Healthy Start and the Veterans Hospital; teddy bears for the

House and the Salvation Army. We meet on the fourth Friday
of each month, except in November we will meet on the third
Friday of the month. If you enjoy sewing, knitting, quilting

Update on Iraq
Even though the news
media is no longer
reporting on it, the crisis
of the Iraqi refugees
continues. Since August
more than a million
Iraqis have been forced by
ISIS to flee their homes
or risk losing their lives.
They had to leave their
homes without money,
belongings, or vehicles,
wearing only summer clothing on their backs. Now that colder weather is
moving into northern Iraq, they need warmer clothing: coats, blankets, and
heaters. Many of the refugees are trapped in Iraq without money to buy
anything, and without an opportunity to earn. Unemployment in Iraq had
been about 40% since the wars, but now it is 90% in certain areas because of
the influx of hundreds of thousands of displaced refugees within the country’s
borders. Food, gasoline, and other supplies are running low, and as the need
increases, so does the price. Some of the wealthier Christians left Iraq before
ISIS took over seeking refuge in neighboring countries such as Jordan, Syria,
and Turkey. Those who can afford it are escaping to Europe, North America,
and Australia. Many of the refugees who have been internally displaced within
Iraq have been granted help by local Christian churches such as the Kirkuk
Presbyterian Church, but there are hundreds of thousands just living on the
city streets or in the mountain wilderness.
Pastor Haitham Jazrawi of the Kirkuk Presbyterian Church is a leading
native born Christian pastor who has been serving our Lord Jesus Christ, his
congregation, and the refugees for many years in Kirkuk. He strongly believes
that it is absolutely essential that Christians stay in the Middle East calling
them the ‘salt of the earth’ and the ‘light of the world’ (Mt 5:13-14). He says,
“Who will be salt and light to our Muslim brothers and sisters?” As a living
example of Christian care, the Kirkuk Presbyterian Church congregation is
caring for 62 Christian refugees in their church and expects more refugees
in the future. They have converted their Sunday school classrooms to family
living quarters, provided food, clothing, blankets, mattresses, refrigeration,
stoves, and portable toilets. The congregation has extended its mission outside
the church compound by giving similar supplies to those living on the streets

and in the hillsides and mountains nearby. The
church has taken the refugees outside the church
property for picnics and games, and provided
Christian education along with concerts and plays
in the Fellowship Hall. Pastor Haitham does not
expect to be thanked for the work his church is
doing as it is an example of “letting your light
shine forth before others so that they may give
glory to our Father in heaven. (Mt 5: 16).”
City schools are not open for classes this fall because they are housing refugees,
but the Kirkuk Church Kindergarten has been able to open because it is a
private school, now providing pre-school Christian based education to almost
400 children in this war torn country. Their Primary School is ready to open,
but because of the war on ISIS the Baghdad government has not been able to
issue the needed permits.
Pastor Haitham and his church are helping to guide other Christian
congregations to set up refugee camps within their churches. The refugees are
attending church and prayer services regularly, and many Chaldean (Catholic)
and Orthodox Christians are receiving an evangelical education by reading
and discussing the Bible. While many church members have fled from Kirkuk,
the refugees are keeping the pews full and experiencing the love of God. Pastor
Haitham knows that this is the mission that God has chosen for him to serve in
Iraq. He and his wife are dedicated to staying and continuing to serve Iraq. He
is a modern day living example of the Apostle Paul in preaching and serving in
spite of life-threatening danger and political instability. People say he is crazy
to stay there, and say that “You take the Jesus thing too seriously.” He replies,
“Christ took me pretty seriously when he died for me on the cross!”

Church have been able to do many of these
wonderful things because of the continuing
generosity of Christians here in the USA,
including Church of the Palms. We have
donated to that church and school since
Pastor Haitham visited here in 2009 through
our Mission Committee and individually
through the PC/USA Extra Commitment Fund #053049 (The Iraq Partnership
Network). Donations from the Presbyterian Women’s Christmas Bazaar held
on November 8 will also benefit the Displaced Iraqi Christian Refugees.

