National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Arroyo Seco Junior High School ―We lead, others follow‖ Partnership Middle School Seco Gram ________________________________________________________________________ From the Principal: Welcome to the second quarter! The school year is going by quickly. Students received their Quarter 2 schedules on Monday, October 20 thanks to the help from our many wonderful parent volunteers. I hope by now you have already viewed your child’s Quarter 1 report card on Infinite Campus. This is the most time efficient and up-to-date way to monitor your child’s progress. If you are still unable to access your parent portal using IC, please contact our librarian, Sarah Goodwin, in the library or by e-mail at: [email protected] I’d like to take this opportunity to offer a few suggestions to ensure your youngster’s academic success. Many middle school students struggle with organization. Help them by having a weekly planning meeting, perhaps 15 minutes each Sunday evening. Sit down with your child to discuss upcoming assignments and tests and then together agree on a schedule for completion. This helps your child learn time management and will make the week go smoothly for the entire family. Use the Binder Reminder provided by the school as a planning tool. Make sure your child is writing all assignments down and that you are checking it regularly – daily if necessary until they demonstrate competence and at least weekly to let your child know you are interested in their education. Encourage them to make checklists of tasks to complete and help them organize the steps involved in long-range projects. Check your child’s backpack frequently. Have them bring only the school supplies they will need. Everything else is excess baggage and will not help them either get, or stay, organized. Be sure your youngster is getting plenty of sleep. At this age, they still need at least 9 to 10 hours of sleep per night. Studies show that students suffering from lack of sleep cannot concentrate, retain information or behave satisfactorily. Sleep deprivation can cause behaviors that are often mistaken for Attention Deficit Disorder. Monitor your child’s television, cell phone and computer time and habits. Internet access can be a wonderful educational tool, but it can also present a real danger for vulnerable minors. Let your child know that you will be monitoring their text messaging and internet activity including social websites such as ―Facebook‖ because you care about them. These forms of communication are not confidential and often lead to hurt feelings, peer conflicts and unnecessary ―drama‖ on campus. Unfortunately, some students carelessly say mean things and even threaten other students via social media. They are often unaware that this is a criminal activity and can involve law enforcement and serious consequences. Communicate with your child’s teachers and counselor. Let them know you are supportive and want to be involved in their academic progress. Decide together what system of home-to-school communication will be most effective, i.e.: email, work or home phone, notes in Binder Reminder, etc. We want to work with you to ensure success for your student. Finally, enjoy these middle years because they go by quickly. Soon, you will be the parent of an independent successful young adult. And as always, please feel free to contact me or any of the staff members here at Arroyo Seco if we can assist you through these exciting years. Rhondi Durand, Principal Issue Number 2 November, December 2014 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Counselor’s Corner Open-Door Communication A conversation starts. Your child’s upset. You’re tired. Pretty soon, the conversation heats into an argument. It ends when a door slams, followed by silence. Arguments. We’ve all had them with our children. Sometimes it may feel like most conversations end with slammed doors. Though it can be challenging to develop the skills, being available for frequent, in-depth conversations is an important role we play in our children’s lives—from the time they learn to talk all the way into adulthood. What we have to do is create an atmosphere of communication— an open door. The trick with open-door communication is that we often don’t realize we create invisible closed doors around us. We get preoccupied and don’t pay enough attention. We’re exhausted, and we nod off as our child is in midsentence. We jump to conclusions before our child says things. We assume the worst. We criticize our kids for what they tell us, so they close the door the next time out of fear or resentment. Sometimes there is no communication to begin with, and it’s hard to get your child to say what’s going on in her or his life. Having an open door means having an open mind, an open attitude. It means listening to understand, not to advocate our position. It means being available when our children need us— and when they don’t. It means taking good care of ourselves so that when our children want to talk, we have open ears and an open heart. Helpful Hints Tips that make it easier to communicate positively with your child: Watch for hints: A child who hangs around usually wants to talk. Don’t contradict what you say by doing the opposite. Be available, be open, be willing to drop what you’re doing in order to talk. Talk in the car when you’re side by side, rather than face to face. Time Together Three ways to improve communication with your child: 1.) Ask caring questions such as: How did band practice go? How was the math test? Was the talent show fun? 2.) Ask your child’s advice or opinion about an important matter. 