WELCOME WORDS
A very warm welcome to delegates, speakers and exhibitors joining us for the 4th
Pharmaceutical Flow Cytometry and Imaging Conference organised by ELRIG. I
am especially pleased to be able to welcome you back to the newly named Sir
David Jack Centre for Research and Development at GSK Ware, a site steeped
in tradition and recognized for its impressive history of developing new and
innovative medicines.
Building on previous meetings, our exciting 2014 scientific
program explores new advances in flow cytometry and
high content imaging and their increasing application to
academic research and pharmaceutical drug discovery.
In recent years, BioPharma R&D has experienced
considerable changes in scientific direction with a move
towards more relevant phenotypic and human disease
systems for drug discovery and lead optimisation.
In parallel, therapeutic areas such as oncology and
infectious diseases are shifting to more immunologybased disease modulation strategies. Over the next
two days, a superb group of world-class speakers will
discuss capability development in high content imaging
microscopy and flow cytometry technologies and
describe how new solutions such as mass cytometry
and super resolution imaging are continuing to advance
our understanding of cell and pathway function to better
connect targets, pathways and disease biology. The
scientific program will be complimented by a poster
session and vendor exhibition which will allow attendees
to explore the latest developments in reagents and
instrumentation in this rapidly growing research area.
James Pilling (AstraZeneca), Ben Powney (Eisai), Theo
Dare (GlaxoSmithKline) and Jennifer Hincks (Huntingdon
Life Sciences) together with Dermot Boylan and Liz
Quinn from ELRIG for putting together an impressive
two day scientific program. ELRIG is a not-for-profit
organisation whose main objective is to provide an
open communication forum for member education and
networking. They are particularly proud to be able to
provide free delegate attendance at the conference,
which would not be possible without the generous
support of the sponsors and exhibitors. We are grateful
to them all and especially to our main sponsors this year,
GSK, Eurofins Bioanalytical Services and SBI2 (Society of
Biomolecular Imaging and Informatics).
I hope that you all enjoy the symposium over the next
two days.
King regards,
Dave Powell
Director of Biological Sciences
GlaxoSmithKline
The organisation of this meeting required hard work
and dedication from many individuals. In particular,
I would like to thank the scientific committee of Rob
Jepras (GlaxoSmithKline), David Lanham (Eurofins),
