WE HEAR GOD’S SAVING WORD
OLD TESTAMENT LESSON
Zephaniah 1:7, 12–18
Zephaniah (like the prophet Amos in last week's first reading) presents
the day of the Lord as one of judgment and wrath. Descriptions of the
last day in the New Testament include details taken from Old Testament
accounts of the day of the Lord.

Be silent before the Lord GOD! For the day of the LORD is at hand; the

LORD has prepared a sacrifice, he has consecrated his guests. At that
time I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the people who
rest complacently on their dregs, those who say in their hearts, "The

LORD will not do good, nor will he do harm." Their wealth shall be
plundered, and their houses laid waste. Though they build houses, they
shall not inhabit them; though they plant vineyards, they shall not drink

wine from them. The great day of the LORD is near, near and
hastening fast; the sound of the day of the LORD is bitter, the warrior

cries aloud there. That day will be a day of wrath, a day of distress and

able to save them on the day of the LORD's wrath; in the fire of his
passion the whole earth shall be consumed; for a full, a terrible end
he will make of all the inhabitants of the earth.

Lord, you have been our refuge

1 Thessalonians 5:1–11
Though we do not know and cannot calculate the day of Christ's return,
we live faithfully in the here and now as we anticipate the day when we
will be given eternal salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do

not need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves know very

well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When they

say, "There is peace and security," then sudden destruction will come
upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will

be no escape! But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to

surprise you like a thief; for you are all children of light and children of

the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. So then let us not fall
7
asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; for those who

sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. But
since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of

faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has
destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord

Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep

Jesus tells a parable about his second coming, indicating that it is not
sufficient merely to maintain things as they are. Those who await his
return should make good use of the gifts that God has provided them.

For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and

entrusted his property to them; to one he gave five talents, to another

two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away.

The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded

did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; so I was
afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what

is yours.' But his master replied, 'You wicked and lazy slave! You knew,
did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not

scatter? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers,
and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest.

So take the talent from him, and give it to the one with the ten talents.

For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an
abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will

be taken away. As for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer
darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

P: Remembering the saints who have gone before us and giving thanks
for God's blessings, we pray for the church, all in need, and God's
good creation.

CARING CENTER 110 W. Main. We are in need of men’s clothes, sweatshirts,

boots, shoes and coats. For the women, we are in need of winter clothes, coats,
shoes and boots. We always take household items, silverware, dishes, bedding,
towels, lamps—all working and clean. Our items are for those in need, they can
come once a month, with limits to be taken. All are free or free will offering to
help pay our rent, lights and insurance. Donna, Bonnie and I (Karen), volunteer
from OSLC. Please stop in and take a look. Monday & Wednesday 10:00 am to

RETIRED CLERGY in Marshalltown invite you to come together for a
COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING SERVICE, Sunday, November 23, 3:00 p.m., at
Hope United Methodist Church. The Marshalltown Men's Chorus, along with
several retired pastors will be involved. Scripture, prayer, and music, appropriate
for the national Day of Thanksgiving will be shared. Everyone will be warmly
welcomed.
WELCA – All women, as members of Our Savior Lutheran Church, are a
member of WELCA, We invite each of you to pick up a Mite box or envelope in
the fellowship hall and return it on Sunday, November 16, when we will celebrate
our annual Thankoffering day. The donations received from this offering will be
used to support the total outreach of the organization including scholarships for
women in seminary, the many Women of ELCA publications and in partnership

with other organizations such as Lutheran World Relief, Lutheran Disaster
Response, ELCA World Hunger and Global Missions and so much more. Also
included are Rachel’s Day and Children’s Sabbath programs for children in crisis.
We also make donations to needs of OSLC. Our Thankofferings are our
response in gratitude to all the blessings that come to us and flow through us.
Our Thankofferings make all this possible. Let us bless the Lord and in gratitude,
bless the church, the society, and the world through our generosity. We invite all

women of OSLC to join us at our meetings the 2 Tuesday of the month at
1:30pm. With Pastor Mike’s guidance, we are beginning a study of the book
Mark. Please come and join us.
