Old Heralds Now Online Thanks
to Library Preservation Project

Want to find out who was on the City
Council in the 1950s or what you could buy
a home for during World War I? Now you
can do so with the click of a mouse, thanks
to a three-and-a-half-year effort culminating in
the digitization of 79 microfilm rolls of the El
Segundo Herald. Viewers can now access nearly
5,000 editions of the longtime community paper
on the El Segundo Public Library’s website by
going to www.eslib.org and clicking on the “El
Segundo Herald Newspaper Database” link on
the left-hand menu. The database home page
includes search options to zero in on particular
years, topics and other items of interest. One
can find newspaper images by keyword or
date and viewers may also create a free user
account to save their searches for later review.
When it became painfully aware by early 2011
that much of the older Herald microfilm had
begun to deteriorate to the potential point of no
return, El Segundo Public Library staff met with
members of the Library Board of Trustees, the
Friends of the El Segundo Library, and Herald
officials to discuss preservation options. “The
microfilm was in danger of being lost forever
after decades of use by community members
and researchers,” explained Library Director
Debra Brighton. “Something had to be done.”
The meeting resulted in a staff directive to
locate a service capable of digitizing the microfilm and to look into options to place the
images online for perpetuity. The research led to
the recruitment of a Bethesda, Maryland-based
company called PTFS (Progressive Technology Federal Systems) that had garnered rave
reviews for its recent work with the Torrance
and Whittier public libraries to digitize collections for those cities. “PTFS would scan the El
Segundo Herald microfilm images and would
also provide software to access the images
online,” said Senior Librarian, Support Services
Mark Herbert, the point person for the project.
However, getting the job done wouldn’t
come cheap, with a hefty price tag of $45,000.
The Friends—which had put away monies
anticipating this project--subsidized the first
$24,000 out of its own funds to cover the
initial conversion costs and then embarked on
an ultimately successful community donation
and grant campaign to raise the remaining
$21,000 to pay for software acquisition and
server hosting. The Herald itself was one of
the donors, kicking in $2,000 at the beginning
of the outreach effort in 2012.
Still, the process was lengthy and painstaking. Rather than risk that the entire microfilm
collection might get lost or damaged during
shipment, the Library sent out the rolls in
batches—with a couple of small test runs early
on to ensure the project would go off without a
hitch. Over about a year period, PTFS scanned
all the microfilm and converted the images
to PDF and .tif files. Then the Information
Services Division worked with PTFS to install
the “ArchivalWare” image viewing software
onto the City’s server and to upload the PDF

At Studio Antiques, You Find
What You’re Looking For

In all of our lives there is an undercurrent of things. Things you want; things
you don’t want; things you can’t get rid
of; the one thing you can’t find that would
make your life complete. This current flows
from upscale showrooms to garage sales,
and through all of our own homes. Do we
want more, or do we want less? And who
can tell us what to do with the things that
we have? Enter Sally and Laurence Martin, owners of Studio Antiques, stage left,
with a flourish. This dynamic duo has the
knowledge, the research, and the interest
to appraise, in the words of that internet
meme, “All the Things.”
I sat outside the store with the Martins,
and they seemed to know everyone that
passed by Studio Antiques, which has
been located at 337 Richmond Street in
El Segundo since 1987. That’s the benefit
of being in business for 26 years, and
the Martins are a gregarious couple who
obviously enjoy saying hello. Laurence is
British, originally from Bournemouth and
still a fan of AFC Bournemouth, known
locally as the Cherries: kind of punk rock,
artistically ripped shirt, tendency to break
into his own language. Like if Keith Richards was in the appraising business. Sally
seems more of a down-home girl, knowing
the issues affecting the city, taking care of
the details with a kind smile and a bucket
of chitchat at the ready. They have been
married 21 years; they work together, they
travel together, and they are on TV together.

Obituaries
Linda (Frye) Green
Linda Green, born Linda Frye,
died at home in El Segundo on
Saturday, November 8, 2014
surrounded by family at the
age of 61.
Linda was born on July 27, 1953
in Long Beach, CA to Leroy and
Suzanne Frye. She graduated
from Hawthorne High School in
1971 and married Steve Green,
her high school sweetheart, in
1977. They moved from Hawthorne to El Segundo in 1996.
Her sons remember her as a
determined, energetic, and loving; a mother
who was very proud of their accomplishments.
Linda enjoyed walking, yoga, Disneyland,
BBQs, Bunco, Hawaii, and time with old friends.
She enjoyed time with her family, especially
her granddaughters and her
golden lab, Oakley.
Linda is survived by her
husband, Steve Green; her son
Shawn and his fiance Tara Krogstad; her son Ryan, his wife Emily,
and their two daughters Harper
and Finley. She is also survived
by her 5 younger brothers and
sisters, their spouses, and her
12 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are Saturday,
November 15, 2014 at Holy Cross
Mortuary at 5835 West Slauson
Avenue, Culver City, CA 90230. The wake is
the evening before, Friday November 14, 2014
from 3pm-8pm at Holy Cross. A reception
will follow. All are welcome to attend and
celebrate Linda’s life.•

