IRISH EYES
February 23 - 28
2015
*****FRESHMAN REGISTRATION FOR
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2015 HAS BEEN
POSTPONED TO TUESDAY, MARCH 3, 2015*****
Clancy Salutes:
•
Congratulations to Coley Lee who was selected as the Bishop McGuinness February Student of the Month! Coley was nominated by faculty members and his peers
for his commitment and loyalty to the school.
•
Congratulations go to the Wrestling team who competed at regionals in Duncan
last weekend. Senior Brent Wilson was crowned champion at 152 lbs and junior
Zach Straughn won 3rd. Also placing was junior Nate Connelly at
5th place. It has been 23 years since the Irish have crowned a regional champion so special congratulations go out to Brent Wilson.
Brent and Zach will be representing the Irish in the State Wrestling
tournament to be held on February 27 and 28 at the State Fairgrounds Arena. Nate Connelly will be an alternate.
•
Hat’s Off to the thirty-one members of the BMCHS National Honor Society who played
games and hosted a cookie party for the young residents at the Pauline E. Mayer Shelter located
off Western Avenue. The Pauline E. Mayer Shelter is one of two such shelters in the state of Oklahoma that provides a safe place for children who have been removed from their homes due to
abuse or neglect. NHS members enjoyed getting to know the fourteen elementary-aged children,
hearing their laughter, and seeing their smiles. It was a moving and rewarding evening, and NHS
looks forward to helping the shelter in the future.
•
Congratulations to the Irish Forensic Team on their success this
past weekend at the 2015 Salina Central HS TOC Invitational in Kansas! Advancing 8 of 12 entries to the Final Round, the team finished 3rd in the
tournament out of 32 competing schools, and received 4 bids to the 2015
National Individual Events Tournament of Champions. Participating members included: Senior Allison Hopfer, Junior Evan Clear, and Sophomores Madison Hart and
Cheyenne Martin. Way to Suit Up, Irish!!!
• Hat’s Off to the Swim team for their performance at the state tournament last weekend. The Boys finished 17th while the Girls finished 18th. All
swimmers set Personal Records during the state championships. Special
Congratulations to the Boys 200 Freestyle Relay team of Chase Skelton,
Hayden Crandall, Joseph Romano and Ben
Yokell for finishing in 6th place. Other leaders
were Monica Borders, 9th place in the 100 Butterfly and 11th place
in the 200 Individual Medley; Ben Yokell, 15th place, 200 Individual
Medley; Olivia Head, 15th place, 50 Freestyle; Chase Skelton, 15th
place, 50 Freestyle; and the Girls 200 Freestyle Relay team of Olivia
Head, Hannah Reen, Gabby Dube and Monica Borders for their 11th place finish.
•

week. On Thursday, the Girls will play Yukon at Southmoore at 6:30 pm. If they win, they will
play Saturday at 1:30 pm at Southmoore. The Boys will play Yukon Friday at 6:30 pm at Edmond
Memorial. If they win, they will play Saturday at 6:30 pm at Edmond Memorial. Hope to see you
at the games!
•
Congratulations to the Irish Bowling team for their 2nd place finish last weekend at Regionals. The team advances to state in Tulsa next Saturday. Team members are
seniors LeaRose LaPorte, Kate Sine, Anna Egas, Christina Schrantz, Lisa Tran
and freshmen Elaine Selid and Savannah Hanke. Thanks to coach Alex Genheimer for all his work with the team.
•
The first ever Google Summit meeting for the state of
Oklahoma was held at BMCHS last Saturday and Sunday. McGuinness was
selected by Google to present the many educational components of Google
to aide teachers in the classroom. Highly qualified presenters came from
across the country to make presentations to over 400 workshop attendees. A “Big Thanks” is
extended to our Director of Instruction Technology, Mrs. Rebekah Hightower and Mr. Justin Tyler Moore, Network Administrator for all the work preparing our school for this highly acclaimed
event. I am proud to say that several of our teachers were asked by Google to present at this
event.
•
We welcomed over 100 middle school students to “Feeder
Leader Day” last Friday. Each one of our traditional feeder schools
participated in this Student Council led event. Students took part in
various activities throughout the day. A “Big
Thanks” goes out to the Student Council
Executive Board and Student Council sponsors Mrs. Rebecca Damron-Whitehead and Mrs. Rachel Dowell
for all their work on this event.
•
A “Big Thanks” is extended to the many incoming freshman and their parents who attended “Curriculum Night” last Thursday evening. The evening presentation was coordinated by Dr.
Andrew Worthington and Freshman Counselor, Laura O’Hara. Clancy also wishes to thank our
Department Chairs for making presentations.

Congratulations to the following staff members who celebrate birthdays this week: Ray
Copeland, Tondrell Durham, Robert Epps and Jamie Lane.
Clancy Speaks:
I was not in school for a good part of last week as I was attending the National Association of Secondary
School Principals Conference in San Diego. Attending anything in San Diego is always tough duty, but I
did manage to attend several informative sessions ranging from Advanced Placement curriculum to tech-
nological advances in the classroom and the state of education in America.
After three days of meetings, I came away feeling very proud about what we have and are accomplishing in our school. So many public school districts are fighting such a large bureaucracy within the federal
and their own state and district government they feel powerless to affect change in their own school. I
applaud the efforts of great success stories of schools that get many good things accomplished despite
the road blocks placed in their path.
I sat in on a two hour presentation regarding Common Core, and left the meeting thankful for the many
aspects of Common Core we have been using in our Catholic schools for many years. I was also thankful that we are not trying to adapt Common Core principals to state mandated tests. Many schools
across the country are forced to spend weeks preparing students for a test while the rich experience
they would have investigating their own curriculum is lost.
I also set in on a two hour presentation on Advanced Placement classes. Advanced Placement classes
are recognized by the College Board as a leading predictor of success in college. We offer 16 Advanced Placement classes at McGuinness and numerous Pre AP classes. Entrance into our school’s
AP courses is dependent on ability and interest. Our AP pass rate and number of tests given vs. our
student population ranks with the most prestigious school in the country. Last year, McGuinness had 2
National AP Scholars, 22 AP Scholars with Distinction, 19 AP Scholars with Honor and 36 AP Scholars.
Our AP program obviously is rigorous and allows many students the ability to earn college credits before
entering college. The question we must look at going forward is should we open these classes to more
students?
