Welcome
We offer a warm welcome to all students,
parents, guests, governors and teachers who
can be here tonight.
This awards evening is the first of its kind and
we hope it will become part of the College’s
future, part of its many traditions and
successes and ultimately part of its rich past.
Launceston College is committed to
the pursuit of individual excellence and
achievement whilst ensuring that no-one is
left behind; we believe that students should
have all of their achievements recognised,
acknowledged and given credit and we
believe that this annual awards event will
reward and inspire greater success. All
of those nominated tonight are winners,
however one name for each award will be recorded on the honours board in our main hall, thus
leaving an indelible mark on the College’s recorded history.
The College was first founded in 1409 as Launceston Grammar School and has been on the
current site since 1873; we were renamed as Launceston College in 1931, became co-educational
in 1962, we became a comprehensive school in 1965 and an Academy in 2013. Launceston is a
settled community and many parents attended the College as students and in some cases many
generations before. This long history and central place in the community all goes towards making
the College the special place that it is today.
This awards evening reflects the excellent relationships between students, parents and the wider
Launceston Community and recognises that everyone has a vital part to play in ensuring that
Launceston College is successful. Each award has been named after a personal, geographical or
partnership link with the College: it is inspiring to have awards named after a Turner prize winner
and England cricket team psychologist; both former students of the College.
Our address tonight will be given by Dr Steve Wharton FRSA who is senior lecturer in French
and Communication and also lecturer in the Department of Politics, Languages and International
Studies at the University of Bath. Dr Wharton has been knighted by the French government for his
services to language: he was awarded the Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques. He is
co-director of Routes into Languages South West.
I am hugely proud of the achievement of students at Launceston College and hope you enjoy this
evening’s recognition of their talents.

Design Technology
Sir Kenneth Grange Award
Sir Kenneth Henry Grange, CBE, MCSD, RDI is a British industrial designer who lives near Lewdown. Sir
Kenneth’s career has spanned more than half a century, and many of his designs are familiar items in the
household and the street and include designs for Venner, Kenwood, Wilkinson Sword, Kodak, Imperial,
Morphy Richards, Ronson, Bendix and Parker. He was also responsible for the aerodynamics, interior
layout and exterior styling of the nose cone of British Rail’s famous High Speed Train, the InterCity 125 and
involved in the design of the 1997 TX1 London taxi-cab. Sir Kenneth has won ten Design Council Awards,
the Duke of Edinburgh’s prize for Elegant Design in 1966, and in 2001 he was awarded the Prince Philip
Designers Prize – honouring a lifetime achievement. He was knighted in the 2013 New Year Honours.
Charlotte Hartnell is currently in Year 11: she made the decision to study art
textiles in her own time after College. Her dedication, enthusiasm and persistence
have not only produced excellent work but also allowed her to be an outstanding
role model for the rest of the class. She is creative and happy to take advice
and also tries ideas out of her comfort zone with a positive attitude. Her thirst for
learning new skills has given her an excellent foundation for her future studies.
Ben Kew is currently in Year 13 and is studying food technology at A Level. He
has shown a keen interest in food related subjects for a number of years. He was
in the first cohort of students to study NVQ Professional Cookery and he gained
outstanding results. Ben’s impressive academic ability meant he then followed this
up by studying food technology at level three. He is always willing to help at events
in Dunheved House and has masterminded some outstanding food banquets on
a number of occasions. It is only a matter of time before Ben is a contender on
Masterchef!
Oliver Platt is currently in Year 11 and has been nominated for his conscientious
attitude and his determination to do well in electronic products. He always strives
to do his best and is always willing to extend the boundaries of the subject.
Whenever there is individual study to be done, Oliver always goes the extra mile.
He has supported the design and technology department at open evenings where
he has shared with others his enthusiasm for the subject. Without doubt Oliver will
be one of the designers of the future, keeping Britain at the forefront of the world in
design and technology.
Yas Statton has shown great enthusiasm and exceptional ability in practical
catering skills. She has always wanted to know how she could improve and has
then acted upon this. She has been happy to independently research tasks as
well as thoroughly absorb what is taught. She is a great organiser and team leader
which has been shown in successful events. Her dedication and thirst for the
subject has enabled her to be following her dream and she is now studying VRQ 1
at Michelin starred celebrity chef Michael Caine’s Academy in Exeter.
Design Technology
Resilience Award
Callum Bourne is currently in Year 11 and has proven himself to be a dedicated
and conscientious student in design and technology. Callum has risen to the
challenges of the subject with resilience and is on course to achieve his target
grade. Callum is a quietly determined and positive student who has striven to do
his best. He is to be commended for his hard work and excellent progress within
the subject.
Laura Dubey is currently in Year 13. Laura began studying A level food and
nutrition in Year 12 despite not having experience of studying food technology
at GCSE. She has risen to the many challenges this prompted and has shown
resilience and determination. Laura persevered and was rewarded with an A
grade at AS level: Laura has now embraced the challenges of Year 13 and we are
convinced she will do just as well this year.
