M USIC N OTES
The organ piece before the service today is the Concerto in B minor by
Antonio Vivaldi (1678 -1741) arranged for organ by Johann G ottfried Walther
(1684- 1748). Vivaldi composed sever al hundred concertos for solo violin and
orchestra. His co ncertos wer e admired by many other composers of the day; here,
the composer Walther has arr anged a concerto for organ. It contains the typical
three movements: Allegro -Adagio- Allegro.
During Communion, the St. Dunstan ’s Choir will sing the anthem “Dives and
Lazar us” by Ral ph Vaughan Williams (1872 - 1958). The text of this anthem is
inspired by Jesus ’ parable of the rich man (tr aditionally ref erred to as Dives) and
Lazar us found in Luke 16. A dr amatic text, Vaughan Williams set the text to a
familiar hymn tune with rich ha rmonies for men ’s voices.

Collect of the Day
Celebrant The Lord be with you.
People
And also with you.
Celebrant Let us pray.
Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us
so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace
and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in
our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
for ever and ever. Amen.
THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
First Reading—Zephaniah 1: 7, 12-18
Be silent before the Lord GOD! For the day of the LORD is at hand; the LORD has
prepared a sacrifice, he has consecrated his guests. At that time I will search
Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the people who rest complacently on their
dregs, those who say in their hearts, “The LORD will not do good, nor will he do
harm.” Their wealth shall be plundered, and their houses laid waste. Though they
build houses, they shall not inhabit them; though they plant vineyards, they shall not
drink wine from them. The great day of the LORD is near, near and hastening fast;
the sound of the day of the LORD is bitter, the warrior cries aloud there. That day
will be a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of ruin and devastation, a
day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness, a day of trumpet
blast and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the lofty battlements. I will
bring such distress upon people that they shall walk like the blind; because they have
sinned against the LORD, their blood shall be poured out like dust, and their flesh
like dung. Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of
the LORD's wrath; in the fire of his passion the whole earth shall be consumed; for
a full, a terrible end he will make of all the inhabitants of the earth.

Teach us to num-ber our days that we may ap-ply our hearts to wis-dom.
Lord, you have been our refuge from one generation to another. Before the
mountains were brought forth, or the land and the earth were born, from age to age
you are God.
All repeat the refrain
You turn us back to the dust and say, “Go back, O child of earth.” For a thousand
years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past and like a watch in th e night.
All repeat the refrain
You sweep us away like a dream; we fade away suddenly like the grass. In the
morning it is green and flourishes; in the evening it is dried up and withered.
All repeat the refrain
For we consume away in your displeasure; we are afraid because of your wrathful
indignation. Our iniquities you have set before you, and our secret sins in the light
of your countenance.
All repeat the refrain
Second Reading—I Thessalonians 5: 1-10
Concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have
anything written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord
will come like a thief in the night. When they say, “There is peace and security,”
then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant
woman, and there will be no escape! But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that
day to surprise you like a thief; for you are all children of light and children of the
day; we are not of the night or of darkness. So then let us not fall asleep as others
do, but let us keep awake and be sober; for those who sleep sleep at night, and those
who are drunk get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober,
and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.
For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord
Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live
with him.

Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Jesus said, “For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and
entrusted his property to them; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to
another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. After a long time
the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. Then the one who
had received the five talents came forward, bringing five more talents, saying,
'Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.' His
master said to him, 'Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been
trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the
joy of your master.' And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying,
`Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.' His
master said to him, 'Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been
trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the
joy of your master.' Then the one who had received the one talent also came
forward, saying, 'Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did
not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; so I was afraid , and I went
and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' But his master
replied, 'You wicked and lazy slave! You knew, did you, that I reap where I did not
sow, and gather where I did not scatter? Then you ought to have invested my mon ey
with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with
interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to the one with the ten talents. For
to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from
those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.”

Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give them courage

We commend to your mercy all who have died, that your will for them may be

Confession of Sin
Celebrant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word,

loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We
are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have
mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The people remain standing. The Celebrant continues
We acclaim you holy Lord, glorious in power. Your mighty works reveal your
wisdom and love. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into
our care, so that, in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your
10
creatures. When our disobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to
the power of death. In your mercy you came to your help, so that in seeking you we
might find you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you, and through
the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation.
Father, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your
only son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, he
lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the go od news of
salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfill your purpose he
gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the
whole creation new. And, that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him
who died and rose for us, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift for those who
believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring to fulfillment the
sanctification of all.
When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father,
having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end; at supper
with them he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and
gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and
when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This
is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the
forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ’s death
and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to you
right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you
have give us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you.

We praise you,

and we pray to you, Lord our God.
Lord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend
upon us, and upon these gifts, sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts
for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood
of your Son Jesus Christ. Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become
one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of your Name.
Remember, Lord, your one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, redeemed by the
blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard its faith, and preserve it in peace.
Remember all who minister in your Church. Remember all your people, and those
who seek your truth. Remember all who have died in the peace of Christ, and those
11
whose faith is known to you alone; bring them into the place of eternal joy and light.
And grant that we may find our inheritance with the Blessed Virgin Mary, with
patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and all the saints who have found favor
with you in ages past. We praise you in union with them and give you glory through
your Son Jesus Christ Our Lord.
Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours,
Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever.

Anthem—Dives and Lazarus
Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)
As it fell out upon one day, rich Diverus he made a feast. And he invited all his
friends and gentry of the best. As it fell out upon one day poor Lazarus, he was so
poor he came and laid him down and down, even down at Diverus’ door.
Then Lazarus laid him down and down, even down at Diverus’ ga te. “Some meat,
some drink, brother Diverus for Jesus Christ his sake.” “Thou art none of mine,
brother Lazarus, that lies begging at my gate. No meat, no drink, will I give thee, for
Jesus Christ his sake.”
13
Then Diverus sent out his hungry dogs to bite him as he lay. They hadn’t the power
to bite one bite but licked his sores away. Then Diverus sent out his merry men to
worry poor Lazarus away. They had not the power to strike one stroke, but threw
their whips away.
As it fell out upon one day, poor Lazarus, he sickened and died, there came two
angels out of Heaven, his soul therein to guide. “Rise up, rise up, brother Lazarus,
and come along with me, for you’ve a place prepared in Heaven for to sit upon an
angel’s knee.”
As it fell out upon one day, rich Diverus he sickened and died, there came two
serpents out of Hell his soul therein to guide. “Rise up, rise up, brother Diverus, and
come along with me, there is a place prepared in Hell for to sit upon a serpent ’s
knee.”
