Benefits of HSS in steel construction are based
on savings in value chain
• Steel price and processing costs will guide the selection of steels
• Weight savings in order of 20-40 % can be reached
• Costs savings in order of 10-20 %

Hollow section trusses
Optim 500MH - Optim 700MH
S500MH and S700MH hollow sections can be used in the same way as
S355-S420 hollow sections.
A SSAB design guide based on bending and K-joint tests has been prepared in
order to show that:
− Plastic member resistance can be used in cross section classes 1-2
− Tubular welded joint design can be carried out according to EN1993-1-8
and EN1993-1-12

Axial resistance of double grade hollow
sections
An extensive test series with
double grade hollow sections
have been carried out in
Lappeenranta technical university
Conclusion of the study is that a
buckling curve b for SSAB double
grade hollow sections can be
used instead of c within certain
geometrical limits that are
presented in the design guide
