Important Information
about Reciprocity
Reciprocity
Reciprocity agreements between the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors and other Boards allow
a contractor to receive credit in Louisiana for approved classifications held with the reciprocal Board without
taking the Louisiana trade exam. Reciprocity also allows a company to be exempted from the 60-day waiting
period for out-of-state contractors. Contractors seeking reciprocity with any Board must apply for that
Board’s license. (Please see the map of the US and chart on the following pages to see which states Louisiana
has reciprocity agreements with and for which classifications). Reciprocity agreements also allow a Louisiana
licensed contractor to receive credit with the reciprocal Board for examinations for classifications held in
Louisiana.

The firm must:
1. be originally incorporated (i.e., chartered) in the reciprocal state, or the owner(s) must be resident(s)

After applying for reciprocity in Louisiana
Once we have received all required documents and fees, your reciprocity request will be considered by the
Board at the next available Board Meeting. If approved by the Board, you will not have to take the Trade
exam, and/or the 60-day waiting period for out-of-state contractors will be exempted.
Reciprocity and the Business and Law exam
If you have met all reciprocity requirements, the Examinations section will send a Laws, Rules, and Regulations exam
