celebrating his birthday Saturday,
and Ugo Okam, a 7-0 transfer from

WILDCAT BASKETBALL INSIDER
Hosted by B-CU Ast. AD Bryan Harvey, the Wildcat Basketball Insider
takes to the air highlighting both the
Wildcat and Lady Wildcat basketball
programs.
Head Coaches Gravelle Craig and
Vanessa Blair-Lewis discuss recent
developments with theirteams and
preview he upcoming games as well
as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship race.
The show will air weekly on Sun

CATEYE Network through BCUathletics.com.
2 Maurice Taylor closed out the 2013 11 Tony Kynard’s assists against
-14 season with consecutive doubledouble games. He had 22 points and 10
rebounds in a win at Florida A&M and
18 points and 14 rebounds against Coppin State in the MEAC tournament.
Trinity was fifth best single-game assist
total in program history. It was also the
most assists in a game since Kiki Picard
dished out 12 against Coppin State in
2003.
17-22 The length of two losing
7 Clemmye Owens’ 7 steals against
North Florida was the fifth highest single-game total in B-CU history. It’s also
the sixth best in the nation during the
2013-14 season.
8 The number of players B-CU had
over the final 12 games. The Wildcats
went 5-7 with the shorthanded line-up
streaks B-CU snapped during MEAC
conference play in the 2013-14 season.
B-CU endured a 17-game losing streak,
which was the longest active in the nation until B-CU downed UMES 69-63 on
Jan.25. The Wildcats ended a 22-game
conference road losing streak on Feb.
10 when they downed defending MEAC
tournament champion North Carolina
A&T 72-71
33 Mikel Trapp’s career-high
against South Carolina State that tied
him with Syracuse’s Trevor Cooney for
the National high on February 3.
CAUGHT IN A TRAPP: Redshirt Senior Mikel Trapp emerged as a
game-changing three-point last season. Here are some key numbers
for the Blair, S.C. product:
TRAVEL-A LOT TO SEE
GAMES WITH A 3: 29 of the past 32
RANKING ON ALL-TIME 3-POINT LIST: 9TH (121)
RANKING ON ALL-TIME 3-POINT PERCENTAGE LIST: 9TH (.340)
While not as epic as the 2013-14 Wildcat odyssey of 12
straight games and 52 days between home games, this
year’s team will rack up some mileage this season
travelling to road contest.
STRONG DEBUT: As a freshman along with Trapp, Clemmye Owens
led the Wildcats in scoring with an average of 11.3 points per game.
Only two other freshman have done that:
Johnnie Allen

Coppin State 85, B-CU 78
March 11, 2014
NORFOLK, Va.— Three times Bethune-Cookman worked its way back to a
tie in Tuesday’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament first-round
game with Coppin State, and three times the Eagles responded as the
Wildcats dropped a 75-68 decision at the Scope.
Clemmye Owens scored 22 points, and Maurice Taylor doubled-doubled
(18 points, 14 rebounds ) for the second straight game, but it wasn’t
enough to keep the Wildcats’ season ending with a 7-25 record.
Michael Murray scored 24 points as the Eagles (11-19) scored the final
seven points and advanced to Wednesday’s quarterfinals against Hampton.
Bethune-Cookman managed a 68-68 tie on an Owens lay-up with 2:17 to
go, but didn’t score again.
Taylor’s 14 rebounds was a B-CU MEAC tournament game record, eclipsing
the old mark of 12 set by Michael Williams against Morgan State in 2003.
Freshman point guard Tony Kynard’s nine assists was also a B-CU tournament record, eclipsing the eight of Johnny McClenton against Howard in
2008.

@BCUHoops Retools and Reloads For 2014-15
By Andreas Butler

After experiencing a 7-25 campaign in 2013-14, BethuneCookman Men’s Basketball head coach Gravelle Craig recognized immediately what it would take to get the Wildcats back
on track.
“We’ve added depth and size. We needed to get better, bigger
and deeper at each position,” Craig said. “When we went recruiting, I told our coaches we needed to recruit starters. The
guys we brought in have a chance to start.”
Last season’s experiences included a 17-game losing streak and
finishing out the year with just eight healthy players. While
“looking forward to putting last year behind us”, Craig did find Ricky Johnson returns after missing most of the 2013-14
some silver linings.
season with concussion-related symptoms.
“If you look at the positives, we got some people experience,”
Craig said. “I have probably five guys who started last year who
may not start this year.
“We expect good things form all our new guys,” Craig added.
“We recruited starters at every position. We have a lot of team
competition.”
One of the most touted newcomers is 6-foot-8 junior power
forward/center and Toledo transfer Delino Dear.
He can play either the four or five spot on the floor,” Craig said.
Newcomers Denzil Dulin (Dundalk CC) and Jeffon Powell (Cecil
CC) have also impressed the coaching staff.
Returning guards Ricky Johnson and Mikel Trapp are excited
about their new teammates.
“They will make a big impact,” Johnson said. “We have no freshmen, and these guys all played elsewhere. We have more of a
post presence as well.”
“It was a basketball decision to come here. This is a great opportunity,” said Dear. “I can score on the block, which can open

