Vol.12, No.23 November 11 .2014 Highlights Milk prices drop in most markets due to high supply. High prices of irish potatoes registered in Mbale market due to high transport costs. Plenty of maize grain was supplied in Soroti market. Prices of millet grain and flour in Lira market reduce due to high supply. Commodity Highlights The prices of apple bananas and Cavendish Bogoya have increased in Iganga and Soroti markets mainly because of the reduced supply on the market for this commodity thus leading to the hike in the prices for example in Iganga market the price for apple bananas increased byshs.200 on wholesale and shs.300 on retail whereas the Cavendish Bogoya increased by shs.300 wholesale and shs.500 on retail and the traders attributed the price increment to the high demand of the commodities in the market yet the supply is limited. On the same note as we come close to the festive season most of the commodity prices are seen to take up an upward trend mainly because of the anticipation by the sellers and buyers of the increase in most market prices. Dry Beans The price of Agwede beans in Mbale market increased due to high needs from bulk buyers bringing about high demand in the area leading to farmers increasing the price as demand increases. Yet in Iganga market, the prices of Yellow beans dropped by shs.150 and shs.200 on wholesale and retail prices. Traders attribute the decrease to high supply and low demand by consumers as traders had purchased in plenty in the assembly markets. Dry Fermented Cassava Owino market registered an increase of shs 100 and shs 200 on the wholesale and retail prices respectively because of low supply of the commodity. This was because of the high rainfall that slowed down the drying of the cassava and also the demand of the commodity in the market was high. The demand was higher than the supply of the commodity in the market and so traders sold at a higher price so as to gain profits. The scarcity of the meat has led to Fish and chicken prices hike due to the high demand in the area. In Mbale market the catch for the Tilapia fish was good from the sites of lake Kyoga, sizes varied from shs.13000down to shs,10000. The consumers were mainly from the hotels and the prices are expected to go further with the constant rains these days. Cow Peas The supply of cow peas in Iganga market increased resulting into a drop of shs 250 and shs 200 on the wholesale and retail prices respectively. Traders in the market attributed the price decline to the high harvests of farmers in the area. Many farmers supplied high volumes of cow peas in the market assembly yet there were few buyers in the market.
