Masterclass Leaders Gordon Nardell QC Michelle Metz 39 Essex St Gordon’s practice focuses on European and worldwide commercial disputes. Much of his work involves renewable and conventional energy projects in Europe and Asia, dealing with a range of EPC, contract and investment claims. He also acts in disputes involving EU procurement, competition and state aid rules, handling complex arbitration and litigation in regulated sectors. A Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Gordon originally practised law as a commercial litigation solicitor. In the 1990s he served in the legal affairs directorate of the Council of Europe dealing with the law of treaties and international organisations. He moved to the Bar from the UK Parliamentary Counsel Office where he was a member of the drafting teams for a number Acts of Parliament. Executive Director, Hill International Michelle Metz has over twenty years of experience in construction and is a planner by training. Her site planning experience includes large civil engineering roads, complex rail, commercial fit-outs and high-rise tower block projects. Michelle has worked on projects worldwide, where she has applied various critical path methods of analysis to identify the frequency, extent and causes of critical delay to a variety of construction and process engineering projects. She is able to draw on her strong planning background to assist and advise clients in matters of delay to engineering and construction projects. Michelle has experience as a party appointed delay expert and has given oral evidence to an arbitral tribunal in Hong Kong. Karen Kirkham Executive Director, Hill International Tim Challis is an experienced Chartered Quantity Surveyor with an MSc in Construction Law and Arbitration from Kings College London, and has a sustained record of achievement in a variety of roles in both the public and private sectors. Prior to joining Hill, he gained particular expertise in procurement with the NHS and in the private sector on infrastructure projects. He has been appointed on numerous occasions as Quantum Expert in both international arbitration and statutory adjudication (in the UK) producing written expert testimony and giving oral evidence at Hearings. Partner, Edwin Coe LLP Karen is a construction lawyer in Edwin Coe’s Property Group. She was admitted as a solicitor in 2001. Prior to joining private practice she enjoyed a varied career including as legal director of the Construction Confederation, where she sat on various JCT committees and in local government. Karen has worked for developers, funders, contractors and consultants including on major urban regeneration and commercial projects. She has particular expertise in hotels/hotel funding. Karen is recommended as a Leading Individual in Chambers & Partners 2013. Karen Best Director, Hill International Karen is a chartered civil engineer by training. Karen worked as a contractor for many years on a number of projects in Belfast and London, including the British Airways London Eye. She spent a year as a designer on secondment to WS Atkins in their transportation division. Karen completed an MSc in Construction Law and Arbitration at King’s College London. Karen specialises in delay analysis, and has employed various critical path methods of analysis to investigate a wide range of retrospective delay disputes. She has been appointed and given oral evidence as an Expert Witness on matters of construction delay. The natural choice for complex high value procurement issues, Sarah is one of the leading barristers in the field of EU procurement law and regularly advises Government bodies, local authorities and industry clients. As a Treasury A Panel Counsel prior to taking silk, Sarah represented U.K. Government bodies on numerous disputes. In addition to her work as Counsel, Sarah Hannaford is a trained Mediator and accredited Adjudicator. Jennifer Robinson Senior Associate, Pinsent Masons Jennifer has been working in public procurement for over 10 years, advising public and private sector clients on all aspects of procurement. Jennifer is recognised for her work in this area in Chambers & Partners and the international Who’s Who Guide of Public Procurement. She is currently advising several Government Departments and public bodies on live tender processes at various stages. Typical issues she has advised on recently include: bidder withdrawal; variations; and pre-market engagement.
