Dear Parents/Guardians:
It’s hard to imagine that we are discussing upcoming events for November. Where have the past three months gone?
Enrollment is slightly down from last year, however, student learning is still going well at Moran. One thing we are
very pleased about is our parent volunteers. We so appreciate the time and energy our parent volunteers are giving to
help our students. I can only tell you that hundreds of hours have already been given. If you haven’t volunteered
yourself please consider it. Volunteering is a nice way to serve our students and community. Below I have listed
several topics of information for your review. Hopefully these will help you keep informed about important school
topics.
Playgrounds: We ask that parent/guardians not visit our playgrounds during recess time or when school is in session.
This policy is for your child’s safety and security as well as those of other parents.
Focused Instruction: Are you curious about what skill your child is working on and if they have mastered it or not?
Teachers are sending this information home. If you’re not seeing your child’s information coming home contact their
teacher. FI skills are those state mandated skills we want all students to know and be able to perform.
Picking Up/Dropping off Your Child: Only bused students should use the front drop off area of our school.
Students in cars, vans or trucks should be dropped off and picked up at the south entrance or exit. Please do
not drop off students prior to 8:25 a.m. Help keep our students safe. Your cooperation is appreciated.
Parent/Teacher Conferences: We appreciated your attendance during our two evenings of parent/teacher
conferences. Working together, in partnership, we can help your child reach their learning potential. We hope you
found your conference helpful.
Picture Retakes: Retakes were completed on Wednesday, October 29.
Daylight Savings Time: November 2 marks the end of daylight savings time. Don’t forget to set your clocks back
one hour.
D.A.R.E. Graduation: Tuesday, December 2 is D.A.R.E. graduation for 5th graders. Graduation starts at 11:30 a.m.
in the IMR. Seating is limited.
Don’t forget to come visit us. We’d love to have you visit or volunteer. Please remember only approved volunteers
may participate. If you have not been approved please stop by our office and pick up the forms you need in order to
serve. Moran Elementary School is dedicated to serving its students and families. Please do not hesitate to call or stop

Bus Unload / Parent Drop Off: 8:25 am, doors lock at 8:40
Parent Drop Off / Pick Up is at the south entrance closest to Lincolnway
Start Bell: 8:40 am (Please note our doors lock at 8:40. Students must be in their
classroom seat or they will be noted tardy.
Our volunteers ROCK! Thank you to everyone who volunteered for the book

Red Ribbon Week—Moran and Martins
We hope you had a chance to view Moran student artwork supporting a Drug
Free lifestyle. Students decorated Martins grocery bags for display at the
Bittersweet Martins store. Thanks to Heather Bell our Youth Service Bureau
counselor this was a great success!
PHM School Meal Program
This fall, PHM school cafeterias are meeting tough new federal nutrition standards
for school meals, ensuring that meals are healthy, well-balanced and tasty as well
as providing students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school. Now is a
great time to encourage your kids to choose school meals! Menus are posted on
the PHM website http:\www.phmschools.org
Lunch Program The complete lunch includes 1 Entrée, fruit, vegetable, and milk.
Students must take a least 1 fruit or vegetable but may take both or 2 fruits or 2
vegetables. Students choosing more than 1 Entrée and 3 sides will be charged on
an Ala Carte basis for the additional items.
Snack Purchases A variety of snacks and drinks meeting the new “Smart
Snacks” regulation are offered to students. Snack purchases are limited to one
snack and one additional drink per day.
Debit Cards I would like to recommend this easy to use option so your child does
not need to bring money daily. You may pay on line at www.mylunchmoney.com or
send cash or check into the school. Please specify your child’s name and “lunch
money” on the envelope. Meal prices are $1.90 for elementary, $2.10 for middle
and high schools. Snacks at the elementary range from $.25 to $.75.
You may register your child at www.mylunchmoney.com to monitor the account
balance and food purchases even if you choose not to fund your child’s account
on line. On line payments may take up to 24 hours to process. When you register
your child, please put a zero in front of the student ID number.

Please Note:
The PHM Wellness Initiative does not allow fast food and other commercial foods
to be carried into our schools for student lunches. We do not allow soda or
carbonated drinks at school. We appreciate your cooperation in supporting the
PHM Wellness Initiative. Thank you.
Elementary Flu Mist Program……

Due to recent budgetary restraints at the St. Joseph County Health
Department, we will NOT be offering the flu mist program in our
elementary buildings this school year. Sorry for any
inconvenience! Please call your family physician or take advantage of
other flu clinic sites! It is very important to get a flu vaccination!!!
Transportation Changes
Any time your child’s end of day transportation changes, please be sure to
send a note to your child’s teacher. The teacher will share the note with
office personal and the bus driver if needed. If your student is riding home
with a friend, we will need a note from both families. We
take our responsibility for the safe dismissal of every
child seriously. Unless we have written direction to do
otherwise, children will be required to board their assigned buses.
High Ability Identification
In accordance with the Indiana high ability law, we are required to have an identification process in place to identify students of high ability in the general intellectual and specific academic domains. We identify students who have high ability
in language arts and/or math.
Every kindergartener, second and fifth grader who has not been previously identified in a subject area is considered for high ability identification.
Testing for the high ability identification process will begin in December.

Please check your student’s planner for school policies regarding
academics, student conduct, dress code, transportation, weather delay
procedures and so much more! It’s a great resource to help students
and parents answer questions.
Volunteers Approval Process
We value our volunteers! PHM Board of Trustees has a policy that requires
Limited Criminal History checks on all volunteers. Please be sure you have
completed the two sided form. Forms will take 2-3 days for processing prior
to the day you plan to volunteer and are available in the office or online at
www.phm.k12.in.us.
Layer two of our security screening requires that all volunteers and visitors will
need to have their driver’s license scanned in our RAPTOR security system.
Daily passes will be issued for all approved volunteers and visitors. Thank you
for helping us keep your children safe while at school.