Toby Lee is currently in Year 8. He is always both conscientious and ambitious.
He shows great enthusiasm for each task set and is determined to do his best.
He is willing to learn new skills and then put them into reality effectively. He is
determined to succeed and should have a very successful future ahead of him in
design and technology.
Emma Platt is currently in Year 11 and is a gifted illustrator and graphic designer.
She has been nominated for her passion and drive, and for her quest to achieve a
perfect result in graphic design. Her meticulous attention to detail and her striving
for perfection in every aspect of her project work, puts her in a category of her
own. Emma approaches problems head on, and although often reserved, she
knows exactly what she wants to achieve and listens intently to advice to help her
achieve it.
English
The Arvon Award
The Arvon Foundation was founded in 1968 by two poets, John Moat and John Fairfax, with the original aim
of providing time and space away from school for young people to write poetry. In 1980, in order to raise
funds for Arvon, Ted Hughes established the Arvon International Poetry Competition. That year his fellow
judges were Charles Causley, Philip Larkin and Seamus Heaney. Oliver Meek is centre director for Arvon’s
Totleigh Barton centre.
Joe Metcalfe is currently in Year 8. He is genuinely purposeful and reflective and
shows maturity beyond his years. He utilises an extensive and sophisticated
vocabulary in responses whilst thinking meticulously about ideas. He is a thinker
who applies his thoughts in a creative and analytical manner. Joe is an ambitious
and eager scholar.
Louis March is currently in Year 10. He consistently exceeds the targets which
are set for him. Approaching his studies in a focused and determined manner has
ensured Louis is successful. Responsibility for his own success and learning are
ingrained in his personal study habits. Despite only just beginning Year 10 Louis is
already studying for an AS level in creative writing.
Ellie Parsons is reading English Language and Literature at Oxford University. Her
ability to synthesise ideas across genres, appreciate a range of literary theory and
to skilfully contextualise texts, ensured that she attained full marks in all sections
of the A2 course. Ellie displays the unerring ability to precisely deconstruct the
most challenging texts.
Rebecca Petersen is reading English at Birmingham University. Gaining an A* at
Literature A level was the consequence of her voracious reading and thorough
love of literature. Rebecca attained full marks in the A2 examination, testament to
her fierce desire to improve and her understanding of texts from a wide range of
viewpoints.
English
Falmouth School of Writing and Journalism Award
Falmouth’s School of Writing and Journalism has a reputation for excellent teaching, renowned vocational
MAs and internationally recognised research. It is a vibrant, creative community with some of the best
facilities in the country. Lecturers have experience in magazine and broadcast journalism, publishing and
creative writing, as well as academic expertise in a range of literary subjects. In 2012 Falmouth School of
Writing and Journalism launched a Writers-in-Residence programme, which brings award winning authors
to Falmouth for creative workshops, lectures and public events. The programmes include some of the
leading academics, poets, publishers, business writers and novelists in the UK and beyond, including
Simon Armitage and Lionel Shriver. Nigel Kingcome is Head of School.
Annabel Barnes is currently in Year 10 and has committed herself to various
extra-curricular activities which have included Poetry by Heart and the English
readings in the Carol Concert. Her enthusiasm and “have a go” ethos are a credit
to her. Annabel leads by example, is supportive and sensitive of others and her
conscientious and thoughtful approach make her a successful scholar.
John Hopper is currently in Year 8 and has an infectious curiosity which pervades
his learning. He is able to make links with his learning to ideas beyond the
classroom setting. John often shares his independent learning and encourages
and inspires others to “find out”. John is a quirky, creative and proactive scholar.
Georgina May is a vivacious scholar who consistently applies herself in seeking
improvement. She regularly asks for feedback and clarification, ensuring that
she knows exactly how to do things better. There are “light bulb” moments
where Georgina has understood key ideas which in turn are then adapted by
her. She is unafraid to ask for help, knowing that mistakes are often the route to
understanding and success.
Jess Soddy, currently studying in Year 11, quietly employs her diligence and
determination to help her in seeking ways to improve. She constantly strives
beyond her target grade, asking the most effective questions to aid her in her
learning. Jess is an unassuming and modest scholar who is taking responsibility
for her own successes.
Expressive Arts
Prof. Grenville Davey Award
Professor Grenville Davey is an English sculptor and winner of the Tate’s 1992 Turner Prize. Professor
Davey is a visiting professor of the University of the Arts London and programme leader, MA Fine Art at
the University of East London. From December 2010 he became resident artist at the physics department
of Queen Mary, University of London, working with Dr David Berman. He was the artist-in-residence at the
Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences from January to June 2012. Professor Davey was born in
Launceston, attended Launceston College, first studied art in Exeter before going to Goldsmiths College in
London in 1985 where he took a BA in fine art.