Support Our Troops
Veterans Day had its birth in 1954 when the national holiday,
Armistice Day, was redesignated. Armistice Day, recognized
the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when World War I
hostilities officially ceased. By 1954, two additional wars had occurred, World War
II and Korea. In remembrance of those who served in those conflicts and those
who served (and are serving) in conflicts since that time, Veterans Day is now
celebrated. You can remember those who served and continue to serve our great
country and show your Christian charity by packing and shipping one or more
morale support boxes to our troops serving in Afghanistan. Boxes with complete
instructions and addresses are available following in the church office.
The Salvation Army -
Angel Tree
The Christmas Angel tree will be set up under the fellowship tree starting
today. You can be an angel by taking a gift request and returning that
gift to church by December 10. Gift options range from the Salvation
Army’s wish list for children and senior citizens to items needed
for other missions of the church such as Resurrection House and
Good Samaritan Mission in Wimauma. Be an angel and bring a
smile to someone who might otherwise be forgotten this Christmas.

‘Tis The Season To Ring The Salvation Army Bells
November 28 - December 24 (various times)
Publix on Bee Ridge Road & Beneva
Once again we have an opportunity to show the
love and light of Christ in the cold dark world
by ringing the Salvation Army bells. We will
be ringing at the Publix just down the street
from the church at Beneva and Bee Ridge. We
are inviting you to sign up for a two-hour shift
between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Monday - Saturday, beginning November 28 and
running through Christmas Eve. We will also
ring on Saturdays ONLY from 11:00 a.m. - 7:00
p.m. at Macy’s at Southgate Mall. Like last year,
we don’t want anyone to ring alone, so please sign
up with a family member or friend from church.
Or even better, invite a friend who doesn’t attend
church to ring with you! We especially need
people with a flexible schedule to sign-up as substitute bell ringers in
case someone has to cancel his/her shift.

Foster Hope - Socks & Underwear Drive
Hayes Leaver would appreciate your help with giving kids in
foster care the basics, so during your next shopping trip add

23. Your donations will be distributed by the Safe Children
Coalition to foster kids in need as they come into care. If you
don’t have time to stop at the store we would be happy to take

For the week of November 16, 2104
Devotion: Use this resource at home to guide your household’s daily
devotions. You can do this alone, as a couple, as a family; in the morning,
during the day, or at night. Find a routine that works best for you.
Pray: Light a candle and open your devotion time with a prayer.
God who beats swords into plowshares, you remained faithful to the
people of Judah when all hope seemed lost. Remind us that you always
remain faithful, even when we cannot see it, for the sake of Jesus Christ,
our Lord. Amen.
Reflect: Reflect on the key verse from Sunday’s reading.
He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples;
they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning
hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they
learn war any more. Isaiah 2:4
Study: Study the reading and consider the background.
First Isaiah was written for Judah (the Southern Kingdom), whose
borders were being threatened by Assyria, the same country that had
already conquered Samaria and defeated Israel a few hundred years
before. The Rabshakeh (the chief steward of the king of Assyria, and
messenger) threatened Judah and invited the people to surrender,
promising they would be taken care of. King Hezekiah of Judah
remained faithful to God, asking Isaiah to plead to God on behalf of
Judah. God heard King Hezekiah’s plea and saved Judah from the
Assyrian king. Once again, God’s promise of deliverance was kept.

God’s promises to God’s people?

Connect in conversation with others in your household. Discuss the
following questions, or simply check in with “Highs” and “Lows.”



What was a high point of your day? What was a low point?
How do you suppose God decides how to arbitrate when
communities are at odds with each other?
When have you trusted in God at a time when trusting took
great courage? How did it turn out?
Do:
By acting on what we learn, we make God’s word come alive. Do the

Keep a prayer journal. Record your prayers and how God answers
them.
