Both light and fire are rich symbols used throughout the Bible;
Christ is referred to as the Light of the world. It is not surprising
that we also use the image of light and fire in our liturgy. On Holy
Saturday, we bless the fire from which the Paschal Candle is lit.
The Paschal Candle, also known as the Easter Candle is lit for
every Mass during the Easter season to proclaim that Christ is
risen. The Paschal Candle is also used during funeral Masses.
At our baptism we receive a candle that is lit form the Paschal
Candle. The priest or deacon says, receive the light of Christ.
Both the godparents and parents are given the responsibility to
ensure the light of Christ and His teachings are made present for
the child to see and learn. In Matthew’s Gospel, we hear Christ
instructing us not to leave our light under a bushel basket but
rather on a lamp stand for all to see.
Another candle that is present in our worship space is the Sanctuary Candle. It is kept burning day and night, whenever the
Blessed Sacrament is in the tabernacle. The Sanctuary Candle
usually has a red globe around it and is located next to the tabernacle.
Lighting candles has always been popular in Catholic devotion
practices. In churches, chapels, and shrines there are designated
areas where the faithful can light a candle before a sacred image.
These candles are often referred to as vigil candles. Once you
light a candle you should offer a prayer. Your prayer may be asking for God’s grace, asking for the intercession of the Blessed
Virgin Mary or any of the saints for a particular need. It is customary to leave an offering for the candle to cover the cost of the
candle. In most cases the cost of the candle is indicated.
The lit candles serve as a visual to our prayers. The candle keeps
“vigil” in the church, chapel, or shrine when we are not able to be
present. We should continue our prayer although we leave the
sacred area of a church, chapel, or shrine. The candles join the
others with a sea of amber glows symbolizing the prayers of our
community of faith rising to heaven. Like incense our prayers rise
to heaven. When you see an area of vigil candles say a pray for
the intentions of those that are lit, light a candle yourself and say a
prayer.
We sense God’s presence in our lives through the senses of sight,
touch, smell, sound, and taste. Our liturgy is enhanced when we
fully participate in all these senses. This is one reason why light
and candles are a part of our liturgical practices. After writing this
article I am going to light a candle for the intention of all the people to whom I minister. May God bless you!
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Gary E. Kaiser
Remembrance Sunday
Sunday, November 9th
The Diocese of Evansville has named Sunday, November 9th, as Remembrance Sunday. While we
pray for the souls of those who have gone before us,
we remember how grateful we are for their lives and
their legacies. As you reflect on these loved ones,
our parish remembers the gifts that they have given
to provide for the future of our parish.
Please take a moment today to give thanks for their
lives and to reflect on how we can continue the legacy that they have left for us. Whether it is for our
parish, our Catholic schools, our cemeteries, or the
other ministries of our parish, we are grateful for
their gifts. Each of these parishioners had a vision
for our parish, and their foresight will be felt in our
future together as a parish family.
Many of us have made plans to leave gifts in our
Wills to our parish, while many are creating their
own Catholic Legacies with permanent gifts during
their lives. Please assist us with remembering those
who have come before us by continuing to leave a
legacy with our parish. For more information on
how you can create a Catholic Legacy please contact Todd Brock, Executive Director at The Catholic
Foundation, at 812-424-5536 (or email
[email protected]). With eternal gratitude, we
thank and acknowledge these family members and
loved ones.

November 9, 2014
The Holiday season is fast approaching,
and what better way to get into the spirit
than to take a name off of the Precious
Blood Giving Tree and help make Christmas
morning a little brighter for several local
children. We'll have the Giving Tree up early
again this year, so that everyone can take
advantage of the many wonderful Black Friday deals (and
don't forget to purchase some ‘SCRIP’ cards to help you
with those deals). We plan to have the tree and names up
on the weekend of November 22/23. We do ask that after
you choose your child’s name from the tree that you sign
the book that will be by the tree. The gifts will need to be
brought to the Gathering Area by Sunday, December
21, before the 10:30 Mass. Thanks again for all the generosity that is always displayed at this time of the year. If
you have any questions regarding the Giving Tree, or if
you'd like to have more than one name, would like to
possibly buy for siblings, please contact Katie Bower at
631-1282 and I'll try to help you out. Thank You!!

THE DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA
Koatz4Kidz
It’s that time of the year again when we all get out our winter clothes, our hats, gloves and
especially, coats and decide what fits and what doesn’t. That means that it is also time for
Koatz4Kidz! Precious Blood Church will be one of the sponsors for Koatz4Kidz along
with Sell4Free Welsh Realty and would like to remind you to please consider donating your
slightly worn outerwear, hats, and gloves to the Koatz4Kidz campaign.
Last year, we received almost 900 new and used coats, and also had enough money donated
to purchase 200 new coats. Please consider a monetary donation as well. If you do make a
cash donation, make your check payable to Precious Blood Church and memo Koatz4Kidz.
We will use this money to purchase new coats in the sizes that we tend to have in high
demand.
Coat distribution day will be Sat., Dec. 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the gym. Please
consider volunteering to help on that day, and also on set-up day, Fri., Dec. 12, at
3:00 p.m. in the gym. Please contact Andy Welsh at 309-0628 or email him
at [email protected], if you are interested in helping.
Your donations of both new and used coats and any financial donations will go a long way
to help those in need. God Bless.
Bountiful Blessings!