Emma Barnes is currently in Year 13 and has been nominated for being an
outstanding and inspirational leader. She has helped to coach and officiate at
netball practices and matches over the last two years. Emma is extremely reliable,
very well organised, knowledgeable and has freely given her time to help the girls
develop and refine their netball skills. Emma is an excellent role model and has a
fantastic working relationship with the younger players.
Robert Harvey is currently in Year 13 and is studying art at A Level. He is a
talented, hard working and thoughtful student who has grown as an artist in the
last year. He approaches his work with a maturity of thought and reasoning. He
embraces challenge in his work, provoking himself and the viewer to look and
think deeply. He will achieve a very good result at A Level and this will lead him to
great success in the creative industries.
Matt Parsons is currently in Year 9. He has lessons in piano, guitar and drums
and is also a keen enthusiast of music technology. He is genuinely dedicated to
his own musical development and immerses himself fully in any performance
opportunity. He currently plays at a level more in line with a GCSE student but
what is particularly impressive with Matt is that he plays with genuine expression
and musicality and shows a level of musical interpretation beyond his years.
He clearly loves what he does and that passion shines through in his playing.
Certainly one to watch!
Rosie Sluggett is currently in Year 11 and is studying art at GCSE. She has
demonstrated outstanding skills in art; her drawing, painting and 3 dimensional
work are exceptional. She thinks deeply about her work and has created
innovative final pieces for her coursework. Her creative mind and hardworking
approach will enable her to achieve outstanding results at GCSE, to progress to A
level and to a future career in the arts.
Expressive Arts
Dr. Mark Bawden Award
Dr. Mark Bawden is the National Lead for the England cricket Performance Psychology team. The team’s
aim is to work with coaches and players to optimize the mental development, mental readiness and
ongoing mental performance of players in the England squads. Dr. Mark Bawden, a former Launceston
College student, was an accomplished cricketer himself but unfortunately suffered from the “yips” as a
teenager. He completed a PhD on the topic, published a paper on the yips in the Journal of Sports Science
and thus developed the foundation for his career in sports psychology.
Precious Abesamis is currently in Year 10 and is studying art at GCSE. She is an
extremely talented, hard working student, working beyond GCSE both in and out
of lessons. She has exceptional drawing ability, uses paint with confidence and
skill and is prepared to challenge herself in art. Her skill and creativity will continue
to grow in the coming years and we have every confidence she will achieve
outstanding results at GCSE and into the future.
Holly Draper is currently in Year 13 and is studying art and photography at A
Level. She has shown an outstanding dedication in both disciplines and her talent,
determination and resilience have allowed her to achieve outstanding results at
A/S. Her exceptional drawing and painting skills and her ability to compose an
original photograph will enable her to achieve outstanding results in both subjects
at A2 and to become a notable artist of the future.
Isobel Paul is currently in Year 11. She is a multi-talented performer and
demonstrates high ability, supported with an incredible work ethic. Isobel’s
contribution to the College productions has been superb. Her innate ability and
dedication will carry her through education into a career in the arts.
Tom Sharman is currently studying GCSE music in Year 11 and has shown a real
talent for piano, ragtime piano in particular, since his arrival at the College in Year
8. He is committed to reaching his full potential as a musician and involves himself
fully in the life of the music department, regularly rehearsing and performing with
our advanced level musicians. Despite his genuine gift for music, he is always
modest and willing to learn and soaks up every musical idea that is thrown at him!
He is the first student to take on the musical director role in a school production
and he succeeded in this task with flair and maturity. We expect great things in
Tom’s musical future!
Humanities
Commitment to Learning Award
Miriam Christine is currently in Year 12 and works incredibly hard to develop
her understanding; she is determined to succeed and goes above and beyond
expectations to ensure that she is successful. This was reflected in her GCSE
results where she achieved an A* and two As in her humanities subjects. She is
incredibly conscientious and works equally well in a team or independently. She
contributes eloquently to class discussion and shares her knowledge and skills
with others selflessly.
Leigh Rickard is currently in Year 13 studying history and citizenship at A level.
She is conscientious and diligent, and she always applies herself enthusiastically
to all tasks. She works well individually and is also a cooperative and supportive
group member. This year she has represented Launceston College whilst on a
visit to Auschwitz and has shared this experience with a number of students within
the college.
Laura Soddy is a Year 10 student who always works very hard to ensure that she
understands concepts. She is extremely conscientious, always going the extra
mile. She will independently research the opinions of others to offer balance and
judgment in her answers. She consolidates her learning at home and always acts
on feedback and advice from her teachers. Laura is genuinely a pleasure to teach
and an asset to any class.
Amber Wickens is currently in Year 12. She is a model student. She shows an
enthusiasm and talent for all humanities subjects. She recently achieved an A* for
her history, religious studies and geography GCSEs. Since moving into sixth form
Amber has continued to share her passion and enthusiasm with others around
her.
