GATHERING
(please take time for silent reflection)
Prelude
Requiescat in pace
Kenneth Meek
Brief Order of Confession and Forgiveness
P Blessed be the Holy Trinity, + one God, the Sovereign over all the
earth, the Wisdom from on high, our merciful Judge and Savior.
C Amen.
P Let us boldly approach the throne of grace, trusting in God’s mercy
and love.
Silence is kept for reflection.
P Generous and faithful God,
C we confess to you all the ways, known and unknown, that we
reject and undermine your steadfast love. Though you made
us your people, we treat strangers with suspicion. Though
you forgave our debts, we collect without mercy. Yet we are
quick to pass judgment on others. Have mercy on us, O God,
and remember your promise to us, for the sake of Jesus
Christ, our Lord. Amen.
P The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will
stand forever. Through the living Word, + Jesus Christ, God
forgives your every debt, your every sin, and gives you a new heart
and a new spirit.
C Amen.

WORD
First Reading: Revelation 7:9-17. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . HB p. 999
The book of Revelation is written to seven churches in western Asia
Minor during a time of great oppression. Today’s reading is a response
to the question asked in 6:17: “Who is able to stand?” The writer gives
the faithful the assurance of God’s protection and a vision of victory.
L The word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Second Reading: 1 John 3:1-3 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . HB p. 990
A saint is one who has been set apart by God for God’s purposes.
God, out of divine love, set us apart to be the children of God. Our
holy hope is that we shall see God as God really is.
L The word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Gospel Acclamation

and the one who is seated on the throne will | shelter them.
The Gospel will be read from the midst of the congregation,
symbolizing Christ among us. You are invited to face the Bible
as the Gospel is read.

P The holy gospel according to Matthew.
C Glory to you, O Lord.
Gospel: Matthew 5:1-12 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . HB p. 785
In the beatitudes, Jesus provides a unique description of those who
are blessed with God’s favor. His teaching is surprising and shocking
to those who seek wealth, fame, and control over others.
P The gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to you, O Christ.

Remembrance of the Faithful Departed
P With reverence, thanksgiving and affection we
remember before you, O everlasting God, all
our departed family members and friends,
especially those whose names are read to you
now:
P Keep us in union with them here through faith
and love toward you, that hereafter we may
enter into your presence and be numbered with
those who serve you and look upon your face in glory everlasting,
through your son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C Amen.
Lighting of the Candles
You are invited to come forward at this time to light a candle as a
tangible way to thank God for sharing with you your departed loved
ones.

How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place
from A German Requiem
by Johannes Brahms
Chancel Choir
How lovely is Thy dwelling place, O Lord of Hosts!
For my soul, it longeth yea fainteth for the courts of the Lord;
My soul and body crieth out, yea, for the living God.
How blest are they that dwell within Thy house.
They praise Thy name evermore. -Psalm 84
Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Sharing of the Peace
P The peace of Christ be with you always.
C And also with you.
(Take time to share God's peace with fellow worshipers)

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen
P Taste and see that the Lord is good.
C Thanks be to God.
Communion Notes: You are invited to come and receive the
real presence of Christ in the sacrament. The ushers will direct
you forward.

Music During Communion
What Wondrous Love Is This
Traditional Appalachian Hymn
Arranged by Alice Parker and Robert Shaw
Chancel Choir
What wondrous love is this,
O my Soul.
That caused the Lord of bliss
To bear the dreadful curse for my soul?
When I was sinking down,
Sinking down,
Beneath God’s righteous frown,
Christ laid aside his crown for my soul.
To God and to the Lamb I will sing,
To God and to the Lamb,
Who is the Great I Am,
While millions join the theme, I will sing.
And when from death I’m free,
I’ll sing on.
I’ll sing His love for me,
And through eternity I’ll sing on.
Sing With All the Saints in Glory #426

keep you in his grace.

Crossing the Bar
Chancel Choir
poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892)
music by Gwyneth Walker (b. 1947)
In this poem, Tennyson uses imagery of the sea to create a metaphor
of the journey from life to death. Crossing the bar refers to the
crossing of the sandbars that develop close to the shore. They
provide a natural barrier between the safety of the shore and the
mysterious ocean. As waves crash against these sandbars in their
attempt to reach the shore, a loud mournful sound is created which
Tennyson refers to as the “moaning of the bar”. Instead of this
turbulent water that causes the moaning of the bar, the poet wishes for
a tide that is so full it seems asleep, containing no foam or sound. Like
a flood, it will carry him beyond the limits of time and space where he
will see his Pilot face to face.
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea.
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.
I can see my Pilot face to face,
Across the bar!