3.) If there is a problem at work and you come home upset, let your child know that you are not angry with her or him. 2014-2015 School Year PRINCIPAL’S HONOR ROLL 8th Grade – 1st Quarter (*Students with a 4.0 GPA throughout both 7th and 8th grade) 4.0 GPA *Amy Acevedo *Kennedy Agron Alexa Aguilar *Phoebe Ahn Amanda Alfaro *Jack Anschultz *Jessica Arnone *Kyle Bair Finn-Christian Baker *Alyxandra Bartolovich *Molly Black *Olivia Boron *Jenna Bushton *Chikara Carpenter *Jacqueline Cascione *Anays Clavijo *Kaleigh Crawford *Jenna Culotta *Kyle Davidson *Sophia Davies *Lauren Doan Kaitlin Dunnahoo *Bailey Earhart *Sarah Elaebrak *Clarissa Ellwein Brecken Enneking Robert Ferialdi *Zachary Fineberg *Ryan Flaharty Sean Flaharty *Elizabeth Ford *Tyler Ganim *Cailin Garcia Myles Garrett Madison Gass Sydney Grate *Ashley Griffith Angela Grisanti 4.0 GPA cont’d. *Elizabeth Groscost Breanna Guzman *Alexandra Hill Tabassum Hossain *Tyler Hovey Madeline Johns Eric Johnson Madison Karzin *Joshua Lam Alyssa Longwill *Connor Loo Vanessa Lopez *Carrie MacLearn *Evan Maich *Riley Maiden *Kayla Medof *Samantha Mendoza Nataly Miranda *Justin Morsch Kathryn Mularky Lubwama Musasizi Antonio Navarrete *Ariana Olivan *Ashley Orozco *Alexander Phan *Camden Powell Jacob Powell Kristian Rascon *Amanda Reyes *Tana Risley Ethan Roush *Abigail Rutherford *Claire Schlaman Matthew Schwartz *Melissa Short Justin Sims 4.0 GPA cont’d. *Tiffany Solis Michelle Sun *Shani Tyson *Caroline Uhrig *Matthew Vanca Caitlyn Varsam *Valeria Vazquez Joanna Veres *Juliet Vianzon *Michael Watson *Nicholas Wenstad *Thomas Westenhofer Julia Wheeler *Nicholas Whitman *Brooke Whyte Alexander Wiesen *Marissa Williams *Andrea Wingenroth Justin WireduAgyepong *Nataline Ziola 3.83 GPA Jillian Abreu Najah Ali Skyeler Antonino Alyssa Arce Frank Balena Emma Benitez Alana Berens Riley Birchfield Madeline Bisacchi Ashlyn Canel John Cashin Steven Cespedes Matthew Cho Jared Chorpash 3.83 GPA cont’d. Now that school is in full swing the Attendance Office would like to remind all our parents and guardians of a few things that will assist everyone in ensuring that your child is able to maximize their learning time here at Arroyo Seco. 1) The easiest ways to excuse absences are with a quick phone call to the school or a note brought to the Attendance Office. 2) If you send a note to school with your child to excuse an absence or authorize an early dismissal for a doctor/dental appointment please have your child take that note to the Attendance Office, NOT a team teacher. 3) No parents or guardians should be meeting their child during nutrition, lunch, or between classes without having first checked in with the Attendance Office and obtaining a visitor’s pass. 4) After two (2) weeks, ―Unverified‖ absences will become ―Unexcused‖ absences and may cause your child to be assigned consequences at school. Phoning the Attendance Office or sending in a note with your child can easily clear these absences. 5) Remember that school starts at 7:45 AM. Please help us ensure that your child gets to school on time and is ready to learn! 6) Our automated telephone system will call you if your child has missed two (2) or more classes and has been marked ―Unverified‖. Please feel free to call the Attendance Office if you receive a phone call that you believe is an error. We would be more than happy to assist you clear up any confusion. If you have any questions concerning your son’s or daughter’s attendance or need clarification on any of our attendance policies, please call our attendance technician, June Higgins. She is always happy to assist you! 7th Grade Aloha (Mrs. Klipfel, Mr. Oatey, Mr. Stewart, Ms. West, Mrs. Oatey) Team Aloha has settled into the start of a great school year. We have enjoyed meeting all of your children and teaching them through this first quarter. In history class we just concluded our Islam and Africa unit and next we will be covering the Civilizations of the Americas – Aztecs, Incas and Mayas. We had exciting geography challenge tournaments in all four of our Team Aloha classes this week. In science we started out with a study of the nature of science, how science is done in the real world. We are now knee-deep into our unit on cells, beginning our study of the organelles that make a cell function. In English the students recently finished the novel Star Girl and have now focused on reading short stories. Math students continue their study of fractions and have applied their fraction knowledge to their Fraction Recipe Project. We are all