symptoms.
“It feels great to be able to play the game that you love,” Johnson said. “It’s great to be able to lace-up my sneakers and be a
part of the team.”
“He is back healthy and looking good. He is an experienced player that knows our system. He is another coach on the floor,”
Craig said of Johnson.
Craig may use Trapp, who was named Second Team Preseason
All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, in ways other than for his
three-point shooting.
“I might play him at the point some,” Craig said. “He knows
what we’re doing.”
Clemmye Owens led the Wildcats in scoring last along with
Mikel Trapp.
Trapp welcomes the additional responsibility.

“I just go out there and do whatever is needed,” he said.
B-CU also returns sophomore guard Clemmye Owens who was
an All-MEAC rookie selection, and led the team in scoring last
season with an average of 11.3 points per game.
CONSECUTIVE DOUBLE FIGURE REBOUNDING
“He has gotten better,” Craig said of Owens. “He grasps everything better, and he is taking better shots. He’s becoming more
efficient. You can see the difference.”
Senior guard Maurice Taylor, sophomore guard Tony Kynard
and senior center Travis Elliott also return to the B-CU lineup.
They, along with newcomers 6-foot-6 junior forward Quinton
Brewer (Gordon CC) and 7-foot graduate center Ugo Okam
(Harvard) round out an experienced roster.
The Wildcats were picked to finish 10th in the MEAC this season.
“It’s a catch-22,” Craig said. “I think it’s easier to motivate the
players. I would be motivated either way. We can use this to
show the team what people think of them. The players have
incentive,” commented Craig.
The Wildcats' season may come down to two things.
“We need to stay healthy, and we need guys to step up,” said
Craig.

Orleans 65 — Adrien Coleman had a 20-point, 10rebound double-double, and Alex Smith scored 10 of
his 14 points in the second half as Bethune-Cookman
rallied for a 71-65 road victory over New Orleans at
Lakefront Arena. It was B-CU’s its first nonconference road victory since a December 2008 win
at Jacksonville.

CATS OVERSEAS….
Former Bethune-Cookman basketball standouts Adrien Coleman and Garrius Holloman reconfirmed on October 9 what
that Disney World ride has been saying all these years.
THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH OHIO, EXCEPT THE SNOW
AND THE RAIN: In addition to producing four NBA Hall of
Famers and a shooting certain guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Ohio has also been a strong recruiting area for the current B-CU basketball team. In addition, the coaching staff
and support staff has connections to the Buckeye State:
It IS a small world, after all, when former teammates from a
small HBCU are on the same basketball court again literally
an ocean away from home facing off in Finland.

Ricky Johnson (St. Vincent-St. Mary HS)
Holloman posted a double-double of 30 points and 10 rebounds for Lappeenranta NMKY, while Coleman had 17
points and seven rebounds for Korihait, who trailed by three
after the first period but pulled in the third quarter.

Since that meeting, Holloman has rejoined Kataja Basket, a
team in the Korisliiga, Finland’s top league, for the Euro Challenge. Coleman and Korihait are undefeated (8-0) in the First
Division.
STARLING DOWN UNDER: After
his quest to play Australian football was sidelined, and then having the coach who signed him to
play basketball dismissed, Starling’s resolve – added with his
basketball ability – has resulted in
him making Central Australian
Basketball League (CABL) history for his Woodville Warrior
club. Starling, in addition to being named league MVP by the
players, became the first Woodville player to receive the
league’s highest honor – the Woollacott Medal, voted on by
the league’s referees to recognize the “fairest and most brilliant player” at the State League level. He capped off the
season with a 36-point, six-rebound effort as the Warriors
claimed the CABL championship with an 80-78 win over the
West Adelaide Bearcats.

ABOUT BETHUNE-COOKMAN UNIVERSITY:
Bethune-Cookman University or B-CU is a private historically black university in
Daytona Beach, Florida.
Mary McLeod Bethune founded the Daytona Educational and Industrial Training
School in 1904. The school underwent several stages of growth and development
through the years and in 1923, it merged with the Cookman Institute of Jacksonville,
Florida and became a co-ed high school. A year later in 1924, it became affiliated with
the Methodist Church. By 1931, the school had become a junior college.
Bethune was a key figure in the development of the Civil Rights movement. She
helped paved the way for Jackie Robinson to play his first spring training game in