Humanities
Outstanding Achievement Award
Tom Bailey is a Year 10 student who has made the most of opportunities that are
available to him, for example taking part in the the Launceston Youth Council and
working with younger students to engage them in active citizenship. He works
extremely hard in all of his lessons, always going the extra mile, and therefore
achieving excellent results across the humanities subjects.
Coral Benfield is currently in Year 9 and is an extremely diligent student. There
is no task too big or small for her; she always tackles activities with enthusiasm
and determination. She created an exceptional eco tourist resort as part of the
geography course last year, and continues to shine in her work this academic
year.
Ruby Mead is a Year 9 student who has excelled over the last two years
at Launceston College. She exceeded her target grades last year in her
assessments and continues to show the motivation to make further progress
this year. She is growing in confidence and is developing into a thoughtful and
inspirational young lady.
Sophie Vanstone is currently in Year 9. She is an integral member of her
tutor group, who have all worked hard to develop their understanding of the
controversial and difficult topic of child trafficking. Sophie illustrated great maturity
and empathy during this project and travelled to London to further explore this
issue. Her work continues to educate others as she and her peers teach other
students about this topic.
Mathematics
Dr. Ted Graham Award
Dr. Ted Graham works mainly as a freelance mathematics educationalist. Ted worked in mathematics
education and teacher training for many years at Plymouth University, having previously worked as a
teacher in both a secondary school and a prison. Currently Ted is working with a range of schools and
educational organizations, such the Further Mathematics Support Programme and the Prince’s Teaching
Institute. Ted offers a wide range of activities and workshops for students and teachers and travels across
the UK and abroad to deliver them. Ted also still plays a small role at Plymouth University, where he
supervises PhD students working on mathematics education projects and edits the International Journal for
Technology in Mathematics Education.
Philip Baker is currently in Year 13. He has been nominated for this award for
many reasons. He is not only an exceptional mathematician but also voluntarily
gives up time to help others whether that is as a maths mentor, by providing
support at lunchtime with homework, or by spending time working with his
peers during and outside of lessons. He has achieved exceptional results in his
mathematics and further mathematics A Level modules and has represented the
school at UKMT challenge events.
James Bate is currently in Year 12 studying mathematics and further mathematics
A Levels . He has been nominated for his outstanding effort and progress within
Year 11. Not only did he achieve an A* for his GCSE he also independently
pushed himself and his own understanding and successfully achieved a grade A in
the additional mathematics qualification. He is an inquisitive learner and strives to
develop an understanding of a range of concepts that are beyond the scope of the
curriculum.
Coral Benfield is a very conscientious and hard-working student who always
pushes herself to exceed expectations and enjoys working on challenging tasks.
Her approach to tasks shows her natural abilities and considerable mathematical
knowledge.
Jacob Lee is currently in Year 12 studying A Level mathematics and is nominated
for this award because of his outstanding achievements in mathematics. He has
consistenly surpassed expectations and achieved results above target throughout
his school life. His hard work has been rewarded with the deserved and highly
impressive result of an A* last year, making 5 levels of progress from Key Stage 2.
Mathematics
Prof. Dame Celia Hoyles Award
Professor Dame Celia Hoyles DBE, is a British mathematician, educationalist and academic. She is
Professor of Mathematics Education at the Institute of Education, University of London. Since January 2014
she has been President of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. She served as Government
Chief Adviser for mathematics from 2004 to 2007 and as Director of the National Centre for Excellence in
the Teaching of Mathematics from 2007 to 2013. In the 2004 New Year Honours, Prof. Dame Celia was
awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) ‘for services to education’. In the 2014 New Year Honours,
she was promoted to Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in recognition of her
service as Director of the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics.
Courtney Kingdon is currently in Year 12 and was an outstanding Year 11 student
last year. Although not a “natural” mathematician Courtney worked hard to
increase her understanding, always taking a very active part in lessons, and
spending many hours working independently to ensure that she significantly
improved on her target grade. She gradually improved results in mock exams, bit
by bit, and ended up exceeding all of our expectations by achieving two grades
above her target. Courtney has excellent determination!
Chloe-Marie Martin is currently a Year 8 student. She has been nominated
because of her outstanding effort in mathematics. She has exceeded her target
grade through determined hard work, attending after-school lessons and always
pushing herself to complete additional work to the very highest standard. ChloeMarie is always willing to give support and help to her peers.
Tom Mead is currently in Year 11. Tom has been nominated for his effort
and engagement within mathematics lessons. Tom rises to the challenges
mathematics provides and is committed to achieving his target grade. He
recognises the importance of this subject in supporting his future plans and he
makes every effort to be independent in his learning. He is keen to problem solve
and to develop his own mathematical thinking.