looking forward to a successful second quarter. Please remember that we offer study club for our students four days a week, Monday and Wednesday at lunch and Tuesday and Thursday after school. Extreme (Mrs. Choate, Mr. Elliott, Mr. Lederman, Mrs. Mahoney) Team Extreme welcomed the year with an outstanding effort during the fundraiser. We ordered new Extreme t-shirts and will take a team field trip to go bowling in November. Team Extreme wants to remind you of our website. http://7thgradeteamextreme.weebly.com/ You can find helpful information about our team as well as the WEEKLY HOMEWORK CALENDAR link. During this quarter in English we learned about acceptance and the importance of nonconformity. We also studied how to use context clues and inferences in the reading process. Quarter two we will write an essay about acceptance, and we will be exploring the theme of taking risks. First quarter Science was the time to observe tiny objects with microscopes and delve into the world of cells. We built models and created foldable projects. Quarter two we will be learning about genetics and creating our own paper pet families. For the first quarter in World History and Geography we learned about the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire and the lasting contributions of both. We also learned about Islam and the great African empires of Ghana and Mali. To begin the year in Math 7 we discovered how INTEGERS and FRACTIONS can be used in the real world. The students completed a Math Recipe Project where they doubled, halved and quadrupled a recipe. Fusion (Mr. Dannerth, Mrs. Malneck, Mr. Nez, Mr. Stuart, Mrs. Chase) In science we will continue moving through the cell and cell division. Students will be learning how to use a microscope along the way. English students started the year by working on plot and theme development in literature. We then applied these skills as we read Papa’s Parrot, The Night the Bed Fell, The Third Level and Jerry Spinelli’s Stargirl. We also honed our context clues skills to further enhance our reading ability and vocabulary development. As we head into the second quarter we will be focusing more on expository writing and research, paying particular attention to structure and MLA citations. Lastly, in the approaching weeks we will also be studying the ―Hero’s Journey‖ pattern of storytelling which will unlock a new and fascinating way for students to analyze literature while they continue their own journey toward mastering the seventh grade Common Core Standards. Fusion math has just finished up their work with rational numbers. We are now moving on to working with ratios, proportions, and unit rates. This unit is exciting as it lends itself to many real-world applications! Genesis (Mrs. Larochelle, Mrs. Nez, Mr. Tracy, Mrs. Van Shura) In science students have been learning about the cell and its organelles. Second quarter we will continue with the cell learning about the cell cycle. We will spend some time with science safety and genetics. We have also been working on our weekly prefix/suffix words. Students have completed the first 30 on their list and will continue each week until 50 have been completed. They will be quizzed on all 50 definitions just after Thanksgiving vacation. In history we studied and analyzed the causes and effects of the vast expansion and ultimate disintegration of the Roman Empire, and analyzed the geographic, political, economic, religious and social structures of the civilizations of Islam and Africa during the Middle Ages. Quarter two brings the study of Meso America, China and Japan. In Math 7 we will be working on ratios and proportional reasoning and how it applies to real life scenarios. In English we looked at the idea of ―acceptance‖ during the first quarter by seeing how it is used as a common theme in short stories, poetry, and essays. We will be moving into mythology during the second quarter and we will be reading The Odyssey in class. We will also start using Accelerated Reader this quarter, so be sure to check to see that your child has a book that is on the AR list. Team Genesis enjoyed a school/team building activity by attending Skate Night at the Ice Station in September with Team Fusion. 8th Grade Odyssey (Mr. Fodor, Mrs. Ford, Mrs. Koegle, Ms. Suazo) I thank the students for having a very successful 1st quarter. It was tough material starting out but the hard work will pay off later in the year. This quarter we will be focusing heavy on linear equations and functions. Good job Odyssey math students! In history, students will be learning about the American colonists declaring independence from England and the major battles of the American Revolution. We will then be looking at the first constitution of the United States, the Articles of Confederation, and its successes and failures. Lastly in second quarter, we will study the U.S. Constitution and the first few presidential administrations. In science, Odyssey kiddos will be learning about how matter interacts. We will study how atoms bond to form compounds, we will learn what happens in a chemical reaction, we