St. Francis of Assisi Parish April 12, 2015 • Second Sunday of Easter • Divine Mercy Sunday ...................................................................................... I From the Pastor’s Desk wish to express my gra tude and sincere thanks to the staff and many volunteers who planned and executed the Lenten and Holy Week events and liturgies. Many parishioners and visitors told me that they were moved by the prayerfulness of each liturgy during Holy Week. I am also most apprecia ve of the staff and volunteers who were involved in preparing those who were bap zed or welcomed into our Church community through the Sacraments of Ini a on. It is a tribute to the en re parish community that 23 persons were fully welcomed into our Chris an community at the Easter Vigil. Those who were bap zed or who made a profession of faith will con nue in their forma on through a year of mystagogia, a me when the group will con nue to meet with some regularity to deepen their understanding of living out our Catholic Chris an faith. The next six weeks, leading up to Pentecost Sunday, is a form of mystagogia for all of us, as we con nue to celebrate the Easter Season. The scriptures for the next several Sundays bring to mind the place of Jesus in our lives. We will hear from the Acts of the Apostles of the development of the early Church and its struggles with its iden ty and how its iden ty was to be lived out. Of special note are the changes that were necessary in order for the followers of Jesus to move from a sect of Judaism to an en rely new community of faith that was based upon the working of the Holy Spirit, rather than on the law, especially with the call to the Gen le community. A few years ago, Pope John Paul II proclaimed today, the Second Sunday of Easter, as Divine Mercy Sunday. This special devo on found its way to the universal Church by way of a Polish nun, Sister Faus na. In the gospel this Sunday, the appearance of Jesus to the disciples locked up in the upper room, is primarily about merciful love. There is no reason that Jesus should even have considered making his way through the locked doors to express his uncondi onal love to the cowardly disciples. His appearance indicates that nothing can keep Jesus’ mercifcul love from making itself known. No door, no wall–or even the lack of faith, will keep that love from being known and experienced. Today, Pope Francis is officially proclaiming an Extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy. As many of you know, I am in Rome this week, and I hope to find out where the announcement will occur, and to be present for the good news. What might this mean for the Church? I would dare to speculate that the Holy Father might be opening the doors to those who have been alienated or marginalized in many ways. I think you know who you are! Let's hope and pray that Pope Francis will extend the merciful heart of Jesus to those who have either locked themselves out or have been locked out of the Church community for any number of reasons. As Pope Francis has said many mes recently, "Mercy trumps Law!" We see that kind of mercy experienced throughout the life of Jesus. We might ask ourselves what is the mercy we are looking for in our lives? Or be er yet, how can our hearts show mercy to those we have alienated? It's not only big ins tu ons like the Church that alienate, but also we as individuals who do a pre y good job ourselves. What can we do during the Easter Season, as part of our mystagogia, to bring others into communion with ourselves and with the Church? Happy Easter…. Un l Next Week…. May the Lord Give You Peace!.... kjl Weekend Masses Saturday Vigil 5:15 pm Sunday 7:30 am, 9:30 am, Noon Weekday Masses (in St. Clare Chapel) 12:10 pm Reconciliation Saturdays 4:00 - 5:00 pm or by appointment Church Hours M-Th 9:00 am - 3:00 pm Fri 9:00 am - 1:30 pm St. Francis Elementary St. Francis Youth Ministry Diocesan Choral Festival Youth Day at Religious Education Congress ur school choir showcased their beau ful harmonies at the diocesan Choral Fes val held at Chris an Brothers High School on March 13. he Youth Ministry would like to thank our fellow parishioners for your unyielding support aiding us on our journey to deepen our understandings of our faith, the Church and the overall body of God’s people. Through your par cipa on in our fundraisers, such as the Parish T-shirts, Bake sales, Gi Wrapping—and your extremely generous dona ons, we were able to take six youth (plus chaperones) to the LA Congress Youth Day in Anaheim. As you may know, with