Yas Statton is now at Exeter College. She has been nominated for her
determination to succeed, and to exceed expectations, in a subject she often
found challenging. Yas achieved her target grade in Year 10 and throughout Year
11 worked towards exceeding this target. She attended maths lessons but also
took it upon herself to spend an extra hour after school on a Friday to work on the
key higher maths topics. Yas continually pushed herself with topics well above her
target grade and was regularly completing extra work. Yas was a model student
with her friendly and enquiring mind; she was a pleasure to work with.
Modern Foreign Languages
Dr. Steve Wharton Award
Dr. Steve Wharton, Bath University, is a social and cultural historian with particular interests in LGBT
activism in Britain and France, and contemporary political communication. He is Director of Language
Learning and Teaching and is also Co-Director of Routes into Languages South West. In 2012 the French
Government made Dr. Wharton Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques for services to French
Culture. His teaching has been recognised through the Mary Tasker Award for Excellence in University
Teaching; he is also an acknowledged expert in contemporary social movements. In addition to enhancing
awareness of French propaganda of the Vichy period through academic and external engagement, he has
direct knowledge of the HE industrial relations landscape, including national negotiating machinery.
Coral Benfield is currently in Year 9 studying Spanish and French. She is an
outstanding linguist who always looks for ways in which to extend the range of
her language, and she spots patterns and rules quickly, thereby showing a very
good understanding of how languages work. Coral has a sound understanding of
complex grammar and her vocabulary in both languages is constantly growing.
She is able to use language creatively and is achieving standards well above that
expected of a Year 9 student. Her determination and dedication to her study of
languages puts her in an extremely strong position to use languages in the future,
whatever her chosen career.
Ellie Biddick is currently in Year 10. A naturally talented linguist, Ellie also
strives to push her understanding beyond expectation: she undertakes research
independently in order to satisfy her natural curiosity in Spanish and her use of
questions in class reveals the full range of her high thinking skills. Ellie is able to
build on previous learning, effectively re-using language and notions which she
has learnt previously.
Jessica Daw is currently in Year 11 and is in the bilingual class. She is an
outstanding linguist who not only excels in French, the first foreign language
she learnt, but also now in Spanish. Jessica has a sound understanding of
grammar and confident vocabulary recognition which allow her to manipulate both
languages with ease. Her determination to succeed means that, so far, she has
produced work of a very high standard, all of which bodes extremely well for a
bright future in languages.
Tom Hopper is currently in Year 11 and has been nominated for his conscientious
attitude and his determination to do well in learning a Modern Foreign Language.
He always strives to do his best and is an excellent role model for other students
to follow. Whenever there is individual study to be done, Tom can be relied upon
to go the extra mile. He is always prepared to have a go and his positive attitude
allows him to tackle challenging and unfamiliar language with confidence.
Modern Foreign Languages
Dr. Rosalind Leveridge Award
Dr Rosalind Leveridge, University of Exeter, is responsible for widening participation into language learning
and is the Routes into Languages South West Coordinator. Her research interests include late nineteenth
century and early twentieth century popular visual culture, in particular optical entertainments involving
magic lanterns, panoramas, etc. with an emphasis on regional exhibition. She is also researching cinema
before the First World War, in particular, the places and spaces in which film was screened prior to fixedvenue exhibition, and the important relationships which existed between cinemas and communities in the
period up to 1914.
Gabriella Asman is currently in Year 9 studying Spanish and French. She shows
a steely determination to succeed in languages, always following her teachers’
advice with an extremely positive attitude. She understands that success in
languages requires a lot of hard work and attention to detail, and she is to be
commended for the time that she clearly puts in. Her understanding of complex
grammatical structures is constantly growing, her vocabulary is becoming
ever wider, and she is able to use language creatively in short stories. Her
determination to succeed puts her in a very strong position for using languages in
the future, both in college and later in life.
Laura Dennis is currently in Year 13 and is studying French and Spanish at
A Level. She is showing a keen interest in both languages and her sheer
determination, resilience and hard work have allowed her to achieve some
outstanding results in her AS examinations, particularly in Spanish. Her confidence
has grown in leaps and bounds and we are all impressed by the progress she has
made through the year. A competent linguist in the making!
Jess McAlpine is currently in Year 11 and has proven herself to be a dedicated
and conscientious student in Modern Foreign Languages. Despite finding
language learning a challenge at times, Jess always keeps a positive attitude
and strives to do well. She is to be commended for her persistent, hardworking
and conscientious attitude. She has made excellent progress in languages and
continues to try her best in every aspect of the language.
Brandon Turner is currently in Year 9. Brandon goes out of his way to use Spanish
spontaneously, both in and outside the classroom context; he is able to transfer
his pleasant and polite manner to the Spanish language. Brandon is committed to
progress beyond his target grade by regularly asking pertinent questions in class
and learning from websites independently.
