Don’t You Just
Love Changes?
I love Fall.
I love the
seasonal colors
of red, orange,
yellow and
brown; the
orange
pumpkins and
the golden
yellow corn
husks. I love
the change in
temperatures–
cooler with less
humidity and
the clearer
skies.
This time of year also brings on the “Holiday Bazaar”!! We have 25 vendors
to display their gifts and talents and now we need to do our part. What an
opportunity to invite co-workers, family and friends to share in the
celebration of the season, enjoy a bite to eat together, and think about the
special, unique gifts to purchase and to help bring in the season of “thinking of others”!!! Be sure to contact Carol to let her know you are bringing
guest(s) and remember the charge is $18 per guest to eat. The food set
up will be easier to get to as we will have the outside adjoining room.
The committee is sampling food so I know we are in for dining pleasure.
As we near the year end, which is hard to believe, we can all ask ourselves
– “where did this year go?”
One of the goals this year for WPF was to assess our website and make
the necessary changes which will enable our membership to utilize the
site more effectively and with more ease. We would like to thank

Matilda Kirby-Smith for her many years of website management, up loading
new content, pictures and documents. Managing the website has been a
huge responsibility for many years and she has literally saved us thousands
of dollars. Matilda, we appreciate your many years of volunteering your time
and expertise in helping WPF and we wish you the best as you do a little
more traveling. We need to make our website easier for everyone to use and
upon Matilda’s decision to retire from our website management, your board
decided to hire TechTriad who works exclusively with non-profits. The firm
will be able to take our website to the next level. We will keep you posted on
our web status.
And speaking of changes…our WPF Foundation will be bringing an updated report at the December business meeting. The membership provided a
wealth of great information and now they are incorporating it into charting
the Foundation’s future as well as re-shaping the grant making process.
Think of the future of women and girls that our organization will impact!!
I hope you enjoyed your small group dinners. Whether you dined in a
home or local restaurant, it was special to slow the pace,
engage in good conversation and discuss a question
or two that improves the function of our organization. Hats off to Beverly Williams and Kim
Record for bringing creativity to where we
would meet. We believe we had around 65%
of the membership involved in the small
group dinners and that is remarkable. I
know for some – it was difficult to attend
one of the dinners due to illness, travel
plans, weddings, or other conflicts. Life
happens doesn’t it ?!?! Just know we missed
you and hope to see you at the small group
dinners next year.
All the changes above are positive contrary
to the thinking that some change is bad or
negative. You go – you changemakers!!!!!!! WPF

Dining Out
Carol Rauch
The Dining Out Group was hosted by
Amy Gilbert on September 24 at

very friendly and accommodating.
Our Dining Out excursions will resume
on January 28, 2015. A sign–up sheet
will be passed around to enlist hostesses
for the year. We’re having a lot of fun, so
please come and join us! WPF

BOOKS AND ARTS 2015
New York City Trip!
Kris Landrum
Shopping, Sightseeing,
Theater, and more fun with
friends!
Date: Our trip is always during
the Martin Luther King holiday
weekend, which this year is
January 16th thru 19th.
Travel: The trip is informally
organized, but most of
us typically get a flight to
NYC on Friday morning
and return on a flight
late Monday afternoon.
Everyone makes her own
plane reservations, but
as individuals look for
(and, hopefully, find)
deals, we share the info
with others who have
indicated that they plan
do go.
Accommodations: We
usually stay at the Park
Central Hotel on Seventh
Avenue, near Carnegie
Hall and within walking
distance of the theater
district and Central Park,
but you are free to make
your own accommodation
arrangements. Because we
have stayed at the Park
Central in past years, we
receive notification of early
reservation discounts. The
current discount is 40% off
normal room rates and
expired on October 12th. In
order to take advantage of this
rate, we have reserved 12 rooms,
with either two double beds, two
queen beds, or one king bed.
Most of our travelers choose to
share a room with a friend, which
helps keep the cost more reasonable. The room rates for the double and queen rooms are detailed
below:
• Classic 2 Double (@285 sq. ft),
normally $287.14, $172.28 per
night
• Deluxe 2 Queen (@300 sq. ft)
7 WPForum NEWS / November 2014
Book & Arts
January 16 - 19, 2015
New York City
normally $327.14, $196.28 per
night
• (However, numerous fees, taxes,
etc., brings the cost of the Classic
Double to $685.20 for three
nights and the Deluxe Queen will
be proportionately more.)
We currently have nine of the 12
rooms spoken for. If you are
interested in this trip, the remaining rooms are available on a first
come, first serve basis. No payment is required in advance, but if
you ask us to hold a room, we
hope that you will make every
effort to use it, or to let us know
asap if your plans change. Please
email either Kris Landrum,
[email protected]
or Michele Smith at
[email protected] to make
your reservation and let us know
if you need a roommate or have
someone you plan to room with.
Activities: Weekend activities are
numerous and varied and up to
the individual. Some people like
to shop, some to visit museums,
sightsee, etc., but most of us will
also attend one, two or three
plays. If a number of us have
interest in the same plays, we
typically order tickets as a group
so that we can sit together. Plays
which we are considering this year
are: Beautiful, The Carol King
Musical; the new musical, The
Last Ship (which is Sting’s first
Broadway musical – he wrote the
original score); If/Then which has
received good reviews and stars
Idina Menzel (was in Frozen, an
original star in Rent) and James
Snyder (numerous TV shows and
movies); Hugh Jackman in The
River. The director is 2-time Tony
Award winner Joe Mantello who
also directed Wicked. And of
course, there’s Hedwig and the
Angry Itch and a Gentleman’s
Guide to Love and Murder. Off
Broadway, there’s Money Grubbin’
Whores, which looks good. If you
plan to go on the trip and have a
preference on the plays, let us
(Michele or Kris) know. Plus, if you
know of another play you think we
should consider, please send that
8 WPForum NEWS / November 2014
info to us as well.
Food: Meals are generally on
your own, with small groups going
to different places depending
upon their activities for the day.
However, we usually have brunch
together on Sunday morning, and
dine at a nice restaurant together
on Sunday night.
Join us for this trip! It’s as much
fun as Wild Women in the
Mountains, but a totally different
experience! If you
want to go on the
trip and notify
Michele or Kris,
you will get
planning emails
and info during
the next few
weeks, and have
the opportunity
to be part of the
decision making
process as plays
are selected and
plane tickets
purchased. WPF
