th 28 IDC National Conference Announcement and Call for Papers 10-11 November 2014 Conference Venue India International Centre Main Building, Auditorium, 40 Max Mueller Marg, New Delhi 110 003 Organized by International Development Centre Foundation (IDC Foundation) COLLABORATORS / SPONSORS School of Planning and Architecture New Delhi Taru, Leading Edge Pvt. Ltd. Grass Roots Research & Creation India (P) Ltd. & Rotary Club of Delhi Regency About the Conference: Global warming, a real phenomenon today, is large enough to cause climate change. Global warming is defined as an increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere, especially a sustained increase great enough to cause changes in the global climate. The impacts of climate change even with a two-degree rise in average temperature, is being felt all over the world. India is a large emerging economy with a great variety of geographical regions, biodiversity and natural resources. However, the country is one of the most vulnerable to climate change risks worldwide. Millions of people in urban and rural areas across India, many of whom are poor, will be affected by climate change. The vulnerability of human settlements increases by rising sea levels, inland floods, frequent and stronger tropical cyclones, periods of increased heat, phenomena like Urban Heat Island (UHI) and the spread of diseases. Thus climate change may worsen access to basic services and the quality of life. National and international governments are taking various initiatives to mitigate the changing climate through control of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions, calling for the need of adaptation (adjustment in natural or human systems in response to actual or expected climatic stimuli or their effects) and building up of resilience (capacity to cope with extreme and/or sudden shock and bounce back to the state of normalcy) to combat and cope with extreme events and other impacts of climate change. Keeping this in view IDC foundation is organizing a 28th National Conference in the month of November, 2014 at IIC, New Delhi to deliberate on this subject and suggest strategic steps especially for adapting to Climate Change and building resilience in all habitations in our country, which could be implemented by the citizens, authorities and the administration through education and training. Aims and Objectives: a) To deliberate on the subject of making India Climate Resilient and strategic steps especially for adapting to Climate Change and building resilience in all habitations in our country. b) To understand Climate Change and its impact on various sectors like Agriculture, Forestry, Biodiversity, Water Resources, Rural and Urban Development, Disaster management, Health and Energy c) It should inform science, society, information technology and capacity building initiatives in the country so that all sections of society are made aware of the possible impacts of Climate Change and the necessity for adaptation d) Students, citizens, authorities and administration should adopt resilient strategies through education, training and practices to make India Climate Resilient Key Messages: Quality of life will be particularly affected by the impacts of Climate Change especially on water resources, agriculture, biodiversity, forests and coastal zones. Health of humans and animals will be affected by rise in temperature, injuries from extreme events and re-emerging infectious diseases besides exacerbation of chronic diseases. Climate change will impact urban areas by threatening water resources, food security causing Urban Heat Islands and aggravating heat strokes. The livelihood of poor in rural and urban India is at maximum risk from climate change since many species of plants and animals on which the poor depend for their food, fuel and fibre will be lost permanently. Climate change adaptation is fraught with uncertainty because climate variables are hard to project. Given the current uncertainty in the future climate, adaptation and resilience become the two most crucial elements of sustenance and development. Participants: Professionals from Universities, Research Institutions, Researchers and concerned persons from Government Organizations, Municipal Corporations, Environmentalists, Industry representatives, NGOs, Service Clubs, Pollution Control Boards, Academic Institutions and health professionals from medical, paramedical and nursing departments of all medical and paramedical institutions.