enough for some people, but the Martins have
been making it work for decades.
Their first very successful TV job together was
on the A&E reality show Storage Wars, about
bidding on abandoned storage lockers and hoping to find something saleable. The Martins
were part of the expert appraisal team, and then
were offered roles in a show with a similar
premise called Baggage Battles. At first, Baggage
Battles went to airports and the Martins got
to buy suitcases and bags sight unseen, plastic
bags full of jewelry, or whatever unclaimed
items the airports had lying around. The
show expanded to other venues and it became
extremely popular, mostly outside the US. “It
was an adventure everywhere we went,” said
Laurence. The Martins have traveled across the
U.S., to London and other European venues,
to Toronto, and lately even to Johannesburg.
“Like Beatlemania,” added Laurence, reminiscing on the welcome he got in South Africa.
Then when the Martins come back home, the
fans return the favor with a visit of their own.
“The thing is, people come to El Segundo
from all over the world,” said Sally. Laurence

Spotlight on ESHS Club
“Support Our Troops”

For some high school students, Veterans Day
on Tuesday was simply a day that we got off
from school. For others it is a day that has
deep meaning, particularly for El Segundo High
School club members of Support Our Troops.
Noelle “Bellsy” Hale, a sophomore at ESHS,
founded Support Our Troops in association
with the non-profit organization Operation
Gratitude, whose mission is to bring comfort
to wounded veterans and currently deployed
servicemen and women through the assembling
and dispatching of care packages worldwide.
In order to fulfill this mission the club
holds donation drives to collect items for the
packages, and hosts letter-writing campaigns
to allow students and community members to
convey their gratitude to members of the military
through personal letters and care packages. Those
in uniform are deeply touched by receipt of
these packages and warm sentiments, including
ESHS alumni Kieran Roberts, who received
a Support Our Troops care package and was
excited to hear from us back here and was
very thankful for what we sent him.
Bellsy found the inspiration to begin the club
in her older brother Isaiah, a 2011 graduate of
ESHS, currently finishing his senior year at The
Bellsy Hale, founder and President of ESHS Support Our Troops.

King’s College in New York City, who will upon
graduation be immediately commissioned as a
Second Lieutenant in the United States Army.

Our highly paid city staff made a serious error
on the Water and Sewer Protest Ballots thus
mandating the issuing of new correct protest
ballots at taxpayer expense. The new return date
for these reissued correct protest ballots will
be sometime in late January or early February.

On the morning after the election, like
a common drunk, America woke up and
blinked its eyes. A shadow of its former self,
it emerged from a blind alley, and wondered
where the last six years had gone. Truly, it
was a binge of the highest order: Unlimited
spending and unlimited debt. World’s highest
income tax rates. Sky-bound regulations. Free
food. Subsidized car purchases. Free phones.
Housing subsidies. Unlimited money printing.
Government directed and funded healthcare.
Government spying on Americans. Government
spying on allies. Inept appointees administering
bloated bureaucracies. 92 million unemployed.
Part time and entry level jobs being touted
as “job growth.” The racial divide and the
gender divide growing. The chasm between
rich and poor exploding. Unrestricted illegal
immigration. Failed foreign policy.
The drunk tried to remember. Six years! Seemed
like everything was fuzzy and out of focus, a
scary movie that had somehow morphed into
reality. He tried to remember what he had
drank to get him into this stupor, but could
only remember some red-colored KoolAid. The
container’s label featured the smiling face of a
benign savior. Everything seemed so cool. So
reassuring. So, so politically correct. But now
the hang over must begin…. the piper must
be paid. Pass the aspirin and a soothing broth.

