G-20 leaders call for more money, manpower and equipment to fight Ebola
BRISBANE, Australia
(TNS) — President Barack
Obama and other leaders of
the world’s largest economies
urged governments worldwide
to swiftly send money, healthcare workers and equipment
to combat the deadly Ebola
outbreak in the West Africa.
Some nations have contributed. But international health
experts have warned the
response remains dangerously
inadequate to meet the needs
in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra
Leone.
Obama for months has led
the effort to urge others to contribute — including this week
on his eight-day trip to China,
Myanmar and Australia —
but with limited success.
Australian Prime Minister
Tony Abbott said Ebola was
one of the “many terrible
problems” in the world that
leaders faced.

Iran wants U.N. sanctions
lifted quickly in nuke deal
WASHINGTON (TNS) —
The latest obstacle to the
U.S. and five other nations
finalizing a nuclear deal with
Iran by this month’s deadline
is an unexpected new demand from Tehran for quick
relief from United Nations
sanctions.
For most of the last nine
months of negotiations,
Iran and a bloc of six world
powers have focused on first
easing unilateral economic
sanctions imposed by the
U.S. and European nations.
Under the talks, if Iran accepts restrictions intended
to prevent it from developing a nuclear weapon, the
U.S. and other countries
would begin lifting sanctions
designed to cripple Iran’s oil
and financial industries.
The so-called P5-plus-1
bloc, consisting of the five
permanent U.N. Security Council members and
Germany, prefers to wait
until later to remove the
U.N. penalties, which were
imposed between 2006 and
2010. But in recent weeks,
Iran’s negotiators have
shifted ground and pressed
for quicker relief from the
U.N. measures.
Iran wants the sanctions
lifted in part to strip away
the international legitimacy
of the unilateral U.S. and
European penalties, analysts said. That would help
remove a wound to Iran’s
national pride and make it
easier for Tehran to argue
to key oil-importing nations
— such as China, India and
Turkey — that they can ignore the unilateral penalties
by the U.S. and others and
resume oil purchases.
Many countries consider
such nation-to-nation penalties illegal unless backed by
Security Council sanctions.
Gates Foundation joins to
produce contraceptive
SEATTLE (TNS) — As
part of its $1 billion effort to
make contraceptives more
accessible to women in the
developing world, the Bill &
Melinda Gates Foundation
is joining with a pharmaceutical company and other
aid groups to produce and
distribute a simpler version of
an old drug.
The injectable contraceptive Depo-Provera has long
been a favorite of women
in Africa and Asia. But getting the shots can require
a lengthy journey to a clinic
or hospital where a skilled
health worker must draw
the drug into a syringe and
inject it deep in a muscle.
In its new incarnation,
called Sayana Press, the
drug is packaged in a syringe
that consists of a plastic
bubble attached to a needle.
Administering the drug
requires only a shallow jab
and a squeeze of the bubble
— a process so easy it can
be done by minimally trained
workers in villages and even
in women’s homes.
