Another New Finish Time
As you would be aware, we changed our school finishing time this
year from 3:05pm to 3:00pm to fall in line with the expectations
of the 2012 Enterprise Bargaining Agreement for all government
schools regarding the amount of instruction or teaching time.
Since then the Department of Education and Child Development
(DECD) has again clarified some anomalies with the interpretation
that had been occurring with the definition of required break and
meal times for staff.
As a result of this clarification, Greenwith Primary School will be
adjusting our school day again. At the meeting held on October
th
16 2014 the Governing Council was advised of the reasons and
need for changing the finishing time of the school day.
This change will result in a 10 minute increase in play time for
students at lunch. Children will have 40 minutes to play rather
than the current 30 minutes at lunch. This is in addition to the 10
minutes set aside for eating lunch.
As teachers do a yard duty every day, they will now receive at
least the required 20 minute lunch break. The amount of
instruction time will remain the same.
As of Term 1 2015, at Greenwith Primary School students will be
dismissed at 3:10pm instead of 3:00pm. The official start time
will remain at 8:50am with classrooms opened at 8:45am. A bell
will sound at 3:10pm to acknowledge the end of school.
Our Lady of Hope Catholic School work under a different
Enterprise Bargaining Agreement. They are still deciding whether
or not they will also increase their lunch play time and/or adjust
their finishing time. Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) supervision
will occur as usual.
I apologise for another change. Hopefully this is the last one
needed for quite a while.
Year 4/5 Camp
Last week, I had the privilege of attending the biannual 2 day Year
4/5 camp at Mylor. The activities offered by the instructors were
really well planned, engaging and fun (especially the flying fox
and giant swing that I got to go on with my group). Learning can
happen in many settings and thanks to the good will of the
teachers involved, I am proud that Greenwith continues to offer
camps on a regular basis.
Thanks to Nadene Staporski, Dani Schina, Bev Poppleton, Vera
Deluca, Mike Stott and Lausanne Cheers for giving up their after
hours time and for all their work in making the camp happen.
Overall I was really pleased with the attitude and behaviour of
the 140 students who attended. They demonstrated all of the
CORE values we expect at Greenwith.
Kind regards
Rick Bennallack

Happy World Teacher’s Day
It takes a special person
To teach a child in class
To just keep his attention
In a world that moves so fast
To show a child he is unique
With talents deep inside
To help to build his confidence
So he can beam with pride
To show a little patience
For a child who's lost his way
To a child who feels abandoned
Who has seen better days
To inspire and to motivate
So a child can learn and grow
To go into this big wide world
That has its highs and lows
You are a special person
You always give your best
And for every child that has your class
Their life is truly blessed

On Tuesday October 21st, Greenwith Primary competed in the North East District Hiragana Competition at Open
Access College at Marden. Our team of Thomas N, Sarah F, Phoebe A and Hannah T did a wonderful job, up against
very tough competition. Our team was also mostly made up of Year 6s which made it even more outstanding as
most schools were primarily Year 7s. Out of the 7 schools, Greenwith came 4th, missing out on joint 3rd by just 1
point. This competition is quite intense with each competitor having to stand up in front of a room of people and
compete against a person from another school to be the first one to read and say the Japanese characters and
words.
Congratulations must also go to Thomas N for winning the tournament round of the KATSU Japanese reading game,
based on strategy. He was the last person standing out of the 28 students there. Well done Thomas! At the end of
the competition, all students had a snack of sushi and received a small gift and certificate.
I am so proud of our students for being confident (even though they were very nervous) and showing off their
Japanese reading skills that they have worked so hard on. These students have given up some lunch times as well
as taking on extra work at home to get to this competition. They showed the Greenwith pride by having all of our
CORE values on display at all time. Awesome work team!

Remembrance Cross
Last year I applied to the ANZAC Day Commemoration Fund and won a grant to upgrade our Remembrance
Cross. With the funding we purchased especially made pavers engraved with past and current conflicts
involving Australian Forces to put around the cross. The cross is located near the ramp leading to the oval.
A huge thank you to Sean Matheson from Urban Virons for laying the pavers. We would also like to
acknowledge the Government of South Australia for providing the commemorative funding. We are just
waiting for the delivery of a bronze statue of a soldier and the garden will be complete. Also many thanks
to those families who purchased a paver in memory of their loved ones who served Australia in time of war,
armed conflict or in International Peacekeeping operations. The Cross of rosemary and the engraved
pavers will forever be visual reminders of the significance of Anzac Day, Remembrance Day and our nation’s
military heritage.