On Nov. 1 Brittany Maynard decided to end
her life with medication that was prescribed to
her by a doctor, and despite the tragedy of her
circumstances, I was comforted by the fact that
there at least some states in our country that
will facilitate such a decision. Maynard had a
brain tumor which doctors could do nothing
about so the outlook for the remaining years
of what natural life she had left was bleak.
So when Maynard decided to end her life
and die with dignity, her personal ordeal
became a national debate about the right to
end one’s life. Maynard and her family moved
to Oregon, where she would have access to
the state’s Death with Dignity Act. Under this
law, terminally ill Oregonians have the right to
end their lives by voluntary self-administering
a dose of life-ending medications. These
medications are prescribed by a physician.
Sadly I have experienced having a loved one
commit suicide; I have also witness a close
friend attempt suicide and the experiences were
both heartbreaking and scary. At the same
time I have seen people who are terminally
ill wither away into a painful and agonizing
death. Sadly these people did not have the
option to take the steps that the State of
Oregon provided for Maynard. It is worth
noting that to my knowledge, assisted suicide
was not something they considered. However,
watching them suffer and become a shell of
their former physical selves was too much.
Maybe I’m a coward. Or my faith in God
or a higher power is weak and hence I’m

Perhaps the aspirin could be a bipartisan
commission similar to the Military Base Closure
Commission, convened to comb through the
budget and list those programs that have
outgrown their usefulness, and whose costs
exceed their benefits. Congress could vote
on an up-or-down basis to eliminate waste.
Perhaps the broth could include ingredients
favored by both political parties. For example,
an energy policy that approved the Keystone
Pipeline, encouraged fracking and on-shore oil
exploration would drive down the cost of energy.
That policy would have four critical benefits:
First, it would create real jobs. Second, it would
lower the cost of living for all Americans.
Third, it would make American products more
cost competitive in the world market. Fourth,
it would reduce American dependence on
volatile Middle East oil suppliers.
Some of the benefits thus derived could be
used to support bonds to improve highways and
other infrastructure, and to support R&D to make
alternative energy sources more cost competitive
and more reliable . . . all without funding
private companies like Solyndra, and all without
raising income taxes or incurring more debt.
And so the drunk starts with a shower to
scrub off the detritus of his binge. Cleansed,
he lies back to wait for the aspirin and broth
to cure his aching head and rebelling stomach.
With eyes half closed he vows never to drink
from the Leftist KoolAid again. In the immortal
lyrics of Dandy Don Meredith, “Turn out the
lights, the party’s over.”

Assisted Suicide for the Terminally Ill

not enlightened enough to have such strong
convictions. However, despite the agony of
knowing that someone that you love took their
own life, watching someone you love suffer
as they await death is infinitely worse. There
is little that can convince that it is better for
someone with Parkinson’s Disease, who is on
a death timeline, should sit there and suffer
rather than die with dignity, if they desire.
I accept that some people will hold on to
their faith, or the strength that made them
amazing people when healthy and simply
wait for death to come. Yet, some of us
aren’t like that and there should be an option
for people like Maynard who would rather
avoid the agony of long hospital stays, the
inability to care for one’s self if in the end
death is unavoidable. I’m not questioning
the morality of this issue. Furthermore, it’s
not an attack on people of faith or their
convictions. The fact is that with or without
the right to assisted suicide provided by the
state like in Oregon, my peers of faith can
still decide to use their faith as they await
death in agonizing pain. However, without
the option on the table we are all made to
suffer even if we want a less painful and
faster solution.
My prayers go out to Maynard’s family and
my praise to the State of Oregon. Making such
a decision has to be gut-wrenching to say the
least, but if I’m down to my last year of life and
it is scheduled to be a painful one, I would like
the option of assisted suicide without having
to leave the comfort of my home state. •

Trade Kobe?

Any true basketball fan all but saw it coming.
Unless you’re a hopeless Los Angeles Lakers
apologist, you knew that the team was going
to be, well, not good this year. They certainly
haven’t let down. Let’s face it, the Lakers are
bad. Very bad. Maybe even worse than last
year’s bad which was an all-time franchise
record breaking bad. The Philadelphia 76ers
are pretty bad too, but it is known across the
league that they are trying to tank this year
in order to continue to build a team full of
young players that will, in two years, compete.
These Lakers, though, led by Kobe Bryant,
have already lost Steve Nash and one of their
brightest young stars, Julius Randle, for the
entire season. What does that leave? Kobe
attempting to carry a team of has-beens and
never-weres on his back through a minefield
that is the Western Conference of the NBA.
You can’t help but feel bad for the 16-time AllStar. With such a horrible future in sight and
certainly no championship aspirations on the
horizon barring a miracle or act of God, should
the Los Angeles Lakers trade Kobe Bryant?
Coming into this season all of the talk
surrounded Byron Scott as the new head coach
of the Lakers and how he was going to improve
the team on defense. Can we have Mike
D’Antoni back? So far, the Lakers have played
next to zero defense this years, most notably
having given up 127 points to the Golden State
Warriors, 119 points to the Phoenix Suns, and
over 110 points in every one of their first five
games this season except the home opener to
the Houston Rockets, in which they gave up
108 and lost by 18 points. The offense doesn’t
get much better. Sure, its early on in the season
and guys are still trying to find themselves, but