Science
Prof. Colin Webb Award
Colin Webb was born in Erith, Kent, England. He completed his BSc Physics at the University of
Nottingham in 1960. On completing his DPhil at Oxford in 1964 he became a member of technical staff of
Bell Laboratories in New Jersey USA where he was responsible for much of the early development of the
argon ion laser. He returned to Oxford University in 1968 to take up a Research Fellowship and to head
the Laser group at the Clarendon Laboratory. In 1970 he became a University Lecturer and in 1971 he
was elected as a Tutorial Fellow of Jesus College. Colin is a governor of Launceston College and mentor
to students aiming for the most prestigious universities. He is also the organiser of Launceston’s Café
Scientifique, which meets monthly at Jericho’s Brasserie.
Philip Baker is currently in Year 13 and is an incredibly talented scientist who
works with exceptional diligence. Every task in all science based disciplines is
completed with skill and endeavour and allied to his fantastic natural ability to think
about even the most abstract concepts, means that he has achieved 5 grade As
in science and mathematics AS subjects. Philip will be a success in whatever field
of medical science he goes on to study.
James Bate is an outstanding scientist with the most wonderful enquiring mind.
He can be relied upon to ask the most probing of questions and use the answers
to deepen his, and others’, understanding of scientific concepts. His drive to find
‘the answer’ and his ability to go away and research ideas always enhances
his learning. When asked to present a topic to the rest of the class, his ability to
communicate at just the right level with his peers is exceptional. I am confident he
will be one of our highest achievers at A level and move on to a place at one of the
top universities.
Sam Harrison is currently in Year 9 at Launceston College. During his Year 8 he
studied GCSE Astronomy as an extra-curricular course; it was a year of hard work,
which involved Sam revising the astronomy content every day before school. Sam
achieved an A grade for his GCSE. Sam has done exceptionally well and is the
youngest person at Launceston College to get an A in the 14 years that astronomy
has been taught at the college. Sam’s achievement is amazing and shows his
dedication to study. We look forward to further successes from Sam in the future.
Toby McMillan has been nominated for his excellent attitude to his science studies.
During lessons he is diligent in ensuring he understands every topic and shows
enthusiasm at all times. Toby realised that in order to exceed his target grade
he needed to match lesson time in school with study time at home. Due to this
outstanding work ethic Toby is the first student to achieve an A* grade in core
science in Year 10. Toby always has a cheerful and positive attitude and has
gained the respect of his peers.
Science
The Imerys Award
Active in 47 countries with more than 240 industrial locations, Imerys is the world leader in adding value
to minerals. Imerys’ Kaolin business is underpinned by a strong commitment to technology. The Kaolin
division includes researchers, engineers, geologists and technicians based in major laboratories in
Cornwall, Georgia and Toulouse. The Imerys group works in closely with universities in Europe, North and
South America, Asia and Africa: the Human Resources managers and operational managers are present at
career fairs profiling the opportunities for jobs and internships in Geology and Mining, Sales and Marketing,
Exploitation and Production, Research and Development, Finance and Control. Ashley Shopland, former
Launceston College student, is Head of UK Kaolin Platform.
Max Harmer is currently in Year 12 and was an inspiring influence to everyone
in his GCSE class over the 2 years of science. Max worked hard throughout his
lessons and his homework was always carried out thoroughly too. Max had an
optimistic outlook which rubbed off on and motivated others. He attended every
revision session and gave the course hours of dedication. He achieved 2 Cs in
GCSE core and additional science: outstanding achievements.
John Hopper is currently in Year 8 and has a keen interest in progamming. He
was challenged by Mr Chesbrough to build a Lego device that would be able
to solve a Rubik’s cube in under three minutes. He succeeded, and the device
was the star of the Year 6 Open Evening in October. John worked tirelessly for
weeks, during break, lunchtime and after school, only breaking his concentration
to help the Year 11s with their science revision! His nomination for this award is in
recognition of his dedication, enthusiasm and resilience.
Katie Phillips is currently in Year 13 and is a conscientious, creative and
meticulously diligent A level science student. She meets all deadlines and studies
beyond what is required. Her resilience and ‘never give up’ approach are regularly
demonstrated and always with a smile on her face and a positive attitude. She is a
kind and caring student who supports others around her at all times.
Megan Shute is currently in Year 13 and is an incredibly dedicated, hardworking
and diligent student who has a bright future in an earth science based career.
Megan is wholly committed to her chosen career pathway and this is evidenced
daily in her A level geology, physics and chemistry lessons. Her enthusiasm was
recently demonstrated in the science faculty at the whole college open evening ,
speaking to prospective students and their parents with passion. Her inspiration
will guide and enthuse the earth scientists of the future!
Vocational
The Edge Foundation Award
The Edge Foundation is an independent education charity. It is dedicated to raising the status of technical,
practical and vocational learning. The Edge Foundation believes all young people should have the
opportunity to achieve their potential and the UK’s future workforce needs to be equipped with the skills
to be successful in the modern, global economy. It believes that it is essential that “learning by doing” is
valued equally with academic learning and that all learners should experience a mixture of both. The Edge
Foundation made a significant contribution to the redevelopment of Dunheved House and in particular the
design of the catering and hair and beauty facilities.