will study acids and bases, and we will study the element carbon to discover why it is so prolific in living things. Quarter 2 will give us a much more complete understanding of how matter interacts in the universe, and how all living things are intimately connected. In Mrs. Ford's 8th grade English class, we will complete our short story unit ending with Edgar Allan Poe's, "The Tell-Tale Heart". We will finish the quarter with the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Revolution (Mr. Bennett, Mrs. Crawford, Mr. Good, Mr. Olson, Mrs. Meraz) This quarter in English, we will be working on elements of poetry through an exploration into song lyrics. We will analyze how artists portray individual themes through use of the various literary devices. Second quarter, Revolution Science will focus on chemical reactions, and the processes that occur to cause chemical changes in matter. Students will be learning about compounds and molecules and how they differ. We will be investigating the role of electrons in chemical reactions, the law of conservation of matter, reactants and products, and the impact of energy in reactions. Classes will be participating in several labs where they will see evidence of chemical reactions. In 2nd Quarter History, students will examine the various theories and types of government as well as the form and function of the U.S. Constitution. Students will also become deeply familiar with the U.S. Bill of Rights by examining the document itself and examining landmark court cases. We will also tour the administrations of the first six U.S. Presidents and the major events of each. Triumph (Mr. Bowers, Mrs. Gallagher, Mrs. Simoncioni, Mr. VanDyke) During the Second Quarter Sirius English will focus on the essential question: ―How do argumentative claims shape our ideas, values, beliefs, and behaviors?‖ Such discussions on argumentation will allow students to greatly enhance their ability to question the reading materials, and then cite their findings properly. We will also continue our focus on Silent Sustained Reading. (Did you know that an SSR program of 10-15 minutes each day improves ALL areas of reading?) The classes will also mush through a classic American novel: Jack London’s The Call of the Wild. In Quarter 2, team Triumph science students will use their knowledge from Q1 and the Periodic Table to understand how chemical reactions occur. We will do many labs and activities to fully understand what happens to atoms and molecules during a chemical change. And of course, SAFETY will be of upmost importance as we work with acids and bases. Math students are working in their new consumable textbook to learn Common Core curriculum. Technology, collaborative effort, and problem solving are enhancing the learning experience for all! Looking forward to a great second quarter. In quarter 2 our students will be learning about how the three branches of government operate under the Constitution of the United States, and about what their rights and responsibilities are as American citizens, according to the Bill of Rights. They will be creating an artistic project describing the powers of the three branches. Also, as part of our ―Hands-on History‖ program, students will get to examine Mrs. Gallagher’s collection of political buttons as we discuss the November election results. Next we will study the challenges that we faced as a new republic under the leadership of George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson, and students will be creating a flip-book project comparing the ideas of Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. Viper (Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Hougo, Mrs. Ogroskin, Mrs. Tracy, Mrs. Simmons) As second quarter starts, here’s what students have to look forward to on Team Viper: English classes will begin a unit on the Strange and Mysterious and end the quarter with Call of the Wild, by Jack London. There are two AR book reports this quarter, so encourage your child to be reading his/her book of choice at home. In history, we will jump into our government unit. Our next project will have students looking at current events and understanding how they relate to the three branches of government, as well as several election activities. Then it’s on to George Washington’s presidency and the Early Republic period of the country. Science will mix it up in Chemistry. Labs, demos, and activities reinforce the concept of element interaction. In Math 8 and Algebra 1 students will be learning how to graph linear equation and algebraic functions. Students will also interpret graphs and their meaning in the ―real‖ world. Watch for more updates and students of the month selections in our monthly Viper Pit. Honor Society We inducted 150 members into the 8th grade Honor Society during the month of October. Those students enjoyed a pizza lunch in Knutson Hall and earned their silver medals. We will be inducting both 7th and 8th grade members at the start of the third quarter. The 8th grade students will be earning their gold medals and the 7th grade students will be earning