Eagles Water Polo Take League Title

On Tuesday, November 4th, in the longawaited game to determine the Ocean League
Championship, the Eagles overwhelmingly
took down the Vikings of Santa Monica by
a score of 9 to 3. As a matter of note, it has
been five years since El Segundo defeated
Santa Monica and won a league title. Riley
Brady was the coach and Beau Blacksten
was a player.
Opening the game, Joe Doucette scored
twice in succession to dampen the crowd
noise. Taking advantage of Viking turnovers
and ejections, Paul Bibas and Anthony Rotolo
each fired shots past the goalkeeper to close
the first period. After the second quarter
began, Santa Monica tallied once on an
outside shot from the wing. Then Anthony
Rotolo scooped up a rebound and slipped it
past the Viking goalkeeper.
El Segundo used their effective defense to close
down Santa Monica’s offensive efforts. Even
with Eagle players ejected, the defense clamped
down on the Viking attempts at the extra man
offense. El Segundo was simply better at that
aspect of the game. During that time the Eagles
added another goal. The score after three

Eagles get Defensive
about Ocean League Title

What could be better about a high school
football game. The El Segundo Eagles were
gunning for their first undefeated regular season
in 26 years and first Ocean League title. The
only team standing in their way of perfection
was a physical intimidating Santa Monica
Vikings team ready to be the spoiler. The last time El Segundo was in position to
go undefeated through the regular season was
the 1988 team. Players such as Eric Evans,
Rob White, Rob Croxall, Matt Wise, Jeremy
Carr and Donovan Gallatin helped spearhead
that perfect run.
The Eagles have been a high scoring team
along with one of the best underrated defenses
in the South Bay if not the entire CIF Southern
Section. The Vikings, on the other hand, have
an equally talented high profile defense to help
offset an offense led by a talented freshman
quarterback.
The game resembled David versus Goliath
and the Eagles had the powerful sling shot in
quarterback Lars Nootbaar’s arm. Wide-out
Nick Karsseboom delivered the knockout blow
with a 46 yard catch and run touchdown with
6:10 left in the fourth quarter. The Eagles had
overcome a 13-3 deficit in the fourth quarter and
won 17-13 with Karsseboom’s incredible catch.
Before the season started, the game on the
schedule most people were looking forward to
was the one against Santa Monica. They have
been one of the best teams in the Ocean League
for years. This is a team that has advanced to
the CIF playoffs in eight of the past 11 years
including this season. Eagle supporters were
certainly skeptical on how they would do
against a school with 3700 students (versus
1257 enrolled at El Segundo).
“They can only play 11 at a time,” said long
time assistant coach Jason Parker. “I’ll take the
heart of our 11 against anyone’s.”
This game was high on emotion on both
sidelines and spilled over into the stands. The
large crowd at Santa Monica College was
evenly divided by the large contingent of fans
from El Segundo and their hosts. Had it been
played at Hazletine Field it would have been
an overflow standing-room-only crowd.
The winner of this game would be Ocean
League champions. For the Eagles it would
mean their second consecutive outright league
crown. For the Vikings it would force a threeway tie with the Eagles and Lawndale. A coin
flip would have favored the Eagles entering the
playoffs as the top seed from the Ocean League.
“We didn’t want to share our league title
with anyone so we knew what was at stake,”
said Nootbaar.
The Vikings tested the El Segundo’s run
defense to open the first series of the game
but with linebackers Joey Garza, Jake Barone
and Jackson Walz on the prowl they stuffed
Zach Cooper for short gains. Then Walz and
Mike Villa sacked Isaiah Johnson for a big
loss to force a punt.
On the Eagles’ first drive Nootbaar directed
the Eagles on an 11-play drive that stalled at the
Viking’s 8-yard line. During the drive Nootbaar

