IRISH EYES
November 10 - 15
2014
Clancy Salutes:
•
A “Big Irish Thank You” is extended to all those who have contributed to the BMCHS annual
Canned Food Drive. Everyone is asked to prayerfully consider a donation of 85 lbs. of food. All food
items will be given to the Greater Oklahoma City Regional Food Bank. The trucks will arrive on November 20 to pick up all donated items. Currently, 35,000 lbs. of food has been donated during the
first week!! Way to go Irish! The annual BMCHS Canned Food Drive began in 1987. Over the past
27 years, 930,000 lbs. of food have been collected and donated to the Food Bank. We are hoping to
break the one million pound level this year! Every student who has donated 85 lbs. of food is allowed
to wear jeans and a spirit top for the duration of the food drive. Please help support this great cause.
•
Hat’s Off to our own Sr. Stephanie Sanchez who launched the “pop top” project. Sr. Stephanie
answered the call for help from Sr. Rosemary Nyirumbe, who spoke to our
students last month. Sr. Nyirumbe works with “Pros for Africa”
helping girls in Uganda who have been kidnapped and terrorized by Joseph Kony and rebel soldiers. Lids are donated
by a can company. Sr. Stephanie and her student helpers
pop the rings off the top of the lid, keep the ring and return
the lids to the can company. The rings are transported to the girls in Uganda who
“crochet” them into purses, laptop covers and other items to sell.
•

Guthrie who visited our school last week. This week we welcome 7th grade students from St. Charles, St. Eugene, and St. John Nepomuk.

Clancy wishes to extend a special “Thank You” to all of our Veterans. The Sophomore Leadership Class will host our school’s annual Veterans Day Assembly Tuesday, November 11. The assembly begins at 9:50 am. All guests, especially veterans are welcome to attend.
•
Congratulations goes out to Caroline Carl, Allison Kelly, and Destiny Harman who were nominated to try out for the All-Region cheer. Destiny made the AllRegion cheer cut and moved forward into the All-State tryouts. Destiny then made the
All-State team. She is one of the top 16 cheerleaders from the West region and one
of the top 32 cheerleaders in the state. Destiny is the first cheerleader from Bishop
McGuinness to make the All-State team!!! Awesome job!!
•
Congratulations to the football team for their 19-7 victory over Piedmont on
senior night last Friday. The team now advances to the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. We will
travel to Ardmore next Friday, November 14 to face the Tigers. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 pm. Hope to see many of
you at the game.
• Hat’s off to Jake Sims who recently participated in the
American Royal National Hereford Show
in Kansas City. Jake and his heifer,
Breathless were awarded the American
Hereford SW Region Show Heifer of the
Year. •
Happy birthday to Danielle Coats who is celebrating a birthday this week!
Clancy Speaks:
Each year the senior class chooses a service project they believe impacts the lives of those in special need
within the greater Oklahoma City community. This year the seniors have chosen Peppers Ranch for their
project. Peppers Ranch is a foster care facility that was established to become a home for Oklahoma’s
abused and neglected children. The facility helps provide necessary resources and services to foster parents. The class will be at Peppers Ranch all day Saturday, November 15 coordinating games and activities
for the children at the facility.
Last Friday, November 7 marked the end of the fall semester 2nd six weeks grading period. Current grades
and teachers comments for all classes should be posted and available for view by Wednesday, November 12
through Power School.
Thanksgiving break is less than two weeks away. The school will be closed November 24-28 for Thanksgiving with classes resuming on Monday, December 1. Also, with the prospect of inclement weather already
looming, if we have to close school due to weather related concerns you will be notified through the local
TV channels or through Mr. Morton’s Remind 101. Students and parents can sign up for his Remind 101 by
texting @mortbmchs to 918-528-4909 on your cell phone.
Veteran’s Day Assembly
November 11, 2014
Veterans Day is approaching and the Leadership class of
Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School is hosting a 2014
Veteran’s Day Assembly to honor all veterans. We welcome
all veterans in the McGuinness community to come to our
assembly on November 11th from 9:55 to 10:25 am in the
Petuskey Auditorium. It will be a fun and exciting way to
be truly honored on Veteran’s Day. Coming in uniform is
optional and encouraged but is not required. If you know a
veteran interested in celebrating this day with us, please contact Leadership Class 28
at [email protected] for further information.
Thank you.

Attention Students
Out of School Forms
If you are going to be gone for a half a day or more for any reason (vacation, surgery, wedding, funeral, family coming in, college visit, ambassadoring, or whatever), and you know about it ahead of
time, please get an Out of School Form from the front office. These forms need to be signed by your
teachers, one of your parents/guardians, and an administrator and turned into the office before you
leave. If you find out you will be leaving that day, come in before school to get the form, get your
teachers and administrator to sign it, and your parent may sign it when they pick you up.

Health and Wellness News
Freely, freely you have received, so freely give!
Last week the local newspaper in Guymon published a story about a food
drive at the Junior High. They hope to collect 20,000 pounds of food to donate to “Loaves and Fishes,” a food bank that provides food to needy people in
the panhandle of Oklahoma.
My Mom was the star of the story because it so happens that she volunteers
every day for Loaves and Fishes. I guess you’d say she runs it! But, my Mom
is more than a volunteer. She calls it her “job.” I call it her mission. She likes Janet Stafford LPC
to quote Matthew 10:8. “Freely you have received, freely give.” She knows Health and Wellness
Counselor
God has blessed her and her family. This is one way she is able to freely give.
Years ago when I volunteered for Loaves and Fishes, we distributed 80 boxes of food each month.
Now they distribute about 280 boxes of food each month! How do they do it? Well, of course, they
do it in part through the efforts of people like my Mom who unashamedly and persistently ask local
businesses and those people with plenty to donate food and money in order to feed those in need.
But Loaves and Fishes also relies on the efforts of people like those here at BMCHS who have
contributed almost a million pounds of food to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma over the years.
The Regional Food Bank sends truckloads of food to Guymon twice a month that is organized and
distributed by Loaves and Fishes.
So, part of the food you donate in our canned food drive at BMCHS might be placed on a truck
bound for Guymon, Oklahoma, sorted and boxed up by my Mom, and distributed to a family that is
hungry. Isn’t it interesting how we are all connected.
So be generous! For one reason you have been truly blessed. Remember, freely you have received,
freely give. And for another reason, I know for a fact the food we donate will be put to good use in
Guymon and in places just like Guymon all over the state.

About College Corner
Here you will find information about colleges that will have a representative visit
our school in the coming weeks. There are a ton of wonderful colleges out
there, many of which are hidden gems. The college reps will spend
approximately 30 minutes with interested students to talk with them about the
admissions process and the great things happening at their university. Visit our
“College Counseling & Guidance” page to learn more about the colleges that
will visit our school.
