Fans will get treated to an array of spectacular performances, trick plays, and heroic efforts. After all, the City Championship and the chance to keep the Victory Bell, is on the line. Here is a preview of what to expect tonight starting at 7 p.m. at Moyse Field. If Jung is out, Ruiz will have to carry the offense Hoover has nice 1-2 punch with Nersisyan, Parawan In the two previous meetings against Hoover, senior Daniel Jung has run wild. As a sophomore he scored on a 70-yard fumble recovery and a 59-yard interception return, and then ran for a third touchdown on offense. Last year he scored two touchdowns and rushed for 173 yards. Now, word comes that Jung may not play in tonight’s game against Hoover because of a knee injury suffered last Friday against Burroughs. At best, his playing time will be dramatically curtailed. That puts the pressure squarely on the shoulders of senior Luis Ruiz. Ruiz has been a punishing runner this season and he is no stranger to Hoover’s end zone, having scored two touchdowns last season against the Tornadoes. GHS’s offense also features lightning quick receiver Ricky Loudermill. On defense, Albert Markosian is a relentless pass rusher and could be a nightmare match up. GHS picked up a week one win over San Gabriel, 35-0, and then surprised Arcadia, 28-14. The win spoiled Arcadia’s Homecoming night and it was the first time GHS had beaten the Apaches since 1991. Against Arcadia, Jung and Ruiz combined for 222 yards rushing and the Nitros’ defense smothered Arcadia. The 21-20 overtime loss to Pasadena also showcased the Nitros’ ability to run the football. Ruiz carried the ball 34 times (164 yards) and Jung had 22 carries (133 yards.) For Glendale to win... A key for the Nitros is the play of the offensive line. If they can create holes for Ruiz and Jung, it could be a long night for Hoover. The Nitros will run and run and run the ball. If they are limited by the Hoover defense, GHS’s passing attack with Loudermill and Mateo Morris will be called into action. GHS has more weapons than Hoover and a wealth of experience on the field with 35 seniors on the team. Hoover is paced by running backs Davit Nersisyan and Vaughn Parawan. The duo has been solid all season when healthy. Both players play on defense too, as do many of the Tornadoes. On defense, end Josh Lee, nose guard Geraldy Martinez and defensive tackle Jessie Martinez team up to give Hoover a strong front line. Hoover has lost eight straight games coming into tonight’s contest. Their lone win came in their second game of the season against Sotomayor from L.A. In that 26-12 triumph against the Wolves, Nersisyan was impressive, rushing for 136 yards. Now nine weeks removed from victory, and the Tornadoes are hungry and are looking forward to meeting the favored Dynamiters. In their loss to Arcadia, Hoover scored first and demonstrated that they could move the ball. Injuries have been the biggest obstacle for Hoover. They have yet to play a game with the team at full strength and sometimes suit up fewer than 20 players. And outside of their one win, Hoover has not scored more than seven points in a game this season, and is averaging a paltry three points per contest against league competition. That won’t get it done against GHS. For Hoover to win... They must control the game clock and gain plenty of first downs. That will keep Glendale’s potent offense parked on the sideline. If GHS’s Daniel Jung does not play tonight that will help the Tornadoes’ cause but they will still have to deal with Nitro back Luis Ruiz, and he is a load. Nersisyan and Parawan, among others, must deliver on both sides of the ball, but especially on offense where the Tornadoes often sputter. Hoover needs to move the chains, finish drives, and eliminate dumb mistakes. 2014 Glendale High School Varsity Football Scores 2014 Hoover High School Varsity Football Scores 2-7 (overall), 1-5 (Pacific League) 1-8 (overall), 0-6 (Pacific League) GHS GHS GHS GHS GHS GHS GHS GHS GHS 35-0 0-20 7-23 0-30 28-14 13-48 21-41 20-21 (OT) 0-38 San Gabriel La Canada South Pasadena John Muir Arcadia Crescenta Valley Burbank Pasadena Burroughs Dynamiters To Watch Daniel Jung #26 Luis Ruiz 5’ 10”, 175 lbs., Sr. Running Back, Outside Linebacker HHS HHS HHS HHS HHS HHS HHS HHS HHS 7-35 26-12 0-39 7-24 0-47 0-63 7-42 7-48 0-40 Hollywood Sotomayor South Pasadena Arcadia Pasadena Burroughs Crescenta Valley Burbank John Muir #33 Ricky Loudermill #4 Josh Lee #54 Mateo Morris #2 Geraldy Martinez #71 Albert Markosian #14 Jessie Martinez #44 5’ 10”, 170 lbs., Sr. QB, Wide Receiver, Defensive Back 5’ 11”, 175 lbs., Sr. Running Back, Defensive End All-CIF back George Musacco led GHS to a win over Hoover in 1946.