found Miguel Wagner-Bagues for 38 yards and
Nootbaar kept the drive alive on a fourth and
10 with a 12-yard run. Jake Palmer gave the
Eagles a 3-0 lead with a 25-yard field goal.
On El Segundo’s next possession they found
out what type of vaunted defense the Vikings
had. The Eagles had yet to face the physical
talents and speed that Santa Monica possessed.
Nootbaar had thrown 174 consecutive passes
this season without an interception. He threw
a pass intended for Karsseboom that was
tipped and intercepted by All-Ocean League
defensive back Corde Sweet. Sweet returned
the ball 73 yards for a touchdown. Dewayne
Polk blocked the PAT and the Eagles found
themselves trailing 6-3.
The defense for El Segundo has been so good
that they’ve given up just 48 points all season
long during their first nine games. Santa Monica
methodically moved the ball down field during
an extended 12-play drive that was capped by
a touchdown pass from Johnson to Sweet to
give the Vikings a 13-3 halftime lead.
The Eagles had found themselves with
their largest deficit of the year. It was an
uncomfortable feeling but Eagle head coach
Steve Shevlin challenged his team and the
adversity they faced in the second half. “I just
told them to stay withy our game plan and
leave it all on the field,” he said.
The third quarter went scoreless and the
Eagles were in a scoring drought. They had
yet to go scoreless in consecutive quarters or
score at least one touchdown in the first three
quarters of a game this season. Things would
on another. Ryan Kelly picked up a first down
and a pass interference call against the Vikings
moved the ball to their 6-yard line. From there

dramatically change in the fourth quarter and
a bit of history was about to be made. Leading 13-3 late in the third quarter Santa
Monica’s ground game was to be tested and
with it the turning point of the game. On fourth
and short near mid-field the Vikings decided to
go for the first down. Johnson took the snap
and attempted to push for a first down but
Duncan Papalii and Mike Villa stuffed him
for a loss and the Eagles took over at the their
own 49 yard line.
Nootbaar then demonstrated why he’ll be
named the MVP of the Ocean League. He

Nootbaar used his speed on a bootleg to get
into the end zone and cut their deficit to 13-10.
The Vikings went with their rushing game
and had moved the ball to the 50 yard line with
6:55 remaining in the game. On fourth and five
the Vikings decided to go for a first down but
the Eagles came up huge. With Johnson being
chased by Polk he passed towards Sweet but
the pass was broken up by Midgey Hale and
the Eagles took over.
One thing that has stood out this season
has been a big play after a defensive stand
and this time was no different. Kelly picked
up four tough yards on the first play and then
Nootbaar found Karsseboom in stride behind
the Vikings secondary for a 46-yard touchdown
catch and a 17-13 lead.
On Santa Monica’s next possession the
Vikings were moving the ball well. But Polk’s
sack of Johnson all but ended any hopes of a
comeback. On fourth and 22 at the 50 yard
line and trailing 17-13 with 4:34 remaining the
Vikings punted their hopes away. From there
Nootbaar and Wagner-Bagues ran the clock out
and El Segundo had done the unthinkable, a
perfect run through the Ocean League. After the handshake between the two teams
the entire Eagle’s team rushed over to thank
their supporters in the bleachers in a classy
show of appreciation. “They’ve been there for
us all year long and they believed in what we
could do so we (the team) wanted to thank

How to Cut the Clutter and Take Back Your Home
(BPT) - You’ve reached your
breaking point. You’ve tripped over
the same thing in the living room
too many times. Now you’ve picked
it up to finally put it away and you
realize - you have nowhere to put it.
You have too much clutter in your
home. So what do you do? How
do you decide where to start so
you can reduce the clutter in your
home and make your walkways safe
once more?
Getting started is easier than you
think. If you want to take control
of clutter, get a few boxes - start
with one for each room in your
home and begin organizing one
room at a time.
Begin this initiative by removing
everything on top of your cabinets,
tables and in bookcases, and then
place it all in a box, says Keith
McCleary, academic director of
Interior Design at The Art Institute
of York - Pennsylvania. If there
are other random accessories in
the room, remove those, too. Keep just the
basic furnishings. Now sit with the room in
its simplest form for a short time.
“In room design, make good decisions
about what you choose to put in the room
and, often more importantly, in what you
choose to leave out,” McCleary says.
“Simplicity and clean lines make a room
feel livable, and that’s what it’s really all
about: comfortable living.” Think about the
kind of focal point you’re trying to create.
How should you orchestrate this space and
show off your special pieces in terms of
size, scale, color and texture?
After a day or two has passed, go back to
the box and look for items that define your
personality, or will be noticed by guests
visiting your home. “Ask yourself: when
is enough, enough?” says McCleary. “Each
piece of furniture in the room can function
to complement. Accessories and works of
art should contrast.”
When you look at your well-designed
room, you should see positive elements, as
well as appreciate the possibility for negative space by removing unnecessary pieces
that don’t add to the design composition.