Nathan Jeffery is currently in Year 11 studying motor mechanics. Nathan has
shown great skill, commitment and aptitude in his motor vehicle course. He has
grown in confidence and developed his skills considerably since joining the course
in Year 10 and looks set for a promising future in the motor industry.
Jack Pannell is a current Year 11 student studying construction within the
vocational faculty. Jack is a perfectionist in his approach to bricklaying and his
build quality is well above the standard expected of someone of his age. He was
successful in the CITB School Build Championship in 2014 with his consistently
high standards and looks set for further achievements this year.
Sam Rickard is currently an apprentice on the College’s construction
apprenticeship programme. He has been nominated for this award after becoming
a finalist at the Guild of Bricklayers national competition: he was representing the
South West! Sam is a conscientious and meticulous builder who has a real eye
for detail in all of his building work.
Kaleena Uzzell is currently in Year 11 and has been a consistent hard worker
since the start of her childcare course. Her work is always of a very high standard
and she completes her assignments well before the deadlines set. She is polite,
enthusiastic and shows tremendous dedication to her studies.
Vocational
The Enterprise Award
Tom Boundy is currently in Year 13 and has been nominated for this award
for his exceptional achievement in business. Tom originally enrolled on the
single business course; equivalent to one A Level. However, Tom’s outstanding
independent skills and his highly ambitious nature meant he decided to double
his work load, complete the equivalent of two A Levels, but in the same amount of
time as others completing one A Level. He is now on track to achieve above his
target with starred double distinction: he only has himself to praise for this, for all
of his hard work and ambition.
Ben Cumbers is currently in Year 11 studying business. He has performed
extremely well throughout the course. Ben has worked well above his target grade
and is always looking to improve the quality of his coursework. Ben has shown a
great deal of enthusiasm for the course and is obviously committed to achieving
the highest grade he can.
Tom Davison is currently on a gap year after completing his BTEC ICT Level
3 course to the grade of starred distinction. Tom is a student who has always
aimed for the best, producing work of an excellent quality: he works relentlessly to
produce the highest standards and to improve his overall learning in the subject
of ICT. During his gap year he is visiting Italy before beginning his studies at the
University of Falmouth.
Josh Warden is currently a Year 11 student. He has been nominated for his
excellent achievement in BTEC ICT, achieving the grade of distinction in all of the
coursework elements. Josh has an excellent work ethic, putting in additional hours
at break, lunch and at home to ensure his work is always of the highest quality.
Adventure Learning
Leo Houlding Award
Leo Houlding is a British rock climber widely considered one of the best speed climbers ever to have
lived. At the age of 18 Leo became the first Briton to free climb El Capitan in the Yosemite Valley, and
has gone on to climb many of its toughest lines. He has appeared in the BBC television programme Top
Gear in which he raced presenter Jeremy Clarkson up a cliff face in Verdon Gorge, winning the challenge.
Launceston College is part of the Adventure Learning School network and this year ALS collaborated
with Leo Houlding during his expedition to climb Ulvetanna in Antarctica. Six schools took part in the
collaboration utilising Leo’s expedition materials into their curriculum.
Maya Duncan-Adams is currently in Year 11 and showed great resilience and
determination in the 2014 Ten Tors event. She made excellent progress during
the training period and was determined to succeed. Week by week her fitness
developed and the weight she carried increased: she also became more confident
in assisting her team mates with navigational decisions. Maya’s focus and drive to
succeed were outstanding and paid off when she crossed the finish line at the 35
mile event.
Max Harmer is currently in Year 12. He has taken on the Ten Tors Jubilee
Challenge for three years gaining bronze, silver and gold medals. He has done
so as an individual entrant, a team leader and a team member. This year he
competes in a more arduous 20 kilometre route. Max has been an enthusiastic,
resilient and determined participant on every occasion coping with whatever
Dartmoor can throw at him. He reflects Launceston College at its best in that is
he is a well rounded student with character and personality, determined to do his
best at all times, compassionate towards others and letting nothing deter him from
enjoying and making the best of life.
Jacob Lee is currently in Year 12 and was a direct entrant at the 45 mile Ten Tors
event. He showed great focus during training and worked hard to master the
different navigation skills. His expedition preparation was strong; his hill walking
fitness and awareness for his team mates excellent. He went on to successfully
lead his five team mates around the 45 mile event in a great time.
Laura Pethick is now studying Occupational Therapy at Canterbury Christ Church
University. Laura was a member of the inaugural Launceston College Devizes to
Westminster Kayak Race Crew. Her journey from novice to DW finisher was an
inspiration that demonstrated true resilience and determination. There were times
in the depths of winter training when Laura could barely keep her arms turning
due to the cold and the demanding challenges, but she never once gave even the
smallest hint of giving up. She battled through the warm up races, achieved a time
that allowed her to attempt the 4 days and 125 miles of the DW challenge, and
on Easter Monday of this year she stood on Westminster Bridge, exhausted but
euphoric, with a smile as wide as the Thames itself.
