĜ PĆėĎĘčĎĔēĊėĘ Jessica and Michael Clark and daughter Grace and son Jonah Francie Dillon and daughters Erin and Lindsey Samson Elsbernd and Michael Strabala Ruben and Shawna Hernandez and sons Jus n, Joshua, and Jonathan Kathryn Nelson 5 It is also important for all Catholics to understand “that the Catholic faith teaches that Christ, whole and en re, and the true Sacrament, is received even under only one species” (General Instruc on of the Roman Missal 282; cf Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1390).