of York - Pennsylvania are taught to help
their clients step back and ask themselves:
Is it finished now? You can
err when you go shopping and
purchase nice pieces for your
home, because before long you
may have accumulated too many
of those nice things. Take a hard
look at some of those things
you don’t really want or need;
it might be time to share that
stuff with your local Goodwill.
Sometimes, you might think
you have to keep memorabilia
or outdated gifts from Aunt
Ethel in your home all the time.
“Not so,” says McCleary. “It’s
perfectly acceptable to remove
those items when you do your
box exercise.” If you get a call
from Auntie when she plans her
next visit, head to the attic and
put those old Beanie Babies she
gave you when you were a fanatical collector decades ago on a
shelf in your den - temporarily.
She’ll be happy for the gesture.
When she leaves, feel free to
put them back in the box of memories until
her next visit.
After you complete this exercise in each
room in your home, you’ll notice that the
clutter has disappeared. Now you can recognize how attractive the remaining items
are in that same space. This initiative takes
determination and focus, but when you’ve
completed the exercise, your focus can be
on the lovely space you’ve recreated. •

relying on Carlos Boozer and Jeremy Lin just
isn’t going to put this team into the playoffs. It’s
hard to see things getting much better for these
Lakers. Their first matchup of the year against
a non-playoff contender comes on November
28th when they face off against the Minnesota
Timberwolves. What happens before then is a
mystery. A very ugly, dreadful mystery. So, is
it wrong to start at least discussing the option
of trading Kobe Bryant?
Think about it in these terms. Mr. Bryant
wants very badly to achieve what Michael
Jordan did. The ever-so-elusive sixth NBA
championship ring. There is no way that Kobe
gets that sixth ring with the Los Angeles Lakers
with only two years remaining on his basketball
life clock. A man that is so dedicated to the
game of basketball; who bleeds, dreams, sweats
basketball on a more competitive level than
any player we’ve seen since Jordan, deserves
a better send off than this, right? Sure, the guy
has experienced the highlights of his career
already and has five championship rings as it
is, but is it really fair to allow us all to sit back
and watch as one of the greatest players to ever
play the game struggles through health issues
on a team that is almost allergic to winning?
Much of this debate depends on whether or
not you are a Kobe Bryant fan or an L.A. Laker
fan. Naturally, if you’re a Kobe fan you want
to see him stay and finish off a 20-year NBA
career all in one uniform. If you’re a Laker
fan though, it might make sense to trade him
away and clear up that $25 million per season
off the books, get a package of young players
and draft picks, and start building toward the
future already. A much brighter, more optimistic
future, I might add. Life without Kobe is coming
eventually. There will be a time when he is
not a Los Angeles Laker anymore and fans
of the team are going to have to learn to say
goodbye at some point. In this case, the sooner
the better. It’s like getting out of relationship
that you know won’t work or go the distance.
Maybe you’re comfortable with everything as
is. But at what point do you start to consider
the future and make a decision that is going
to make you the most happy right now?
Naturally, there are reasons that this just won’t
happen. There may never be a player in the league
again who will have the opportunity to play every
single season of a long and tenuous NBA
career with one team. Also, even with as bad
as the Lakers have been over the past couple
of years, their ticket prices are still the fourthhighest in the NBA this year. Kobe Bryant is
the show. He’s what people pay to come and
see. Without him, the Lakers would be the Utah
Jazz or something of that sort. in alignment with
that, television rating would suffer here in Los
Angeles with no Kobe Bryant. That wouldn’t
be good for business after just recently striking
a $4 billion deal with Time Warner Cable. The
Lakers have always been fun to watch, even
when they weren’t good. Eddie Jones, Nick
Van-Exel and Vlade Divac most notably come
to mind. With no Kobe, this year would just
be plain pathetic for everyone involved.
When it comes down to it, moving on past the
Lakers is really something that Kobe Bryant will
have to decide for himself. The Lakers won’t
just outright trade someone like Kobe, he will
have to ask, beg and plead for it to happen.
Just recently, Bryant told the media that he
has no interest in going anywhere. Knowing
his competitive edge, he is probably telling the
truth. Kobe would obviously love to end his
career alongside the very few likes of Magic
Johnson, Larry Bird and Tim Duncan who will
all have spent the entirety of their careers with
just one team. If that’s something that Kobe
wants though, he had better be prepared for
some of the ugliest years of his career to come.
But hey, at least he’s still got records to break. •

