From our ISSUE 19 31 October 2014

From our
give thanks to our founders!
Principal
Founders’ Day was also an opportunity to
congratulate and pay tribute to Mrs Mary
Connor, who has been at St Oran’s College for
forty years. Mrs Connors tutor group seniors
paid tribute to her with the following:
Tēnā Koutou Katoa
Last week we celebrated the founding of our
school with our annual Founders’ Day service.
We are a school of special character, formed
by the Presbyterian Church to provide a
Christian based education. This year’s Presbyterian schools’ conference theme was ‘Hewn
from the rock’ and based upon the following
passage from Isaiah “Harken to me, ye that
follow righteousness, ye that seek the LORD:
look into the rock whence ye are hewn, and
to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged”
King James Bible, Isaiah 51.1.
The theme reminds us of our beginning 55
years ago. Without the foresight of our
Founders we would not have the opportunities that we have today. We are grateful and
“We have been lucky enough to be in Mrs
Connor’s tutor group for nearly 7 years, our
whole time at St Oran’s, but that is just 17.5%
of Mrs Connor’s time here. She has now been
waking up every morning, pulling herself out
of bed to teach at St Oran’s College for a
whopping 10,000 days. This is a reflection of
the dedication, commitment and effort she
has put into her job. She always makes each
lesson new and exciting, sharing her many
passions. She has become like a second mum
to all of us, every morning asking how we are,
talking to us about everything from work, to
boys, and everything in between.
It has been an absolute privilege being taught
by you, especially in my last year and being
welcomed by you each morning in tutor
group will be something I will miss and I’m
sure many of the girls as they leave. You have
inspired us and opened up opportunities
such as always making sure geography is not
always theory. The Geography trips are the
highlight of the year. Your humour and
knowledge make geography classes welcoming and enjoyable. So again, thank you very
much for the passion you put into teaching
because it definitely makes a real difference.
A teacher takes a hand, opens a mind and
touches a heart and Mrs Connor you’ve done
that for all of those you’ve taught. Thank you
and congratulations” - Tutor group seniors of
C001 - Sam, Emma, Brooke and Amelia.

Junior Examinations
NCEA External Examinations
Year 7 and 8 – Common tests are held for core subjects in the usual 50 minute classes. It is a
good opportunity for students to begin to develop useful examination strategies. Each faculty will have the tests at their convenience.
This is the last newsletter before the seniors leave for exam study. By now your
daughter should have a study programme well under way. This will help her use her
time wisely.
Year 9 and 10 – These examinations are important especially for Year 10 as they move into
NCEA Level 1 courses next year. This year we will be offering again scholarship for a Year 10
student. The “Rev. Nancy Burgess Memorial Scholarship” is named after Mrs Nancy Burgess, Principal of St. Oran’s College from 1969 to 1982. The scholarship will be in the form
of a Junior Dux Award, the value of which will be attendance dues for the following academic year. This will be calculated on the student’s performance in the four core subjects—
English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.
NCEA examinations begin for St Oran’s College on Monday 10th November. Your daughter received her Admission Slip on Tuesday. Please keep this in a secure place as she
will need to bring it to each exam. If she forgets it she must see Ms Gibbs in her office
well before the examination. SHE MUST HAVE HER ADMISSION SLIP TO ENTER THE
EXAMINATION ROOM.
The examinations begin at 9.30 am and 2.00pm. Most of the examinations will be
in the school hall and the smaller ones in the dance room and chapel. It is important that your daughter arrives at least 20 minutes before the examination
begins, in correct school uniform.
Students may bring into the exam room:
1.
2.
3.
Candidates who cannot sit the examination because of sickness, broken limbs or a family bereavement must contact Ms Gibbs to apply for a Derived Grade before the examination begins. This grade will be taken on evidence the school has on that standard eg:
The students school examination mark. Application must be made through the school
on the special forms available for that purpose. A medical specialist or counsellor will
also need to complete a section of this form.
If you have any concerns or further questions, please do not hesitate to phone Ms
Gibbs at school on extension 825 or [email protected].

Year 13 Students Attending University:
Last term we attended an
event held by the Ministry of
Women's Affairs at the National Library. This event was celebrating the 121st anniversary
of women's suffrage and highlighted female leaders in innovation. We got to hear from
four ladies who had various
positions such as a game developer, a university lecturer and
a business executive who is
also an ex-student of St Oran's.
Hearing the speakers was extremely interesting and gave
perspective to the position of
women in the workplace. It is
an opportunity that we are
both glad we took.
Remember to tick the box allowing the University to check your NCEA results in mid-January.
Otherwise you will not be automatically admitted in mid-January. Hence it will take longer.
Remember to look on-line for information, but make use of the University Liaison Officers as
they are there to help. If you have any questions contact them.
Remember to apply early for student loans and allowances before the 16 th December to
guarantee funding before studying – www.studylink.govt.nz
Remember you can also apply for scholarships throughout the year. Just check the Breakout
website at your local library.
Remember that University Support services are there to help you when you start next year,
use them. They provide a wide range of services, like uniprep, orientation workshops, peer
assisted study sessions, on-line services etc and much more.
And most of all have fun!

9th Annual Golf Tournament - Friday 14 November 2014
Countdown: 2 weeks to go until Golf Day
We need your help to make this Golf Day a success!
Baking:
One of the highlights for the golfers is our fabulous selection of home baking.
Your daughters in Years 7 to 10 will receive a disposable plate in their tutor groups next week. Parents please look out for it.
We hope that you will return the plate with something homemade, either sweet or savoury on it.
As an alternative to the home baking, you are welcome to send other items such as crackers, cheese, gherkins and olives.
These will need to be delivered to the school office on the morning of Friday 14 November – Golf Day. Thank you.
Volunteers:
Can you spare some time to help out during the day on Friday 14 November?
We especially need helpers early in the morning and some ‘muscle’ to help pack up at the end of the day.
It’s not hard work and it’s a fun and friendly relaxed atmosphere. We would love to have your support.
To volunteer please contact Mandy Stewart at [email protected] or txt/call her on 021 467 413.