the Happiest Place on Earth right next door, we u lized the opportuni es that arose to explore and deepen our fellowship as the teens from our parish. T O A er a long night’s drive, we awoke Thursday morning semi-ready to face the day; our adventure required arriving at the Conven on center at 7:00 am. The doors opened, and we were quickly swept away with excitement. Our opening session included excellent music, wi y humor and even an interview with Jesus. Then, the inspiring words of Father Rob Galea wandered across our ears moving us to “Do It Scared.” He spoke about his challenges in learning to be a performer and about how he was called to share God’s word through music, but stage fright stood in the way. He spoke about the challenges of being a priest in a country where being a Catholic isn’t a priority. He also challenged us to rid our lives of excuses. If we follow God’s call, it may be scary, but somemes you just have to “Do it Scared. “ St. Baldrick’s Day A t our school’s St. Baldrick’s Day celebra on, 32 heads (of students, staff, and 1 parent) were shaved, and just shy of $5,500 dollars was raised for St. Baldrick’s Founda on childhood cancer research! A er a busy lunch we a ended Mass with 7,500 other youth. With the number of Bishops, Priests and deacons in a endance, it’s a wonder that there were any other Masses in Anaheim that day! Our day concluded with our Keynote speaker, Father Boyle, who founded and con nues to run Homeboys Industries. It was very inspiring to hear the stories of how he is helping felons rejoin the workforce and turn their lives around. It was amazing to hear about rival gangs now working side by side. Prayer Requests The experience of Youth Day was one we will never forget. We look forward to a ending again next year. Once again, thank you to our parish for your support. St. Francis is my anchor and the friars my guides to show me the way to follow Jesus as our patron did, but in a modern world that is infinitely more complex than Francis ever dreamed possible. I treasure the friars in my life and I am grateful that God led me to them and to this church community. ince I walked into St. Francis over 35 years ago, the friars have been my conscience and moral compass. They have provided me with an example of simple living and with caring for the poor and underserved in society. They have encouraged me in my life’s work of helping immigrants. I’ve listened to hundreds of homilies delivered by many friars over all those years and, while I can’t quote them, I can say they have influenced my thinking very much. They have caused me to see the world differently from how our secular, materialis c society portrays it. I’m grateful for their insights. –Diane Mahoney I was a naïve young woman when I first arrived at St. Francis. I thought friars were from Robin Hood. I was amazed when Fr. Herb Wheatley came in to say Mass in his brown robe the first me I was there. “Those guys really exist?” I remember thinking. Li le did I know! I stayed because the parish community was so warm and welcoming. It s ll is, of course. Within a few weeks, I knew I had found my spiritual home. I have moved my house and office several mes over the 4 Franciscan Friars Centennial Celebration A Network of Grace Province of Saint Barbara Centennial Celebration: 1915-2015 Exhibit and Reception May 2 and 3 in Brunsman Hall T he year 2015 marks the centennial of the Province of Saint Barbara. In celebra ng the past 100 years of the Province, we will take a closer look at the daily work of the friars within this community through a traveling exhibi on presented at loca ons throughout the Province, highligh ng major movements and milestones and presen ng the lives and stories of our brothers commi ed to the needs of those inside and outside the Province. Join us as we celebrate together 100 years of Prayer, Fraternity, Joy, and Service. Accompany us on our journey with hope for the future. In Gratitude I n gra tude for 100 years of the Franciscan friars ministering to and journeying with us in our joys and in our sorrows, we want to take this Centennial opportunity to raise needed funds for the Fraternal Care Trust, which supports senior friars, as well as those who are just beginning their friar forma on. Our goal is to raise $30,000 for the friars. Let us give back to them generously, as they have given to us. Fraternal Care Trust dona on envelopes are in the church literature racks, and you may place them in the collec on basket or mail them. You can also contribute online at www.fraternalcaretrust.org.