CIF Playoffs
The El Segundo boys’ water polo team ran
the table and won the Ocean League. The
third seeded Eagles opened the CIF Southern
Section Division IV playoffs at home (Mira
Costa) against the winner of the Brentwood/
Atascadero game today at 3pm. The winner
advances to play the winner of the Glendale/
Sonora match on Saturday at a site TBA.
The girls’ volleyball team advanced to the
CIF-SS 3AA playoffs and traveled to La Mirada
this past Tuesday. Should they win they would
most likely host J.W. North (Riverside) tonight. The boys’ cross country team won the Ocean
League eking out a three point victory over
Santa Monica. Gavin Glynn ran an inspired race
finishing second while Nolan Sharp (6), Nick
Ostler (7), Scott Willis (9), Evan O’Connor ,
Oliver Chen (20) and Daniel Gutierrez (21)
will all qualify for the CIF prelims Saturday
at Mt SAC. •

As a Junior Ambassador for Operation
Gratitude this year Bellsy founded Support
Our Troops, and has recruited members
for the club. She is pleased to report the
response has been very encouraging. One of
the essential requirements to earning a Gold
Award in the Girl Scouts is that the stated
goal, regardless of how impressive it may be,
will only qualify if is sustainable beyond a
one-time event. In Bellsy’s case this means
that in order for her actually earn the award,
she will not only have engage and oversee
the letter writing and donation drives, but will
have to clearly demonstrate to Girls Scouts’
officials that Support Our Troops will remain
viable after she has moved on from ESHS.
To this end, Bellsy is working to ensure the
selection of capable, committed officers, who
will approach the cause with her same level
of zeal once she has graduated. If you would
like to join the club they meet Wednesdays in
B203, and/or if you would like to contribute
letters or items for the care packages please
drop supplies to Support Our Troops at ESHS
Wednesdays in B203.
Boxes for donations will soon go into the
classrooms for the first drive of year just after
the Thanksgiving holiday, but at any time please
send in donations to room B203. Bellsy tells
me that the items most appreciated are “Items
socks, lip balm, toothpaste, toothbrushes, hand
and foot warmers, energy bars, beef jerky, trail
mix, hard candies, and wipes.” In addition, it
is always easy to write letters; it is a wonderful
family activity that we do in our home where
we spend a family hour writing letters to the
troops. Perhaps over our Thanksgiving holiday
spend some time giving thanks by writing
letters that can be included in the ESHS care
packages. Bellsy tells me that “letters should
be put in envelopes unsealed. In the letters you
can start out with “Dear hero” or “Dear service
member” and talk about current events back
here i.e. sports, weather, music, and movies.
You can talk a little about yourself, what you
like to do. Try to avoid talking about politics or
religion, but you can of course say something
like “you’re in my prayers.” It is also nice to
include your thankfulness for their service.”
All donations and letters would be greatly
appreciated as El Segundo comes together to
show gratitude for those serving to protect our
freedom. I am going to to pledge to write 25
letters over the Thanksgiving holiday- would
anyone like to join me?

Francisco, then swung out to Las Vegas
and the Grand Canyon. Next stop? Studio
Antiques. Anna and Tom were very excited
to see the Martins and many photos were
taken on everyone’s phones.
The Martins were as friendly as could be.
Tom and Laurence discussed lutefisk, their
common knowledge of German, and whether
Baggage Battles was dubbed or subtitled in
Norway (turns out it’s subtitled). Sally and
Anna hugged one another. “It’s so nice,” said
Sally, to see these friendly faces and hear
their stories. Some fans bring the Martins
gifts or mementos, and the Martins treat
them with kindness and show them around
the shop. “They go to Disneyland,” said
Laurence, “and then they come here.” It’s
quite an accomplishment, to be recognizably
famous but also accessible enough that the
fans feel comfortable showing up at Studio
Antiques just to say hello.
The store has something for everyone: it’s
crammed from floor to ceiling with items of
all kinds and shapes, from records to light
fixtures to casseroles to jewelry. Next door is
the “World Gallery,” where Laurence showcases larger items he’s found overseas. The
Martins have many avenues for sale, thanks
to the internet: besides the brick-and-mortar
store, they have a website with a catalog and

their honesty, and disdain stores that try to
cheat the customer by offering a false price
or not doing their homework. “The thing that
we bring to the table that no one else does
is the research,” said Sally.
The Martins can call on a vast network
of experts to appraise any item, and they
love to ferret out origins, maker’s marks,
and whatever else can fetch the best price
possible. Not everything is worth a mint,
of course, but the Martins will go the extra
mile to make sure. Their eBay sales make up
80% of the store’s business, so the Martins
are constantly on the lookout for clients who
may have a treasure on hand and need an
expert eye. They also will appraise estate
items and run estate sales. Each revenue
stream contributes to the overall business
model, which is to take in items, but also
to get them out the door in a fair manner.

