Market Day 2014
On Friday 24 October Year 10 Business Studies held
another successful Market Day. The students presented
five companies, who produced food items to tempt taste
buds. Year 10 students had to put together a business plan,
market their product and then produce and sell it. The tax
on the company profits and interest on loans enabled them
to donate $108 to the fundraising for the Cambodia Mission
Trip in 2015. Thank you to all who helped and supported
this great learning event, a little taste of the real business
world.
So, what did the students say about their experience…
Toastie Planet
“It’s an intriguing and truly satisfying experience running a
business”. John, Tom, Caleb, Ethan and Mikael
Slushies Unlimited
“Stressful but worth it.” Emma, Caitlin, Leesha and Melanie
Candy Sticks
“Making money with friends. #Payday.” Benjie, Leroy, Lily
and Taynen
Uncle Tavui Co.
“We learnt that running a business is harder than you expect
but the reward is greater than you can imagine.” Jack, Ezra, Mitchell and Elijah
Frosty Pops
“Market Day was a challenging but worthwhile experience. We all learnt a lot about being successful entrepreneurs.”
Miriama, Jenny, Courtney and Chris.
EnviroSchools 2014
In each of the classes students and teachers have been utilising
recycling bins well. The increase in our recycling efforts has enabled us
to get free native plants for the wetlands. We are part of the
Paper4trees with EERST which allows us to exchange paper and
cardboard recycling for native plants. We are very appreciative of the
sponsorship of the Waimakariri District Council of this programme.
Thank you also to the Year 12 Literacy class who planted out these
natives. On Tuesday this week most of the primary classes enjoyed Lesley Ottey from
Mastagard’s learning sessions on the differences we can each make to our environment. Please ask your children what they learnt with Lesley.
Congratulations to Hosea Watson (Boxing) who was
selected as a Finalist in the recent MainPower and
North Canterbury Sport & Recreation Trust 2014
Youth Sport Scholarships. Hosea is seen here
receiving a cheque for $2,500 from the Chairman of
MainPower.
Emily Sullivan will leave our school this year to
study at Victoria University. She has been awarded
an Overall Excellence Scholarship to the value of
$5,000 for the first year of her study which can be
put towards fees or accommodation costs in a hall of
residence. Great effort Emily!

Room 4—Music and Rhythm
This term Rms 1, 3 and 4 have had the opportunity to take swimming lessons at Dudley Pool (8
lessons) and enjoy some gymnastics / trampoline skills at Ice Tramp. These are both very valuable
outdoor education lessons and all the students enjoyed this time out of the classroom. It is amazing to
see the progress made in both the pool and how much their confidence has developed in all gym
activities.
Greetings
With Christmas not too far off and with some great technology deals on offer, I thought it would be timely to suggest the following
recommendations for tablets, netbooks and laptops brought by students into the school. With Ultrafast Broadband available from early
next year and with the increasing use of devices in the classroom, this would be a sound investment for your child’s education.
A device must have a minimum screen size of 10 inches and a minimum battery life of 8 hours/charge to be given permission to use at
school and to be given network access, after agreeing to
our regulations regarding the use of such devices at
Infuse-PTA
school. Some further recommendations (although not compulsory) are:
A separate keyboard (especially for Secondary Students)

Our staff have been very diligent in upskilling their ICT skills , and I see the use of BYOD

Extra News and Notices
At Ohoka School, sKids (safe kids
in daily supervision) we provide a
before school programme starting
at 7am - 9.00am, this includes
drop offs to schools in the
area. Our after school
programme starts at 3.00pm - 6.00pm and provides a pickup service
from schools in the area also. We'll feed them, help them with their
home work, let them play then do a fun activity with them so you
can rest assured that they are safe, secure and having the time of
their life. Please Note: You may be entitled to Oscar Subsidies
towards your sKids fees. Please discuss this with either the
programme manager or the owner. We care when you can’t be
there. We also have holiday programmes, these run from 8.00am 6.00pm Monday - Friday.

Dental Care over the Xmas ./ New Year School Holidays
Please note: There will be no Second Hand Uniform sale scheduled
for January 2015. If you require uniform please come into school
during office hours before the end of year or wait until the 2015
school terms during school hours.
NB: There is NO January 2015 second hand uniform sale!
The Community Dental Service will operate an emergency service
over the school holidays. This service is to provide relief of pain only and will not
undertake ‘routine’ treatment. The service will be available each working day
from 8:30am until 12:30pm for the following times: Monday, 5th January to
Friday, 30 January 2015 (excluding weekends and public holidays)
This service will operate by appointment only and if we are
unable to see your child, alternative options will be given. If
your child has dental pain as a result of an accident please
contact your dentist in the first instance. You can phone and
make an appointment for the emergency clinic by ringing
0800 84 69 83.
Itinerant Music Teachers are available at the school to teach
the following: Piano/keyboard, Drums, Guitar, Singing, Bass
Guitar, Flute and Clarinet/Sax. Brass – to be confirmed (i.e.
trumpet and trombone). Strings – Dependent on demand.
Fees for private lessons vary from $20.00 - $30.00 per halfhour lesson, and are paid directly to the teacher (not to the
school). In some areas, more than one student can be taught
at one time, and this can help reduce costs. The lessons occur
during the school terms and not the holidays.
The school can provide a guitar for your child to learn from at
school for lessons only so it is best to own or hire a guitar for
practice at home. Hiring an instrument first is the best idea as
you can always take it back if your child decides they want to
try something else. You can always buy the instrument later
when they have a real interest and some learned skill.
