Naming our Parks The OPT team will soon be conducting a community survey to understand community views about new and proposed names for OPT’s parks and 2014 Relay for Life! GREENFIELDS Oran Park Town Newsletter October - November 2014 reserves. From 1962, Oran Park Raceway successfully hosted many highprofile motorsport events, including the Australian Grand Prix and V8 Supercars Championship, before its closure in 2010. As there is a significant motorsport history in Oran Park, the OPT team commemorates this by naming places after famous motorsport personalities associated with the successful raceway. Recently, eleven names including living and non-living sportspeople were put forward to the Geographical Names Board (GNB) for approval. As the GNB does not often approve naming places after people who are still living, two names (Wayne Gardner and Mick Doohan) were not approved. However, the OPT team believes that these personalities deserve recognition due to their outstanding motorsport achievements and roles in helping create the history and legacy of the Oran Park Raceway. Through the community survey, the OPT team would like to measure community support for naming the two parks after living people. Watch out for the community survey team to register your views about the names for OPT’s parks and reserves. More information including the survey’s link will be available in the next What’s On in November.