is reserving judgment until the spaces have
been here a few more weeks, was worried
that people might drive on by if they can’t

with something from Studio Antiques, and
each person who drives on by is a loss. As
we spoke about parking, a woman came
out of the depths of the store with a flat,

it to put a plant on; Sally told her it was a

Rumba is an apricot Poodle who loves her walks and cuddles.
Troy and his brother Tyrese love to snuggle with friends.

Troy, Tyrese and Little Ricky are three
adorable high energy little boys who love to
romp around together and with their fellow
foster kittens. Troy and Tyrese have striking coats of
ebony with adorable soft green eyes. They
love to sleep on the bed as well as snuggle
on your lap or in your arms. If they aren’t
busy making biscuits on you, these beautiful
little brothers will follow you from room to
room just to be near you. Both Troy and
Tyrese get along with the small dogs in their
foster home and enjoy chattering away to
anyone and everyone nearby. They would
be very lonely by themselves, so they cannot
be only kitties. Although Troy and Tyrese
would adore being adopted together, they
can be adopted separately into a home with
another feline friend or with one of their
other kitten buddies.
Little Ricky has a very loving personality.
He is extremely playful, sweet, loves to
cuddle, and enjoys being held. Petting him
while looking at your smart phone doesn’t
count and he’ll push the phone out of your
hand so you’ll give him your undivided
attention. Ricky will run to the door to greet
you, and he’ll follow you around the house.
With the amount of energy Little Ricky has,
he would do well in a home looking for a
cat that has dog-like personalities who will
run and play with him. His favorite toys
are strings, balls or crumpled up paper, and
feathers. Little Ricky has been fostered in a
home with two calm and well-behaved dogs.
He loves following them around swatting
at their wagging tails. Little Ricky is your
“personality plus” kitten.
These kittens are available for adoption
through Kitten Rescue, one of the largest cat
rescue groups in Southern California. All of
our kitties are spayed/neutered, microchipped,
tested for FeLV and FIV, dewormed and

only challenge was being born without teeth,
hence the name Gummi Bear. His new family
looked right past that to see his inner sweetness

Bear. Yes, we’re keeping his name - it’s too
cute to change. He has had a few accidents
but nothing we can’t figure out. He’s getting
tons of love and exercise. He’s been to the
dog park, dog beach, and every night at 5 our
community has a meet up dog area. He loves
it and he’s not afraid of any size dog. He
thinks everyone is his best pal. So funny! The
kids are so loving their new little man. They
wear each other out. It’s been great! He’s a
perfect fit to our family. We can’t believe we
got so lucky in finding him. Thank you for
all your help. We will touch base with you if
we have any more questions. Thanks again

Mama Cass is a really nice little girl
and a good mom to her puppies, Dharma
and Sticks. She is sweet, friendly, gives lots
of kisses and has a very bright sparkling
personality. It’s hard not to fall in love with
her the instant you meet her. We can’t say
enough good things about this little girl and
her lovely demeanor and personality. She is
completely housebroken and is good with other
little dogs as well. At only 5 pounds, Mama
Cass would be best with children over 6 due
to her small size. Mama Cass will be spayed,
is current on vaccinations, and microchipped.
Darling Dharma and her sweet brother
be 4 - 5 months old. Hula has a beautiful
golden coat with a white blaze on her chest
and two white socks on her front feet. Her
tail wags so much it makes her body wiggle
back and forth just like a little Hula dancer. Hula is very playful, is good with all the other
doggies here at the rescue and has lots of
puppy energy. She is very lovable, a quick
learner and will be a great addition to any
home. Hula will be spayed soon, is current
on vaccinations, and microchipped.

loving care from the day they were born. Both pups can be seen by appointment only
with an approved application. They are
ready to go home, but will need to remain
in our relative area of the South Bay or
North Orange County due to our spay/neuter
ordinance. (They may be adopted separately.)