bronze. Students will need to have a 3.5 grade point average for both the 1st and 2nd quarters of this year to apply. Art and Ceramic Classes Beginning Art classes will be focusing on the Elements and Principles of Art while creating a 2015 art calendar. Each month will feature one art element and one principle exemplified by one of many media. For example, January will be a pen and ink drawing using the element of art and line to show the principal of pattern. Ceramics will use the three main techniques of hand building, pinch pot, and slab and coil to create pottery that is both useful and decorative. We will start the quarter with some imaginative gargoyles to reflect the periods we are about to study in history, the Dark Ages and the Renaissance. November is Art Month at Arroyo Seco this year and we will be hosting an Artist in Residence made possible by the City of Santa Clarita. Our artist, Suzi Kades, will be at our school the week of November 10th to show our students how a working artist creates. We will top off our participation of the school-wide Celebration of Art with a Family Art Night fundraiser. It is a chance for your whole family to come to the art room, have dinner and make a combined work of art suitable for framing. We had a blast last spring when we did our first session and hope to have a sold out evening again! Watch for flyers and announcements coming home. A.S.B. This quarter ASB finished up a lot of its Magazine Drive work - cookie dough was distributed successfully and students who earned it participated in the Beach Trip to Ventura and the Wienerschnitzel Wagon lunch. Thank you to all the families who participated and made this fundraiser a big success. Still to come will be the BMX show and our lunch at the mall. On October 28, to promote a healthy democracy, 8th graders will be participating in a mock midterm election. Also, the last week of October we are celebrating Red Ribbon Week where we encourage students to say no to drugs and alcohol. In November we are sponsoring a Turkey Bowl and facilitating a talent show during a noontime event. Should be another great quarter at Arroyo Seco! Future Date: 3rd Quarter dance will be January 30th. Health Office Procedures When a child becomes ill at school, he/she will receive every care and consideration. A Parent/Guardian will be contacted. With so many students and little space in the health office we ask for your full cooperation in picking up a sick child in a reasonable amount of time. We do not have the accommodations for a child to sit in the health office for an extended period of time, and generally he/she will need to return to class after approximately 15 minutes. If, however, a student is deemed quite ill, he/she needs to be picked up as soon as possible. If a parent/guardian cannot pick up the child, and an emergency contact cannot be reached, the parent/guardian will need to make arrangements with a relative or friend, and convey this information to the Health Technician. It is our goal to maintain the health and safety of every child. The following guidelines were written as an indicator for a need to send a student home, or for a student to be kept at home: Fever: A temperature greater than 100 degrees. Student should be fever free without medication for 24 hours before return to school. Upper Respiratory Infection: The student with a cold/cough who show symptoms of fever, tiredness, irritability, not eating well, or signs of earache, sore throat, thick, yellowish or green nasal discharge need to be at home. Undiagnosed skin conditions that may be contagious. Diarrhea: Students with watery diarrhea or frequent loose stools. Nausea/vomiting. Seizures lasting 3 minutes or longer without intervention and/or are different than usual. Communicable Diseases If a student is suspected of being infected with a communicable disease, (e.g. pink eye, chickenpox, head lice), a parent/guardian will be notified to pick up their student from school. If a physician diagnoses your student with a communicable disease, Arroyo Seco Junior High must be notified immediately. Medication: Prescribed, and Over the Counter (OTC) If a student is required to take Prescription Medication or Over the Counter medications during school hours, a Request for Medication to be Taken at School form, must be completed by a Physician, and signed by a Parent/Guardian. Prescribed medication includes over-the-counter and homeopathic medications as well as vitamins. Only certain prescribed medications may be carried and/or selfadministered by the student. These medications include: auto-injectable epinephrine, asthma inhalers, and insulin. This form is available on the District website or from the school Health Office. The ―Request for Medication to be Taken at School” form must accompany the medication, in its original container, clearly labeled with the student’s full name, physician’s name and phone number, name of the medication, dosage, schedule, and date of expiration. Over the Counter medications, such as Tylenol, Advil, etc., are included in these guidelines as well. It is the