As part of the program the City of Greater Bendigo Healthy Communities program, we have been given a scooter and helmet to award to a student. All students who walked to school every day during the program, will be in the running for it. The draw will take place at th assembly on Monday 17 November. It is a wonderful habit to establish and I would encourage all students to continue to walk each day. Even walking from the St Aiden’s Road gate or being dropped off at the Crook Street entrance and walking up the path is great. It would be lovely to see more bikes in our new bike shed also! The ‘Hands Up’ program will continue so keep walking and riding to school. Thank you. The Bendigo and District Concert Band will also be playing. Each year it has been an enjoyable community evening, and it would be terrific to see a large representation from our school community in attendance. Families are welcome to arrive from 6:30pm to share a picnic tea on the artificial grass area. The carols will start at 7:30pm. More information re planning will follow but please diary this event now. Dear Parents/Carers Grade 5 Camp As is usually the case we had very positive feedback following our Grade 4 and 5 Camps at Weekaway last week. The following is part of an email I received in relation to the grade 5 camp. Pre-loved Uniforms We often have need for second hand items of school uniform. If you are going through your cupboards and have some used items that are in good condition, they can be donated to the school through the office. Just wanted to let you know what a fantastic Grade 5 Camp KPS had this year. Hats off to Jeremy for doing an excellent job with organising the camp, I know a lot of background work goes into organising one. There were very few issues and this was as a result of good planning by Jeremy I am sure! The teaching staff were great, I really enjoyed the way they interacted with the kids and provided guidance, support and discipline when required. Even after they had been at it for over 12 hours a day they still managed to give kids one-on-one time or group time when they could have just sent them to bed! It would be great if more parents could experience a school camp, as it reveals a lot about student/teacher relationships and how committed the teachers are to their students. Attending the camp has assured me that we have the right teachers, teaching the right students and that Kennington is a great school. Education Maintenance Allowance 2015 It is really important for parents/carers to be aware that there will be no EMA in 2015. This will mean that on Book Collection Day 2015 all costs will need to be covered by you. Family Accounts To help with your books and fees on book collection day nd (Thursday 22 January, 2015) parents are welcome to come to the office anytime from now on, between 8:00am to 4:15pm to put money on their family accounts to help with their 2015 payments. Money you put on your account this year will be carried forward to next year. Webpage The KPS webpage also provides extra information and is updated regularly. www.kenningtonps.vic.edu.au. The current webpage is changing format so may not be as up to date as usual over the next month. We appreciate your patience during this upgrade process. Energy Breakthrough The Link The Link is the main form of communication with you and the school. The Link will be sent home with the youngest child in each family or look on www.kenningtonps.vic.edu.au. The Link is published on Thursdays. Sometimes, where we need to ensure that a piece of information gets to all of our school community, a notice will be repeated in a number of newsletters. The RACV Energy Breakthrough is an exciting annual program for students, teachers, parents and local industries to work together to design and construct a machine which represents an 'energy breakthrough'.. As you are aware we have two teams representing Kennington Primary School. Our teams of Grade 5 and 6 students have been training really hard in their Human Powered Vehicle, including many after school and weekend sessions. They have been supported by Mr Hague and Miss Rady. The event is next week and the teams will be camping in Maryborough for two nights. Regards Glenda Miller Principal Nutbush Fundraiser nd On Saturday 22 November our school community is hosting a Guinness Book of Records attempt for having the most people doing the Nutbush at the same time. Flyer attached. Tickets now available from the office. At lunch times we have had many students leading, and many others following, Nutbush practice!!! Carols at Kennington Primary School This year, we will again have our Carols at Kennington as an end of year community gathering. This event will be held on th Thursday 11 December. All grade levels will be performing a carol. Our school singing choir and our school signing choir 3 Rock, Paper, Scissors Competition Chinese Immersion Program The Annual Rock Paper Scissors Championships has commenced. Every child in the school competes for the honour of being KPS Grand Champion. The winner is awarded a gold medal and the runner up, a silver medal. Each Class Champion plays off in the semi-finals and the grandfinal is played out in front of a live audience st of nearly 1000 people, at assembly on Monday 1 December. This is a game of skill and in the past there have been serious competitions between Grade Preps and Grade 6s. Age has proved irrelevant. Every Tuesday we have English language sessions at Kennington Primary School for the visiting Chinese students. We have 10 Chinese students from Kennington, Spring Gully, Eppalock and Quarry Hill who participate in the program. During the sessions the students have been learning about Australian animals. So far the students have investigated the kangaroo, koala, a wombat and an emu. At the end of each session they made a felt fridge magnet. The students have sung along to Home Among the Gum Tree and learnt some Aussie slang: G’day, arvo, ta, and see-ya. This week the Chinese students looked at Aboriginal art and decorated boomerangs. Next week we will fly the boomerangs. Annual General Meeting – Parents & Friends’ 2015 st Parents and Friends' AGM will be held on Monday 1 December, at 9:15am in the conference room (near the office). A general meeting will follow the meeting, as well as morning tea. All positions for the committee will be declared vacant and the school community can nominate for positions on the 2015 P&F Committee. The P&F is a vital committee for the school, its main role is to raise valuable funds for our school. It is also a good chance to meet other members of the school community, as well as keeping informed about your school. Please consider being involved in the P&F for 2015. Nomination forms are at the back of the LINK. Instrumental Music Concert Thursday 4th December 5:30pm – 8:00pm The December Instrumental Music Concert will be held in the new BER (F Block) building on Thursday 4th December. In order to provide an opportunity for our students to perform, we will again have a combined concert featuring a mixture of beginner and experienced students. Congratulations to our Artists of the Moment. This group of students has created outstanding work and can be enormously proud of their efforts. White circles were printed on black paper to prepare a background. Once dry, pastels were used to add colour and rainbows to form the illusion of bubbles. Fine detail was added with white ink pens. We think you will agree that these beautiful bubbles really do seem to float on the page. Fabulous work from Grades 2, 3 and 4. The concert will commence at 5:30pm and conclude by 8:00pm. The order of performances is provided as a guide. My aim is to make people aware that the RSPCA houses lost, abandoned and sick animals and is constantly requiring food to feed them. Guests, including family members, will require a ticket. Guest tickets may be purchased from the school office from Monday 17th November at a cost of $4.00 per ticket. If you have any unopened cat, dog or rabbit food, please send it to school with your child and ask them to place it in the tub in the office foyer. The evening will consist of a Principal Welcome, student performances, presentations to all Grade 6 students, and presentations to award winners. We look forward to the evening being a celebration of the completion of primary school for our Grade 6 students. All donations will be delivered to the RSPCA in December.