College Achievement
Governors’ Award
This award is for the College student, Year 7 to 13, during 2013-2014, who made the most progress. The
nominations are one per House from Causley, Hepworth, Rescorla and Trevithick.
George Bearns has always shown enthusiasm and a willingness in wanting to
learn. He has been a tutor representative and is now one of the House journalists.
He is always polite and he has gained great respect from across the curriculum.
He is a hard worker and deserves praise for working at or above all of his target
grades although at times he has had to face challenges. He always goes that
extra mile in order to do his very best. He is a great asset to both his house and
the College.
Max Harmer is currently in Year 12. Max has truly embraced the house system
and his commitment to Trevithick has surpassed all others. He has strived
to achieve his best in both his academic studies and learning outside of the
classroom. Max has successfully completed three Jubilee Challenge events and
will lead Harmer’s Hornets in 2015. He has tackled magnificently the challenges of
his studies and throughout has always been polite, considerate and kind. We were
delighted and proud of Max’s fabulous GCSE results and we nominate him for
being a true role model for others: he is an advocate for never giving up.
Katie Heard is an amazing student. She has been a role model for other students
in the College and Rescorla House. Katie was one of the hardest working pupils
in Year 11 and was rewarded with a phenomenal set of results. Katie exceeded
her target grades in no less than 8 of her subjects – this is testament to her
commitment to revision and studies throughout the year. Katie always set her
sights high and juggled skilfully her academic tasks with her house leadership
post.
Maisy Iggulden is currently in Year 10 and has been nominated for her outstanding
progress since joining Launceston College. She always strives to do her best and
is a wonderful role model to other students. Her dedication to her studies deserves
recognition: at the end of Year 9 her attainment across most subjects was either
level 7 or level 8. Alongside her academic efforts, she has represented the College
in many sporting activities, has been a house leader and is actively involved in
all Trevithick House challenges. Maisy is always prepared to have a go and her
positive attitude allows her to shine.
College Attainment
Principal’s Award
This award is for the student who has achieved exceptionally well in external examinations during 2013-14.
Philip Baker is currently in Year 13. He has an excellent work ethic and performs
at a consistently high level in all that he does. His pleasant and considerate
demeanour contributes to his productive relationships with students and staff. He
is an excellent example of what the ideal Launceston College student should be:
actively involved in his own success as well as that of the College community. He
will undoubtedly succeed in his chosen career path. This summer Philip achieved
a grade A in all 5 of his AS examinations in biology, chemistry, physics, maths
and further maths, this built on the 10 A*s, one grade A and level 2 first certificate
distinction that he had achieved at GCSE the previous year.
James Bate is currently in Year 12. He was a delight to have in any Year 11 class,
bursting with ideas and always comfortable to offer high level speculation about the
topics being studied. He particularly excelled in maths and science but engaged in
a sophisticated way across all subjects. He was a role model to those in Trevithick
and was the highest attaining student in that house. He achieved a string of A*
GCSE grades as well as an A at further mathematics, a higher level qualification.
Leisha Bond is currently in Year 12 studying A levels. A hard working, determined
student, Leisha achieved some fantastic results in her GCSE examinations.
Leisha embodies a strong work ethic and couples this with an imaginative mind.
She is thoughtful and conscientious, and beyond her successes in the classroom,
she acts as a mentor to younger students. Leisha is a positive role model to other
students and will undoubtedly continue to be successful in her studies.
Matt Dubey has been an asset to the College and has always been a role model
for other students. Matt has been nominated for this award for excellent attainment
in his 2014 GCSEs. Matt is Rescorla’s nomination for proving that hard work
clearly brings dividends. Matt should be extremely proud of what he has achieved
during his time at the College: A*s in all of his science exams was particularly
pleasing and especially when accompanied with a further 6 A grades. The future is
bright for Matt.
Sophie Williams, currently in Year 12, has always only wanted to produce her
very best. She has worked consistently hard throughout the curriculum. She has
a keen interest in music and is a very talented singer. Academically she has been
outstanding and achieved A* or distinctions in all of her GCSEs and she was the
highest attaining student in Hepworth this year. This is a fantastic achievement,
particularly so when she is actually a year younger than her ‘Year’ group.
GCSE Results 2014
This was a year of record GCSE achievement. Year 11 students achieved excellent results , with 58%
achieving 5 or more GCSE’s at A*-C grade including English and maths. Additionally 35% of students
achieved the English Baccalaureate (GCSE’s in English, mathematics, two sciences, languages and
humanities) the government’s benchmark, against a national average of 22%.
College Principal, Jack Jackson, commented “These results are testimony to the hard work and talents
of the students and the fantastic dedication of the teaching and support staff at the College. This
headline figure shows how well our students have performed compared to schools both locally and
nationally; we are very proud of them.”