Parent/Guardian’s responsibility to keep track of the dose count and expiration dates, as well as inform the Health Office Technician of any medication changes. Any student found with medication at school without the appropriate forms on file in the health office, will have their medication confiscated, and will be released to a parent/guardian only. Physical Education Excuse All PE Notes MUST be turned into the HEALTH OFFICE as soon as the student arrives at school. PE notes SHOULD NOT be taken to the PE teachers/coaches, they MUST be given to the Health Technician. A parent may write a note excusing a student from PE for one to three consecutive healing days maximum. If a student is not able to participate in PE in excess of three consecutive healing days, a note from a physician is mandatory, showing the duration of time the student cannot participate in PE. If a student can participate in modified PE, (e.g. walking vs. running, no upper body, etc.), a note from a physician is mandatory and must state the duration of the modification. The use of durable medical equipment for student transport such as wheelchairs, crutches or scooters, as well as medically necessary cast boots, braces, etc., during school hours, must be accompanied by a physician’s note stating the reason and duration of use on school grounds. Please contact the school Health Office for any questions or concerns you may have. Thank you for your help in keeping our students healthy! Which is why the sixteen year old girl discovered floating among the wreckage—alive—is making headlines across the globe. Even more strange is that her body is miraculously unharmed and she has no memories of boarding the plane. She has no memories of her life before the crash. No one knows why she wasn’t on the passenger manifest. And no one can explain why her fingerprints and DNA can't be found in a single database in the world. Her only hope is a strangely alluring boy who claims to know her from before the crash. Who claims they were in love. But can she really trust him? And will he be able to protect her from the people who have been making her forget? My Life Undecided My name is Brooklyn Pierce, I’m fifteen years old, and I am decisionally challenged. Seriously, I can’t remember the last good decision I made. I can remember plenty of crappy ones though. Including that party I threw when my parents were out of town that accidentally burned down a model home. Yeah, not my finest moment, for sure. But see, that’s why I started a blog. To enlist readers to make my decisions for me. Well, it turns out there are some things in life you simply can’t choose or have chosen for you—like who you fall in love with. And now everything’s more screwed up than ever. Unforgotten Some memories are better left forgotten. After a daring escape from the Diotech scientists who created her, Seraphina and Zen believe they are finally safe from the horrors of her past. But new threats await them at every turn as Zen falls prey to a mysterious illness and Sera’s extraordinary abilities make it more and more difficult to stay hidden. Meanwhile, Diotech has developed a dangerous new weapon designed to apprehend Sera. A weapon that even Sera will be powerless to stop. Her only hope of saving Zen’s life and defeating the company that made her is a secret buried deep within her mind. A secret that Diotech will kill to protect. And it won’t stay forgotten for long. Packed with mystery, suspense, and romance, Unforgotten is the riveting second installment of Jessica Brody’s Unremembered trilogy, and delivers more heart pounding action as loyalties are tested, love becomes a weapon, and no one’s memories are safe. The Karma Club Madison Kasparkova always thought she understood how Karma works. You know—do good things and you will be rewarded, do something bad and you’ll get that’s coming to you. But when Maddy’s longtime boyfriend gets caught tongue wrestling with Miss Perfect Body Heather Campbell, and they wind up the hot new couple at school, it seems like Karma is on a break. So Maddy and her friends decide to start the Karma Club—a secret, members-only organization for dealing with messes the universe is leaving behind. They’re just doing what Karma should have done in the first place, right? 52 Reasons to Hate My Father Lexington Larrabee has never had to work a day in her life. After all, she’s the heiress to the multibillion dollar Larrabee Media empire. And heiresses are not supposed to work. But then again, they’re not supposed to crash brand-new Mercedes convertibles into convenience stores on Sunset Boulevard either. Which is why, on Lexi’s eighteenth birthday, her ever absent, tycoon father decides to take a more proactive approach to her wayward life. Every week for the next year, she will have to take on a different low wage job if she ever wants to receive her beloved trust fund. But if there’s anything worse than working as a maid, a dishwasher, and a fast-food restaurant employee, it’s dealing with Luke, the arrogant, albeit moderately attractive, college intern her father has assigned to keep tabs on her.
