Department of Examinations and Assessment Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors Important Information about Reciprocity Reciprocity Reciprocity agreements between the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors and other Boards allow a contractor to receive credit in Louisiana for approved classifications held with the reciprocal Board without taking the Louisiana trade exam. Reciprocity also allows a company to be exempted from the 60-day waiting period for out-of-state contractors. Contractors seeking reciprocity with any Board must apply for that Board’s license. (Please see the map of the US and chart on the following pages to see which states Louisiana has reciprocity agreements with and for which classifications). Reciprocity agreements also allow a Louisiana licensed contractor to receive credit with the reciprocal Board for examinations for classifications held in Louisiana. Requirements to apply for Reciprocity in Louisiana from another state The firm must: 1. be originally incorporated (i.e., chartered) in the reciprocal state, or the owner(s) must be resident(s) thereof. 2. have held a license in the reciprocal state for at least three years (except for Texas, for which there is currently no minimum time period). 3. not have been sanctioned by the Board of the reciprocal state for the past three years for violations of their contractor licensing laws. 4. meet all other requirements for licensure by the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors. How to apply for a Louisiana license using Reciprocity 1. Submit: a. a completed, signed and notarized Commercial and/or Residential Application. Download the application from our website at http://www.lacontractor.org/commercial.htm . b. a completed, signed and notarized financial statement for the company seeking a license in Louisiana. c. the Qualifying Party form(s) for the person(s) who will qualify the company for the requested classifications. 2. Remit all of the required application and examination fees. A fee schedule can be found at http://www.lacontractor.org/fee_schedule.html. 3. Send a “Request for Verification of License” form found on the last page of this document to the reciprocal state in which you are currently licensed. Revised 6/17/2014 After applying for reciprocity in Louisiana Once we have received all required documents and fees, your reciprocity request will be considered by the Board at the next available Board Meeting. If approved by the Board, you will not have to take the Trade exam, and/or the 60-day waiting period for out-of-state contractors will be exempted. Reciprocity and the Business and Law exam If you have met all reciprocity requirements, the Examinations section will send a Laws, Rules, and Regulations exam to be completed by the Qualifying Party. Submit the appropriate license application to the reciprocal Board in the other state. 2. Find out from the reciprocal Board their rules for reciprocal credit for examinations. 3. Obtain from the reciprocal Board or its website the appropriate verification form to be used to apply for reciprocal status. 4. Submit the other Board’s verification form to the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors to be filled out. Include a note indicating what address you would like the form sent to. 5. Send the form with an $85 processing/research fee. Reciprocity is generally an endorsement by each Board of the other Board’s exams. The qualifying party who has taken an exam for a license given by one Board can receive credit for the examination by the other Board.
